Here's another review. MODERATOR: Keep the SPAM off this site!!!
Also in the CD player this week are some great compilations, "Chickasaw
Country Child: The Artistry of Bobbie Gentry,
"Bobbie Gentry burst on the scene with a remarkable bit of southern Gothic
folk, a tale of misery and woe told through the common observances around the
dinner table. The song was "Ode to Billie Joe," which sold a remarkable 750,000
copies, knocked "All You Need is Love" from the top slot on the Billboard
charts and spawned a movie. The sales and the notoriety were well-deserved —
the
song was a rare example of the songwriting craft, a marvel of closely observed
detail and dramatic tension that was more short story than pop song. While it
was her finest song, this disc has a lot to offer, moving from pop to folk to
blues and country.
And as good as it is, I keep returning to its opening track to hear the
news about Billie Joe."
