I didn't ask the question on his website because it wasn't indicated or stated.
That info is usually provided in most bios unless it was purposely omited. I
thought it should be common knowledge and would/should have been posted, thus
the reason for my post. It's strange, when I googled him, no where was it
indicated either? Go figure....I guess I could always ask on his website too?

Thanks for your understanding. I usually have to delete a numerous spam
messages from this group every week and only allow messages from actual people
to get through (e.g. not robots!).
I don't mind ppl promoting musical events of a relevant nature on this group,
but spam is a different matter. I strongly suggest no one sends anything to the
email address in the original message. It's sure to be some kind of scam.

Hi Petri,

Example: Naima works nicely if you play in Dm rather than the original
Ebm because you can get the 2 pedal notes on open strings (esp if you
tune the 6 string down to D)
OTOH I find Blue in Green sounds good in the original key (Dm/Gm) as
the open A and E can be worked into the chord melody harmonies.
>On the latest issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine, Earl Klugh talks
about this thing.
Hmm...,thanks, must check that out.

Hi Petri,
Thanks, that seems to be the definitive answer. The link I posted to
the Equinox chart previously is indeed in Dbm. Unusual, but then,
Coltrane was anything but usual.
I mentioned playing with singers because it caused me the same kind
of problem; I'd be comfortable playing something in a particular
position but it wouldn't suit the singer's range and I'd have to
rework it.
The better you know your instrument, the less the key should matter.

Hi,
I didn't get around to writing this before - Equinox is indeed in C#m
originally. Or Dbm if you will. To me, realizing just how free Coltrane
is when playing in an "unusual" key like that is a lesson unto itself.
Regarding keys, I think it's a great exercise to play any tune in
multiple keys. Bill Evans reportedly took tunes through all keys when
practicing; in many cases, I've found much better keys than the usual
ones when I do this. Some "standard" keys just don't fit so well on the
guitar, especially if you want to do a chord melody thing. On the
latest issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine, Earl Klugh talks about this
thing.
All the best,
Petri
www.petrikrzywacki.com
The points you make are quite valid; sorry I can't give you the
definitive answer on this, maybe someone else can. It seems very
strange to me that a sax player would use EMaj/C#m when Eb/Cm is so
much more comfortable and standard. This is only surmise on my
part...
*However; this site has a chart for Equinox and a midi file:
http://www.songtrellis.com/sounds/viewer$313
chart:
http://www.songtrellis.com/picture$770
Listed as a minor blues in Db concert.

This post originally addressed sitting in with other Muso's. Singers
are another issue. Commonly refering to the "standard" key is a simple
way of everyone being on the same page, if you will. Most good Muso's
learn to play in all keys, and some choose the keys that are easiest
to play in, based on the instrumentation.
My main reason for posting the difference from the sheet music and CD
recording, verses what is commonly accepted when playing in unfamilar
circumstances, was to find out what is more popular. Your Herbie
story is amusing.

Hi Passion, I don't really hold with a concept of 'the correct key'.
I used to work a lot with singers; one key would suit one singer's
voice better than another etc. so you learned to be flexible. I also
find it difficult to believe Coltrane played that tune in C#m/E.
Cm/Eb is much better suited to a Bb instrument. Perhaps there is a
problem with the speed on the recording.
Of course there are keys which are commonly used for standards but
they're not carved in stone. I heard a story about a guy who sat in
with Herbie Hancock; Herbie called a tune in Eb and the guy said,
hey, that's in F isn't it? Herbie just smiled and said ok...

CD recording of "The Best of John Coltrane," which is in C#m or EMaj,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Project Grand Slam Hits it Out of the Park With Play
Hollywood, CA November 4, 2008 Project Grand Slam promises to hit plenty of
homeruns with the November 4 release of their debut album Play." With five of
its thirteen
tracks and the band having already been prominently featured on the hit NBC
Series
"Lipstick Jungle," the eclectic contemporary jazz band is savoring the fruits of
early
success. But there's plenty more where that came from: loaded to the brim with
smooth
musicianship and joyful jamming. Acid Jazz Magazine states, "Project Grand Slam
is a
spectacular mix of jazz, fusion and rock that combines melody, groove and great
improvisation."
Headlining Project Grand Slam's first foray is the current radio track "The
Captain of Her
Heart," a cover of Double's 1986 chart-topper. Aided by noted vocalist Judie
Tzuke, the
song's cool vibes and velvety aura allow Play to hit its stride early. That
momentum
continues thanks to the steady hands of Project Grand Slam's players, who
composed most
of the album's tracks. With Robert Miller on bass, Haim Cotton on keyboards, Ron
Thaler
on drums, and Gilad Ronen on sax, true jazz fans will know they're in store for
a special
ride. Up-tempo grooves like "Studio One" and "Because She Said So" start things
off right,
while slower numbers like "Baal HaSulam" and "Shades of Memories" demonstrate
the
quartet's versatility. As producer Frank Filipetti says, "Gorgeous tunes, great
beats. This
record is a home run." Audiences everywhere will undoubtedly agree.
Project Grand Slam is the collaboration of four accomplished contemporary jazz
leaders
who count Return To Forever, Bela Fleck, and Bruce Hornsby among their
influences. They
have performed with many notable artists, including Sarah McLachlan, Rob Thomas,
Alicia
Keys, and Herbie Hancock.
Visit the Project Grand Slam website at http://www.projectgrandslam.com for more
information, tour updates, and song samples.
