Nice to hear from you, Dennis. Your music is good as always. I hope you
get a chance to visit Austin, Tx., again sometime.

Winslow,

What a treat--such accomplished, emotional playing. I love the way you combine
thick chords with single-note melodies. Great rhythm too!

As to the XB40, personally I think your tune done on the SBS is every bit as
engaging.

Thanks again for the music. BT

Bill -

Thanks. As to the SBS/XB comparison, it's true that there's not much
difference in expressivity for those two recordings - though I find I
can push the XB a little farther for intensity and vibrato on any
given note. I think the main point is that on thte SBS I have a
unqiue access to low notes while on the XB I can bend a few notes -
like Blow 6 - that make it easier to play in certain keys without
overblows, half-valving, altered tuning, etc. Nothing against any of
those methods, but they are not - for me - the preferred routes in
most situations.

Winslow

Dennis, did you notice the jazz swing band from Lenoir,NC. That's
were I live. I didn't know they were into recording. Personally,I'd
like to hook up with some of the players and see if could join in on
a jam. It's been years since I've played any cool jazz, except for
the Jazz CD's I have. Thanks for listening these chart positions.

Hey if you haven't been to Mark"s site lately, go there,
http://www.harpinanawhinin.com/ and look under the new flag that he
has. He has enough songs to keep us all busy for years. I discovered
it while sneaking around his site in the dark of night which I have a
tendency to do. Hey I even found Hank Snow's "I Don't Hurt Any More",
now guys, if he has that, he's got everything!!
My son brought me a CD of "Old Crow Medicine Show". Don't know if
you would call them "bluegrass" or not, but I got quite a kick out of
them. One guy plays the harp at times, (I think he is their fiddle
player too) and they are a pretty spirited group of young people. I
enjoyed them.
Also, I made Cara a case for her favorite harp. You have to make
them out of rawhide, otherwise those Hohners will saw their way right
through a normal one!!. Won't saw through this one though; tougher
than boiled bullfeathers! Be happy and play them things! Steve

The thing about rawhide is that it shrinks and then becomes like iron.
So you just about have to have the harp that you are going to put in
it for the pattern. Why not e-mail me your address, and I'll set down
and try to write up a how-to for you and send it to you "snail mail"
then you can tell us all how you made out? Maybe then, someone else
would like to give it a go. Steve

In response to numerous requests including at least 5 at Buckeye this last
weekend, here is a recounting of my weirdest gig...

I was working for Mel McDaniel and we were booked in East Nowhere Ok. We arrive
for the gig (having been told that there would not be anyone available for sound
check to run the board) and discover that it's a large tin building out in back
of the owners double wide. He comes out in his bib overhauls and tells us to go
on in he'll be there shortly. We open the side door and walk into what can only
be described as a horror film movie set. There are age old cob webs attached to
everything along with half empty beer glasses and dirty ashtrays. The owner
shows up and we ask how many people he's expecting tonight to which he
replies..."Dunno, called a few folks" Just as an aside Mel currently had the #1
single on the country charts "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" OK, so we set up and
it's Showtime...now there's three people in the joint...the owner, his wife, and
her cousin...COMBINED WEIGHT OF ALL THREE...I'd say 950 lbs. We kick off the
show and tear into something blazing to open the gig. We finish the number and
we can hear the echo of the last notes reverberating off the surrounding country
side as the owner has left the doors open. As that dies down the soothing sounds
of crickets and bullfrogs take over!!! We kick off the next number... a
ballad...very slow and emotional...half way through the song a GOAT wanders in
the side door next to the stage and proceeds to stand and stare, as only goats
can, directly in front of the stage at the band. As if on cue..as the song ends
the GOAT deposits it's most recent meal right in front of the stage and goes
back outside.
The rest of the night was uneventful as well as un-attended WHAT, QUIT AND GET
OUT OF SHOW BIZ?

Thanks, PT for the hope for a real WEIRD gig in the future.

There are age old cob webs attached to everything along with half empty beer
glasses and dirty ashtrays. The owner shows up and we ask how many people
he's expecting tonight to which he replies..."Dunno, called a few folks"
Just as an aside Mel currently had the #1 single on the country charts
"Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" OK, so we set up and it's Showtime...now
there's three people in the joint...the owner, his wife, and her
cousin...COMBINED WEIGHT OF ALL THREE...I'd say 950 lbs. We kick off the
show and tear into som! ething blazing to open the gig. We finish the number
and we can hear the echo of the last notes reverberating off the surrounding
country side as the owner has left the doors open. As that dies down the
soothing sounds of crickets and bullfrogs take over!!! We kick off the next
number... a ballad...very slow and emotional...half way through the song a
GOAT wanders in the side door next to the stage and proceeds to stand and
stare, as only goats can, directly in front of the stage at the band. As if
on cue..as the song ends the GOAT deposits it's most recent meal right in
front of the stage and goes back outside.
The rest of the night was uneventful as well as un-attended WHAT, QUIT AND
GET OUT OF SHOW BIZ?

I sure wish that I could have been there. Only so much one can take on.
Especially when selling and servicing 5 days a week to pay the bills. :)
Did you ever get your dental scalers? (instruments) I so need to talk to
you about the ultra suade, as I can't seem to get what I purchased to work.
I'd be happy to pay you for some.
BTW, I'll not be able to make the Denver SPAH either as I have to be in
Delaware that week, for a family reunion.

I've had a couple of requests to tab ol' Hanks Snows tune, and as
you guys no doubt know already, I don't know anything about music.
But for Stanley and Boston and all here goes.
  7 6d 7 8d7d 7
It don't hurt any more
  7 6d 5d 6 6d 6
All my teardrops are dried
  6d 6 7 6 5 5d
No more walkin' the floor
  4 4d 5 4 4d 5
With that hurtin' inside
  7 7d 7 8d 7d 7
Just to think it could be
  7 6d 5d 6 6d 6
Time has opened the door
  6d 6 7 6 5 5d
And at last I am free
4 4d 5 4 4d 4
I don't hurt any more.

CHORUS
  4 5d 6 6d 4 5d 6 6d 6d
No use to deny I wanted to die
  4 6 5d 6 5 6d 6
The day you said we were through
  4 5d 6 6d 6d 4 5d 6 6d 6d
But now that I find you're out of my mind
6 6 6 7d 7 8d 7
I can't believe that it's true
  7 6d 7 8d 7d 8
I've forgotten somehow
  8 7d 6d 7 7d 7
That I cared so before
  6 6d 7 6d 6 4d
And It's wonderful now
4 4d 5 44d 4
I don't hurt any more.

So there you go guys that's the way I here it in my head. I know
Mark and Cara and Dave will probably jump and spin when they play it
but hey. They know music and we don't! Ignorence is bliss. Play
those things and be happy!! Steve

way to see the various Pullman items is to go to our new items page
located at:

http://coast2coastmusic.com/cgi-bin/cart/

and click on "New Items" near the top of the left side navigation bar.

Doug Puls has set up a new package deal for all of his harmonica
instruction CDs including the latest playalong "Play With Doug's Band".
The package deal includes all six CDs at a special price. You can see
the package information here:

A number of instructional materials we have been carrying on VHS video

that they are often less expensive than the same thing on tape. For
example we have the David Barrett four video instruction set now
available on two DVDs. The DVDs sell for $19.95 and each has two of
the videos on it. The Video tapes formally sold for $24.95 each, so
the DVD is a real bargain! You can see DVD #1 here:

and DVD #2 here:

I have been asked to join a group that plays bluegrass and old time
tunes. I was instructed to get a harmonica "tuned" to bluegrass. What
tuning is that? Since I am mostly a chromatic player would the same
requirement be for the chromatic or is this strictly a diatonic thing?

Also in Bluegrass does the harmonica play just background or can I
take the lead sometimes? Thanks in advance.

The best thing would be to ask the person who told you that what they
meant. Perhaps they were just referring to the keys they consider to be
the most inmportant keys for bluegrass - keys like D, A, G, as opposed
to jazz or horn keys like Bb and Eb. But the best thing would be to ask
what their concern was in making that remark.

Chromatic can play bluegrass, of course. A C chromatic won't have a lot
of double stops or chords available for keys like D or A, will have a
few more for G. Some country/old time players like Jimmie Riddle played
chromatics tuned either in the key of the tune or a half-step above.
This allowed for more chording and some semitone dip-down ornaments.

Others can better answer on the lead vs. background thing, but
harmonica has a pretty obvious melody component and an equally obvious
chording/rhythm component, especially when the instrument is in a key
close to the key of the tune. Like anyone in a bluegrass ensemble or
session, you'd stay in the background most of the time, either doubling
the melody without dominating, or chording along (the so-called
mandolin chop on the second and fourth beats is a useful device). Then,
whenever it's considered musically and socially appropriate, step out
for a solo moment, either playing/embellishing the melody or
improvising, again according to the conventions of the gathering, which
may vary.

I am sure a lot of us would like to try something like that sometime.
Actually, I don't know a great deal about working with rawhide -- or at
least I don't know how much I know about working with it. If it were me
creating something like that, I would probably have gravitated to saddle
leather. I am a little more familiar with it, and if it's good enough for
knife sheaths...?

Of course, I really like what you built, so I am not complaining. I think
it is the coolest thing to come my way in a long time. If you would like, I
will see if I can get some decent pictures of it to share with the group.
Let me know.

As for as playing lead. It is up to your group and what they have in mind. The
harmonica is good for playing lead, background and rhythem on. The people I JAM
with take turns playing lead. We pass it back and forth on a song. I like to
play lead then pass it to one of the other Instruments and play rhythem and play
arpeggios for the background.
