The picture I posted earlier said 1969 when I downloaded it a while back, but the same picture from Al Diorio's book says 1967. I would think Al D would be correct. Anyway, hopes this helps put the time in perspective.

Dodd looks to be about 6 in this picture so 1967 seems to me to be the correct date.

Thanks again for the picture!

Here are a few more pictures from that shoot. I don't know the exact time. I don't care all that much.
Do you believe he's playing the guitar?  I do.  Maybe even teaching Dodd on the ivories, whatever kind they are. You can probably tell the time frame by Dodd, or, maybe, Bobby's hair.  Bobby looks kind of happy.

What I can't figure is why anyone would be so dead set against Bobby having the musical talent and ability to play other instruments than we know about, or that he might have tried for his own personal fun and satisfaction.

The next time I run across a photo of him playing an instrument, I'll just post it with no comment. I will not disrespect him by knit picking how well he could play, or if his house was rented or not. People rent houses all the time, but still have their own things in them.

Let it shine (if possible), Karen

Enjoy the pictures. It isn't often that we see him at home with Dodd.

If you look at the placement of the fingers on the banjo, he's not just holding it; he's playing it.

I'm sure he played a lot of instruments just enough to get by, but on the drums, vibes, harms, piano, and guitar, he was pretty damn good.

This picture was taken at Bobby's home according to the article. It looks like an organ, not a piano, behind him.  One would imagine that he played it, since he could play both the piano and the harpsichord.
Love the picture of him--master of the manor.

I think it depends on at what level you're expecting when you say "play".  I know from Deren (my son) that if one has the musical gene, one can play just about anything ..... and especially with string instruments.  Personally, it's beyond my ken since I can do nothing musical but tap my feet, but I'd be willing to bet the ranch that BD could pick (pun intended) a tune on banjo or bass.  He might not be ready to be a studio musician on all instruments but given an hour and a tape, he could play a tune on either of these. .......... I'm not saying that you're not right, Gisele, but I did read about him being able to play the banjo, and that he did play performing somewhere. I would imagine most people who play guitar can play the banjo.  Bobby was a quick study, so I'll bet he could.  When I'm able to locate where I read it in all the stuff I have, I'll pass it on. As for the bass.  Wouldn't surprise me if he could play it. Was it Vee or Nina who said he could play an instrument within ten minutes of picking it up. Maybe he could play, but didn't professionally.

TO CONNIE FRANCIS: "I LOVE YOU & MISS YOU."

BOBBY DARIN
.
ANS: "Bobby", 1p, 8½x7¼.
Star Time Television Studios Inter-Office Communication, no date. To singer Connie Francis. In full: "Joe says he has no 78s & no copies left of your biog. He also says (jokingly) that he assumes you will remember where you were born etc. I love you & miss you." Bobby (Walden Robert Cassotto) and Connie (Concetta Franconero), who met in January 1956, were in love but never married. CONNIE FRANCIS recorded "My First Real Love", a song written by Bobby Darin and Don Kirshner. Darin and his group, The Jaybirds, sang the background vocals. From her autobiography, Who's Sorry Now: "Bobby Darin was different--dynamic, versatile, chock full of energy, with a fierce determination I had never seen before. I learned to adore him for all the reasons I always would-his respect for the little guy, his sense of fairness, his intellect, candor, and self-confidence, his brashness, toughness and sweet tenderness-all the contrasts that made him so fascinating." Bobby Darin won two Grammy Awards in 1960 for his rendition of "Mack the Knife", which sold two million copies. He was nominated for an Academy Award for the portrayal of a shell-shocked GI in Captain Newman, M.D. In 1973, following a heart operation to repair two malfunctioning heart valves implanted two years earlier, the versatile performer died at 37 of heart failure. His life is told in the 2004 film, Beyond the Sea. Connie Francis wrote that she always loved Bobby Darin "until the day he died and beyond". Pencil notes on verso and at top right corner (unknown hand). Creased. Vertical fold through blank area between letters in signature. Fine condition.

Ladies & gents....my 9yr old son and I went to a pizza pub....the owner`s music & decore is 60`s and 70`s memorabilia...big pictures of movie stars & singers of the day! Now that being said, I noticed Bobby was not one of them....and as we were eating our pizza....lord behold, "DREAM LOVER" came on the speakers : )   My son looks up at me with big eyes and said, "Mom....there you go" we both laughed lol!
Well.... it gave me a idea he heeee  I went up to the owner and said, " I have a odd request to ask of you " and she said, oh no--{with a smile}!  I continued....I noticed that you decorate your establishment so nice with 60`s memorabilia and was thinking (with a long pause) --- " I am a Bobby Darin Fan and was wondering, would you like to have another picture on your wall for decoration???!!!.... and she gave me a BIG smile and said, "I would love to have Bobby Darin on my wall" and we both smiled at eachother with joy....she continued to say that she had Elvis up and someone stoled it off the wall....so now she screws them down........so I was hoping all of you could send your fav picture of Bobby to this forum, that I can choose to blow-up to a 8x10 for her restaruant!!!!!!!!!!!!!  There are so many that I love....and need help deciding, sincere thanks    dian
