British singer Boy George combined a strong, soulful singing voice
with a provocative sense of fashion, both of which were first brought
to the attention of English and American audiences in the group
Culture Club, for which be served as lead singer from 1982 to 1986.
The group wrote and played impeccable pop music, and Boy George's
androgynous persona -- heavy makeup, outrageous costumes -- gave the
group a distinct video image in the dawn of MTV.

That very distinctiveness, however, made the group date quickly, and
at the same time Boy George encountered highly publicized personal
difficulties. He re-emerged as a solo singer in 1987 with Sold, which
contained a UK #1 cover of Bread's "Everything I Own," but was unable
to duplicate this success in the U.S. Boy George enjoyed four British
singles chart entries in 1987 and another three in 1988. His second
album, Tense Nervous Headache (1988) was not picked up for release in
the U.S.; his third, Boyfriend (1989) was a Europe-only release,
though Virgin Records cobbled the second and third albums together to
present a second U.S. album, High Hat (1989).

In 1991 came The Martyr Mantras, another patchwork album largely made
up of previously non-LP dance singles. In the U.K., it was credited
to a new group, Jesus Loves You, and released on Boy George's own
More Protein record label, though Virgin in the U.S. billed it as a
Boy George album. By 1992, Boy George had faded at home, and in the
U.S. his solo career had never taken off. Then he was brought in to
sing a version of the '60s chestnut "The Crying Game," in a
production by the Pet Shop Boys, as the title song for a movie that
became the sleeper hit of the winter of 1992-1993, resulting in his
first substantial U.S. hit as a solo artist.

It's Raining Men on American Idol Temenos Entertainment
'It's Raining Men' found it's way onto American Idol last week for the second
time, in Fox show that has a long and winding gay sub-text.

Idol contestant Kim Locke did an admirable job performing the classic. When the
time came to critique her performance, however, the notoriously critical Simon
Cowell was more interested in commenting on host Ryan Seacrest. Cowell commented
that the gay camp classic was one of Ryan's favorite songs.

The Marsha Wash song was also performed by American Idol winner Kelli Clarkson
in the first season of the show.

Ryan Seacrest, not to be outdone, commented on a show later that week, that
Simon's favorite song was 'YMCA', a song he first heard at a bar called the
'Manhole'.

Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest are not the only American Idol regulars whose
sexual orientation has been a subject of discussion. American Idol fans
discovered the online journal of Jim Verraros, one of the top 10 finalists from
the first season, and put the pieces together. Verraros came out last December
in an Advocate Magazine interview.

While Jim Verraros is the only 'American Idol' to come out of the closet, he
joins Will Young, the openly gay winner of the Brittish version of the show 'Pop
Idol'. Young came out shortly after releasing his first single in the UK.

This season contestant Clay Aiken has been the subject of much speculation.
While Aiken's hometown newspaper ran a story about him with the headline 'Female
fans achin' for Aiken', male fans have also been posting on American Idol
message boards around the net wanting to find out more about this top ten
finalist.

If Clay or any of the current American Idol contestants are in fact gay, it is
unlikely we will find out any time soon. Both Jim Verraros and Will Young came
out months after their respective Idol shows ended.

Skinner show rapped for gay sex chat
        The Frank Skinner Show has been criticised by television
regulators after Boy George talked graphically about homosexual sex.
        More than 20 viewers contacted the Independent Television
Commission to complain about the show.
        In the programme, Boy George talked to Skinner about subjects
such as buggery and masturbation.
        Viewers claimed the nature of the interview had exceeded the
bounds of taste and decency, complaints which were upheld by the ITC.
        The broadcaster argued there was a warning screened before the
show was aired and that viewers would have been aware of the nature
of the Frank Skinner Show.
        But in its adjudication the ITC ruled that the interview had
breached its code.
        After watching the programme the ITC said the discussion had
been devoted almost wholly to the subject of sexuality and had
contained repeated graphic reference to various sexual practices.
        In their ruling they said: "Boy George seemed to be determined
to disconcert Skinner through a series of 'outrageous' suggestions."
        "The ITC did feel that the unrelenting sexual nature of the
whole Boy George interview, and one or two of the references in
particular had gone beyond the limits of the code," they added.
        But the ITC rejected complaints from 17 viewers about jokes
made by Skinner regarding the war in Afghanistan.  The watchdog ruled
the remarks were "justifiable satire" against a brutal and repressive
regime.

Boy George musical to open in London
        LONDON (Reuters) â€" A musical penned by flamboyant 80s singer
Boy

George opens on London's West End on Monday.
        In addition to being an entirely new show â€" Boy George
penned 21
new
songs for it â€" "Taboo" has had to overcome technical difficulties
associated
with its brand-new venue, a spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday.
        The Venue was the first theater to be licensed on London's
famed

Leicester Square in 74 years, she said.
        "Taboo," named after the London nightclub where Boy George
spent
much
of his youth, is loosely based on the singer's rollercoaster life
of sex,
drugs and rock'n'roll with chart-topping 80s band Culture Club.
        It tells the story of a young fortune seeker to 1980s London
and
the
colorful characters he meets â€" including the cultural icon of the
day, Boy
George.  But the singer and club DJ, famous for his over-the-top
makeup and
outrageous outfits, will not be on stage himself.  His character
will be
played by a lookalike.
        Boy George, who now openly admits he is gay but kept his
relationship

with Culture Club drummer Jon Moss secret at the start of the group's
meteoric
rise to fame, said in an interview last year the show was about not
fitting
in.
        "The message really is that no matter what someone looks like,
they

are still a person," he said at the time.
        The first preview of "Taboo" opens to the public on Monday
with the

official opening scheduled for January 29.
        "The previews are like public dress rehearsals for the cast
and crew

to get everything right before the opening night," the spokeswoman
said.
        Culture Club enjoyed chart success in the 80s with "Do you
really
want
to hurt me?" and "Karma Chameleon."

British singer Boy George combined a strong, soulful singing voice
with a provocative sense of fashion, both of which were first brought
to the attention of English and American audiences in the group
Culture Club, for which be served as lead singer from 1982 to 1986.
The group wrote and played impeccable pop music, and Boy George's
androgynous persona -- heavy makeup, outrageous costumes -- gave the
group a distinct video image in the dawn of MTV.

That very distinctiveness, however, made the group date quickly, and
at the same time Boy George encountered highly publicized personal
difficulties. He re-emerged as a solo singer in 1987 with Sold, which
contained a UK #1 cover of Bread's "Everything I Own," but was unable
to duplicate this success in the U.S. Boy George enjoyed four British
singles chart entries in 1987 and another three in 1988. His second
album, Tense Nervous Headache (1988) was not picked up for release in
the U.S.; his third, Boyfriend (1989) was a Europe-only release,
though Virgin Records cobbled the second and third albums together to
present a second U.S. album, High Hat (1989).

In 1991 came The Martyr Mantras, another patchwork album largely made
up of previously non-LP dance singles. In the U.K., it was credited
to a new group, Jesus Loves You, and released on Boy George's own
More Protein record label, though Virgin in the U.S. billed it as a
Boy George album. By 1992, Boy George had faded at home, and in the
U.S. his solo career had never taken off. Then he was brought in to
sing a version of the '60s chestnut "The Crying Game," in a
production by the Pet Shop Boys, as the title song for a movie that
became the sleeper hit of the winter of 1992-1993, resulting in his
first substantial U.S. hit as a solo artist.
