I also say WOW! Got a sound clip so we can hear what it sounds like in a BG
setting?

What do you do with it--mandolin type chops on the 3 chord changes or
something else?

I have to wonder, though, what the bluegrassers' reaction would be to the
sight of a giant harmonica. If they are queasy about a harp you hold in the
palm of your hand, they must get really bug eyed a giant harp!

Are you playing lots of gigs for the holliday season?
I'm looking forward to attending a Larry Delawder concert in Summersville, MO on
Jan 19, 2010
http://www.larrydelawder.com/

I'm playing at a church Christmas program next Sunday.
Most likely O Little Town Of Bethlehem in G first position.

I sometimes play Bluegrass at Weaver's Pickin Parlor, Willow Springs, MO

That is funny you should say that Dick I was thinking the same thing.

It has been a while since I heard anything off of this board.

Guess it is quiet for the holidays.

never experienced the "harmonica doesn't belong here" attitude from anyone. I've
been urged several times to get on a mike for the night, but I'd rather just
play in the background unless specifically asked to lead a song. I think I've
learned more from just sitting in and trying to figure out chording to support
everybody else AND avoiding walking on either the vocalists or the other lead
instruments than from anything else I've studied. It's a very supportive

Yes, it's the same Seagrove, the "pottery capitol of the ???". And quite a few
fine musicians (not including me.)

I live in Grantville, NC (actually addressed as Asheboro, NC; Grantville is

jams in the general area (if that includes most of Randolph County). I regularly
attend one held east of Seagrove on Highway 705, about 1 mile past Union Grove
Baptist Church. It's held on Thursday evenings, starting about 5:00 PM and
ending about 8:30 PM. Tons of fun, good food and lots of great musicians! I've
never experienced the "harmonica doesn't belong here" attitude from anyone. I've
been urged several times to get on a mike for the night, but I'd rather just
play in the background unless specifically asked to lead a song. I think I've
learned more from just sitting in and trying to figure out chording to support
everybody else AND avoiding walking on either the vocalists or the other lead
instruments than from anything else I've studied. It's a very supportive
atmosphere!

Bill,

I attend bluegrass jams almost every week (regularly scheduled local
jams as well as jams at festivals), and the jams at IBMA were like
many of the others I attend. Even though Nashville is far from LA,
many musicians already knew me and welcomed me. (The bluegrass CD I
put out with well-known musicians--banjoist Pat Cloud and the Uglum
family--has also given me more recognition.) Some who didn’t know me
were very surprised by my style (many notes but rarely bluesy) and
wanted to know how the chromatic works and why I never changed
harmonicas when the keys changed. Especially received questions
about the strange plunger on the side of my harmonica.

Although there were many hundreds of musicians at IBMA, I only
encountered one other harmonica player—a good diatonic player who
mostly played dobro. So harmonica isn't an established bluegrass
instrument, and one has to be good and really know the genre to be
accepted. For me, the highlight of IBMA, however, wasn’t the jamming
or even the shows on the main stage, but listening to the amazing
young fiddlers competing in the Grand Masters Fiddle Competition.
Most of my ideas come from fiddle players and there were plenty of
interesting ideas for me to "steal."

David,

How'd it go in Nashville -- fishy eyed looks at the chromatic or total
acceptance of the harmonica as a bluegrass instrument -- or somewhere in
between? Just curious as to how the jams went.

I have just added the Suzuki Manji that so many people are looking for to our
web site. We only have a limited
number of keys and a limited amount of stock, so they are first come
first served. Also on the Manji page are two Brenden Power videos
showing all of the features of the Manji.

http://coast2coastmusic.com/cgi-bin/cart/SUM20.html

Within the next day or so I will also be adding the Hohner Crossover in very
limited keys and amounts of stock, so keep checking the web site for
those.

As these items become more available we will add other keys, hopefully over the
the next few weeks.

Other new items added today include a cool little Danelectro mini amp with
echo and tremolo built in, an instructional book by Jia-YI He on
playing classical music, and a couple of new books by Davin Barrett on
improvising and back-up playing:

http://coast2coastmusic.com/cgi-bin/cart/DADH1.html

http://coast2coastmusic.com/cgi-bin/cart/MB20706.html

http://coast2coastmusic.com/cgi-bin/cart/MB21385BCD.html

http://coast2coastmusic.com/cgi-bin/cart/MB20943BCD.html

If you've never heard Jai-Yi He you should check him out on YouTube. He's
an amazing chromatic and tremolo player. Here's one where he holds
four tremolo harmonicas in his hands at once to play a song.(I've seen
him juggle eleven tremolos for one song before):

Did you know it's only a little over two months until Christmas?!
