Something wicked (awesome) this way comes...
I'm writing to invite you to yet another wild and windy Halloween concert!

Get into your costume, or just into the spirit, as eerie (yet harmonious) voices fill the old (yet not abandoned) firehouse.  This third annual “Spookapella” showcase once again features a fearful variety of vocals-only music.  New York's Duwende returns by popular demand, and then Boston's own reunited Five O'Clock Shadow will glide in for one howlin’ good time.

Lots of treats and a few tricks too!  Ear-candy, anyone?

For those of you who know and have heard "Singers Unlimited", you'll
know who Len Dresslar is:

This is an E-mail forwarded to me that was sent by Don Shelton of
the Hi-Lo's.

Sad News...

Don Shelton at 10:56pm:
It is with a very heavy and saddened heart that I report
the passing of a dear friend and
colleague.......Len Dresslar.....bass of the Singers
Unlimited and certainly the voice of the
"Jolly Green Giant"....Ho, Ho, Ho for over 40 years.......
as well as countless other jingles
that I was privileged to a part of while in Chicago for 25
years. I mention this to all who
have known of his resounding Bass voice both on recordings
and Radio and Television.
He was President of Chicago AFTRA for several years in the
mid to late 80's. To lose 2
"Giants" like Thurl, as Tony the Tiger, and Len, as the
Jolly Green Giant, in the space of 4
months, not to mention the loss of Loulie Jean Norman as
well, just leaves me almost
speechless..........3 of my mentors for sure.....and good
friends. I shall miss them all so
very much. It gives me pause to reflect on my career
getting to sing with the likes of these
stellar performers, who always displayed a sense of the
Music with style and a grace beyond
belief. We will have a Memorial for Len in Palm Springs
this Friday at his home with Family
and close friends............May God continue to bless
these families as they live with their
losses..............May we never forget what they brought
to our Singers Community in both
Los Angeles and Chicago. I thought you would want to know.
As always,
Peace, Don

Boston's award-winning vocal group Vox One will celebrate the release
of their first album in seven years at Arlington's Regent Theater on
December 2.

"Pure Imagination", a collection of off-the-beaten track originals,
covers and spontaneous improvs, arrives on the heels of a several-year
hiatus in which group members pursued individual projects and honed
their techniques. Beginning as students and reuniting as faculty
members at Boston's Berklee College of Music, Jodi (Jenkins) Ainsworth
(soprano), Yumiko Matsuoka-Young (alto), Paul Stiller (tenor and vocal
percussion), Paul Pampinella (baritone) and Tom Baskett (bass) will
now release what may be their most inventive CD to date.

Among the collection of originals and covers are a lush remake of Pure
Imagination of Willy Wonka fame, the high-powered Indian
tabla-inspired original Kind of a 3, a soulful rendition of Joni
Mitchell's Woodstock, and Stevie Wonder's uplifting I Wish.
Complimenting the full tracks are Vox One's signature improvs peppered
throughout the recording – capturing some of the excitement of the
group's live performances.

The group has earned wide acclaim for their performances and CDs,
including "Best A Cappella Group, Jazz" by Boston Magazine. Vox One's
eponymous debut CD was named "Best Album" and awarded "Best Song" by
the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America (CASA). Their second US
release Out There, (1995) won "Album of the Year," "Best Jazz Song,"
and "Best R&B song" by CASA. The 1998 release, Chameleon, earned Vox
One CASA's "Artist of the Year," "Best Jazz Album" and "Best Jazz Song."

I thought some of you might find this press release interesting.
Sounds like a fun opportunity to sing some a cappella.

John Neal
http://www.SINGERS.com

Yo ho ho! Sea chanteys inspire singers

It is easy to sing a sea chantey: Just say: "to me way-hey-hey-YAH,"
said Lynn Noel, one of the founding members of a group of singers that
brings its special brand of maritime history to the MIT Museum each month.

The sea chantey developed to help coordinate the work on a ship, said
David Kessler, program assistant in the MIT Sloan School of
Management, who co-produced the program with Noel, an Arlington
resident. At its heart, the sea chantey is working music, with songs
for pumping water from a ship, heaving at a capstan to bring up an
anchor and hauling on lines to trim the sails.

Hauling chanteys come in two basic types: one for long, slow jobs,
called drag chanteys, and one for short, quick jobs called short drag
chanteys.

"Traditionally, chanteys were mostly sung a cappella, although
sometimes there would be a fiddle or banjo," Kessler said. Both the
concertina and melodeon ( button accordion ) might also have been used
as accompaniment.

Noel and Kessler, along with MIT alumni Jeff Keller ( S.B. 1988 ) and
Michael Bergman ( Ph.D. 1992 ), brought the chantey sings to MIT and
to Boston this summer. Both San Francisco and New York City have
monthly sings. New York's is held in the historic South Street Seaport.

With its history of sailing and rowing, Boston was ripe for a monthly
sing, Noel and Kessler said. "Boston really deserved to have its own
sea music community," said Noel.

The group first met at the MIT Sailing Pavilion in July and August.
Roughly 30 chantey singers from all over the state sat on the dock,
near the water. "There is a degree of authenticity you get when you
are right out on the water singing about the water," said Noel.

The sings moved to the museum for winter but will likely return to the
waterfront when the weather improves.

The MIT singers are open to any song of the sea, said Kessler. "We'll
sing any song that's about sailors, ships, fishermen, dockyard workers
or waterside neighborhoods. We cover all these under the umbrella
'maritime songs,'" he said.

Kessler has been sailing since he was a teenager, but said the songs
give him a new appreciation for it. "As I became more interested in
boats and larger ships, I became interested in their culture --
chanteys are fun and easy, and help me appreciate boats and sailing as
much as sailing itself," he said.

For others, singing the chanteys is an opportunity to bring history
alive. "It gives us an opportunity to bring the past into the
present," Noel said. Just last week, a group of 100 singers came
together to celebrate the bicentennial of the Battle of Trafalgar, the
famous 1805 sea battle in which Britain's fleet, commanded by Adm.
Horatio Nelson, defeated the French under Napoleon. "It is a form of
living history," said Noel.

Although the majority of chanteys at the Boston sing are in English,
the songs show up in almost every language in the world. Last month,
an MIT graduate student who attended a sing performed a Polish chantey.

In the time before motors, "sailing vessels were moved by hand and
heart," said Noel. These songs keep that memory alive, celebrating the
sea and all the hard work that went into exploring it.

"The songs are an experiential education," Noel said. "They have a
real context; the songs allow you to travel the world without leaving
your chair."

The NE_ChanteySingers appreciate the recent posting fron producerguy101. We
would LOVE
some of you a cappella singers to drop in to one of our monthly chantey sings!
No
experience is necessary, all songs are led/taught (we sing by ear rather than
from sheet
music), and we adore harmonies and encourage improvisation. If you're looking
for a chance
to hone your ear training skils in a fun and friendly environment, to practice
your harmony
improv, or to lead a rousing chorus no matter what part you sing <G>, this could
be the
perfect opportunity! As a world-music a cappella singer myself, I've joined your
group and we
hope you'll join ours. Please introduce yourself as a member of boston-acappella
when we
meet at a Chantey Sing.

Boston Jazz Voices

Boston Jazz Voices, is one of New England's premier jazz a cappella singing groups.  Founded twenty years ago, Boston Jazz Voices is a mixed a cappella chorus of eighteen singers, each highly experienced and specialized in close harmony, a cappella singing in jazz, swing and popular styles.  Unlike most a cappella  groups, which are small (4-5 singers), Boston Jazz Voices uses its  eighteen voices and six- to eight-part close harmonies to produce a  uniquely beautiful sound.  For more information, please visit us at www.bostonjazzvoices.com .

Similar Jones

Similar Jones is a high-energy mixed a cappella vocal band of 5 singers with a strong, dedicated, and ever-expanding New England following.  Their style is primarily rock and soul, influenced by elements of blues, funk, and jazz.  Their repertoire consists of cover songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and today, and includes a growing number of original tunes.  The Jones sound is marked by tight harmonies, intricate rhythms, innovative arrangements, and -- most importantly -- by a rock-solid groove.  For more information, visit them at www.similarjones.com.
