Drums For One And All - October FreeDrum gathering   Message List

Hi All --

Can you imagine 24 hours of drum circle facilitation training in one
weekend? Well, I survived the marathon and have returned to tell the
tale! The internationally renowned granddaddy of the American drum
circle movement - Arthur Hull - was just here in MA to lead an intensive
workshop (he calls them "playshops") for 18 hardy souls who wanted to
bolster their skills at rhythm-based group facilitation. If you know
nothing about Mr. Hull, try to picture all of the Three Stooges rolled
into one skin, and then give them amphetamines and a drum! But aside
from all his zaniness, Hull has a wealth of information to pass along,
not only with his vast rhythmic knowledge, but also with his well-honed
talents at getting small or gigantic groups of people to make great
music together using drums and percussion instruments. It was a
challenge to absorb in 3 days what he normally teaches in a week's time,
but it'll sure give me a lot to chew on for months to come.

Now, all that being said, this Thursday will be the October gathering of
FreeDrum, which is hosted by Drums For One And All at the UU Church in
Milford, MA. And with my head exploding with ideas about circle
facilitation, I've got to say that with all that inspiration and
training, I am going to use NONE of it!

Huh?

Well, as you might have guessed, it's not called "FreeDrum" fer
nuthin'. The whole idea is that you and a bunch of other fine folks
come on down to 23 Pine Street with your djembes and dununs, congas and
clave, bells and bongos, and you p - l - a - y and have heaps of f -
u - n without anyone getting in the way.

If I were to come bounding in like Zorro and leave my mark all over the
circle by exercising my newly acquired tricks and techniques, the "free"
in "FreeDrum" would be defiled. So instead, it will be business as
usual -- arrive at 7pm, plop down our 5 bucks (the one part of FreeDrum
that ain't free), have a blast creating magical rhythmical chemistry
together, socialize and connect as community, and then go happily on our
way out into the world again.

But next month? Well that may be a whole 'nother story once I've
figured out how to invisibly slip all those crafty ideas into the circle
so that the regularly scheduled magic becomes more magicaler for no
apparent reason. Or I may just start acting like Larry, Curly or Moe,
in which case, it's back to the drawing boards! (nuck nuck nuck)

Anyway, I hope to see you at FreeDrum, and stay tuned for more DFOA
events coming up this month.

Your faithful Pilgrim of the Pulse -- Dave C.
