Out of the Shadows

The Phantom Blues Band originally formed as a studio band to record behind Taj Mahal. Soon they were circling the globe together performing at major Blues and Jazz festivals in Europe, Australia and Japan. Their association led to two Grammys for "Best Contemporary Blues Album of the Year" in addition to 2001 W.C. Handy Award recipients as "Band of the Year." All accomplished musicians in their own right, members of the band have recorded and performed with such legendary artists as Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana, and Stevie Ray Vaughan to name just a few.

ROCK BOTTOM & BEN WATERS

Going Nowhere Fast

Recorded in Germany just months before Rock Bottom passed, this colaboration with Ben Waters (from the UK) provides and exciting mix of down and dirty Blues Harp with Boogie Woogie piano.

In the liner notes Rock says "This music is where the soul of a man never dies.", six months later he had passed on, but he was right.

This disc has long been unavailable in the US but has just been imported again.

NEWS FLASH

WATERMELON SLIM'S LEFT ARM BROKEN

(From Chris Hardwick - Southern Artist Mgt) I am sorry to inform everyone that due to a broken arm as a result of a being hit by a car, all performance dates for Watermelon Slim booked for the time period of November 1st to Dec 15th 2006 will be canceled.

At the time of the accident on Oct 20th, Slim was checked out by EMT at the scene and there was no evidence of anything other than bruising to his wrist and arm. In fact, Slim went on stage 30 minutes after the accident and then went on to complete 5 more shows up to Oct 28th. Slim thought he just had a bad bruise and was able to handle the pain and still perform. However, on Wed Nov 1st, we discovered Slim had more than just a sore wrist. His doctor discovered several broken bones in his left arm. The doctor set his arm in a cast and says in 6 wks, he will back good as new.

Slim feels very badly about not being able to perform for the fans and wants to thank all the venues and fans in advance for their understanding.

GOOD NEWS FOR WATERMELON SLIM and others

On November 2nd, the day after the doctor diagnosed the broken bones, it was announced that Watermelon Slim & The Workers were nominated for Blues Album of the Year at the 6th Annual Independent Music Awards for their album Watermelon Slim & The Workers. Also nominated are Dan Treanor & African Wind (Mercy) Duke Robillard (Guitar Groove-A-Rama) Eddie Turner (The Turner Diaries) and Glamourpuss (Bluesman's Prayer).

In the category of Blues Song of the Year, nominees are Alvin Jett & the Phat noiZ Blues Band (Angels Sing The Blues) Arnold Lindsay (Bad Night) B.T. Richardson (Sing No Blues) Little Miss Higgins (Ferry Boat Blues) and Steve Romig (Way Down Homeless Blues).

Also on November 2nd, Slim learned he was nominated for a "BB King International Artist Award", which will be awarded at the 2006 Maple Blues Awards sponsored by the Toronto Blues Society. Solomon Burke, James Hunter, Bettye Lavette, and Keb Mo also are nominated for the 2006 award.

Other notable nominations include Sue Foley (pictured at right), who is the only female nominated for Guitarist of the year.  Sue will be competing with Kevin Breit, Mel Brown, John Campbelljohn, and Bill Johnson.

Ruf Records'  newcomer Roxanne Potvin (pictured at left), is nominated for Female Vocalist. Competing in the same category are Rita Chiarelli, Ndidi Onukwulu, Suzie Vinnick and Dawn Tyler Watson.

Nominated for Recording of the Year are Mel Brown (Blues - A Beautiful Thing) Jim Byrnes (House of Refuge) JW-Jones Blues Band (Kissing in 29 Days) Diana Braithwaite & Chris Whiteley (Morning Sun) and Ndidi Onukwulu (No, I Never).

The winners will be announced at the annual 9th Annual Maple Blues Awards Gala in Toronto, on January 15, 2007. This very special evening is Canada's national annual celebration of homegrown blues talent. It's also a night of great music by the Maple Blues Band, comprised entirely of Maple Blues Awards winners and nominees. Special guests joining the band this year will be announced soon.

BLUES FOUNDATION MEMBER'S SHIP HAS COME IN

If Sue Foley  or JW Jones win, neither will be in Toronto to accept their award because they will be in the Caribbean aboard the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.

Joining Sue and JW on the cruise will be Blues Foundation Member Paul Smedberg of Fayetteville, NC who is the lucky winner in the "members only" drawing for the last cabin on the January 2007 Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise www.bluescruise.com. Paul has every intention of going on the cruise and indeed just returned from the Pacific cruise last month. His mojo was working. Bon Voyage!

MAJOR MOTION PICTURE RELEASE FOR SCORSESE'S DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE ROLLING STONES

Paramount Pictures will distribute Martin Scorsese's documentary about The Rolling Stones.

The distributor will get the still-untitled effort into theaters late next year, according to Billboard. Scorsese began filming for the project Sunday (Oct. 30) at President Clinton's birthday bash, where the band played a set following an address by Clinton.

Ahmet Ertegun Recovering From Fall

(Associated Press, November 7th) Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records, is recovering after hitting his head in a fall at a recent Rolling Stones concert.

Ertegun, an integral figure in the careers of artists including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, was attending a Stones concert at the Beacon Theatre on Oct. 29 when he slipped and fell, according to a statement released by Atlantic Records.

He injured his head and was taken to a hospital, according to the statement, but he is improving. Atlantic Records denied reports that Ertegun had been in a coma.

Ertegun, 83, is considered one of the most important figures in modern pop music, helping to shape the sound of rock, pop and soul with his artists and his production work. Amhet Ertegun was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Delta Blues Brings it On Home

MORGAN FREEMAN DISHES UP RECIPES IN A NEW BOOK

Morgan Freeman has had his name printed on movie marquees and even etched on an Oscar. Now, his name also appears on a cookbook.

"I can cook, but I don't cook," says the actor. "I like to eat, but I don't live to eat. If I could avoid cooking, I would."

However, he often cooks, bakes and grills out of necessity aboard his boat. "I have single pan dishes such as okra or chicken wings with tomatoes and rice (that I make)."

It's apparent Freeman likes good food.

"My business partner and I had to go too far to eat, if we didn't want fried foods like catfish and fried chicken," he says, so they opened a fine dining restaurant and Ground Zero Blues Club (pictured at left) in Clarksdale, Miss. It's a town with history that Freeman thought should be on the tourist circuit, but it needed a restaurant.

These days, in between getting ready for his next movie role, in "The Bucket List," Freeman is touting Caribbean cuisine in "Morgan Freeman & Friends: Caribbean Cooking for a Cause". It's filled with more than 75 recipes, color photos, celebrity memories of the islands and travel tales.

The theme of the book revolves around celebrities visiting and spending time on the island.

With contributions and stories from 15 celebrities - Tom Hanks, Katie Couric, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins, Kenny Chesney, Alfre Woodard and Michael Douglas among them - along with several hotel and restaurant chefs throughout the Caribbean, the book captures the spirit and flavors of the islands and takes you on a trip through paradise. "We've organized the book as I would plan a sailing trip - making time for friends, for exquisite food, and for the beauty and uniqueness of the many islands we visit," says Freeman.

Musician Wins Congressional Bid

A musician who wrote the 1970s pop tunes 'Still the One' and 'Dance with Me' toppled a longtime Republication lawmaker after a campaign that merged his minor-league celebrity with anti-Iraq war momentum and YouTube. "Don't Get Fooled Again" by The Who provided background music for his campaign ads.

John Hall, who founded the band Orleans and produced albums for Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt, ousted Rep. Sue Kelly who swept into office as part of the 1994 GOP revolution.

His stated goals are to restore checks and balances to government, to make healthcare affordable and available for all, and to promote energy independence based on clean alternatives. As a songwriter and publisher, he is keenly aware of the intellectual property issues facing content owners. He will represent the 19th Congressional District of New York.

CURTIS SALGAGO UPDATE

Curtis had a scare, his abdomen swelled up tremendously and he had to go under the knife again on the originally transplanted liver. Curtis was bleeding inside. Things are under control now. He has his sister, and his lady friend, caring for him. They are still in a Omaha, NE hospital. Curtis should be back at his home by the end of the month.

Even with numerous benefits and donations assisting with medical costs it was necessary to take out a 100K loan. Additional benefits for Curtis are under consideration either in December, January, February, or March.

Meanwhile, Curtis is flirting with the medical staff, ready to get to the stage again, and continually overwhelmed with the support he has received. He is taking good care of himself, and wants everyone to know their prayers and support are greatly appreciated.

STROKE PUTS BLUESMAN IN THE HOSPITAL

Grammy Award-nominated bluesman Robert Lockwood Jr. had a stroke Friday and is recovering at University Hospitals Case Medical Center.

The singer-guitarist, 91, was in stable condition Tuesday, said his wife, Mary.

Lockwood, a native of Turkey Scratch, Ark., took guitar lessons from legendary blues pioneer Robert Johnson. Lockwood has lived in Cleveland since 1960. A fixture on the local music scene, he has had a regular Wednesday night engagement at Fat Fish Blue. He performed there last week.

“He was playing good as ever,” said bassist Gene Schwartz, who has backed Lockwood since 1972.

As a solo artist, Lockwood has had a sporadic recording career. He earned Grammy nominations for a pair of albums: 1998’s “I Got to Find Me a Woman” and 2000’s “Delta Crossroads.”

He recently returned to the studio to appear on “The Way Things Go,” the latest album by singer-guitarist Cleveland Fats, aka Mark Hahn.

Lockwood has won four W.C. Handy Awards from the Memphis-based Blues Foundation, which inducted him into the Blues Hall of Fame. When he celebrated his 90th birthday in March 2005, the festivities included a sold-out tribute at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

ACTION AT THE AUCTION

Memorabilia from some of the most influential musicians and songwriters of the 20th century will be headlining at Christie’s Rock and Pop Memorabilia auction on December 4 in New York. Highlights of the sale include Paul McCartney lyrics, Jimi Hendrix’s guitar, and recorded interview with John Lennon.

In 1994 Paul McCartney commented on the song, “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer is my analogy for when something goes wrong out of the blue, as it so often does, as I was beginning to find out at that time in my life. I wanted something symbolic of that, so to me it was some fictitious character called Maxwell with a silver hammer.” The lyrics were written in 1968 and soon after McCartney gave them to Barry Miles, his biographer, and a former Apple Records employee. An early working version of the composition, the last four lines of the lyrics are omitted and include deletions and alterations to the text as McCartney worked out the song’s wording (estimate: $200,000-300,000).

From one of the most genius guitar players of rock ’n’ roll legend comes a Fender Stratocaster with a sunburst finish owned by Jimi Hendrix from 1969-1970 (estimate: $80,000-120,000). The guitar has resided at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland ever since the museum opened in 1996. The guitar was modified for Hendrix’s left-handed use and seems to have been purchased for his use in the fabled Electric Lady Studios in New York. Hendrix’s mug shot will also be on the auction block— taken in May 1969 in Toronto when he was arrested for drug possession (estimate: $2,000-3,000).

A strong selection of John Lennon memorabilia is available, starting with a previously unheard and undocumented recording of an interview with Lennon that was the basis for an article in Crawdaddy magazine, March 1974 (estimate: $25,000-35,000). In this 60 minute taped interview with freelance journalists, Lennon discusses everything from his songwriting process, future plans and questions of a potential Beatles reunion, to being challenged by Nixon’s administration.

More information about Christie's sale of Rock and Pop Memorabilia can be found on www.christies.com.

MORE AUCTION ACTION

The Who drummer Keith Moon's drum kit and diaries are to be put up for auction.

The late hellraiser's handwritten diaries -
one which was written in 1974, four years before he died of an accidental drug overdose aged 32 - include entries about filming 'Stardust' and 'Tommy'.

Two Premier drums are expected to fetch up to £12,000 and four Premier drumsticks could go for between £300 and £500.

A source told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "This sale is a goldmine of collectables for fans of a man considered by many to be rock's greatest ever drummer. Who wouldn't want to own a piece of rock history?"

The sale, which coincides with The Who releasing their first album for 24 years, will be held at London's Christie's auction house on November 21.

A movie about the drummer's life is set to be filmed next year.

2007 IBC Tickets and Hotel Now Available

You are now able to purchase tickets to 2007 International Blues Challenge online. You can also get our host hotel information. If you choose to use one of the hotels with which we have agreements, this year you will be making your reservations directly with the hotel. Be sure to order your IBC tee-shirts there too.

As of this time, we are aware of some changes for 2007. The Keeping the Blues Alive Awards banquet will begin an hour earlier than in recent years--at 10:00 am. A bit early for blues fans perhaps, but in 2006, the event ran into the beginning of solo/duo finals. Speaking of finals, the big change is that the band finals will run from 2:00-7:00pm at the Orpheum Theater and the Solo/Duo finals will be presented at 8:30pm at the New Daisy Theater. And when those are over, there should be plenty of IBC bands to choose from in other Beale Street clubs on Saturday night.

Please visit the IBC page for information tickets and lodging information.
