I would suggest the following:

Herbie Hancock: 'Thrust' and 'Headhunters'
Chick Corea: 'Crystal Silence'
Miles Davis: 'Bitches Brew'

These all have a modern, cerebral mood. Do you know those albums. I
can give more information about them if you like.

Also, I recently bought the album 'Kaboom' by Australian guitarist
James Muller. He's a very original, modern writer and an exceptional
musician; rated world class by many reviewers although you can still
see him at a local bar in Sydney (if you're lucky). Mostly original
compositions, but the standard 'All the Things You Are' is my
favourite; incredible playing. Definitely worth checking out.
