My work has scheduled a computer upgrade on several different weekends (all postponed). However, it's scheduled again for this Sunday so I don't know if I'll be able to make the dance revel or not.  Probably not, if things go as scheduled :(    - Amata

Hey guys,

Sorry I am late, but I said that I would post the info for the
sephardic artist whose music we heard last meeting. Her name is Judy
Frankel. Amazon.com carries a few of her CD's with sound clips. She
also has a songbook of sephardic songs that I am hoping to obtain. I
look forward to the next meeting.

Folks,
The scheduling of our last joint dance guild meeting was a little
rough for me due to King's Collge, but the combined meetings can be a
lot of fun. We could put together a much better practice with a few
more folks. Are there any percusionists hiding out there, looking for
a nudge? We'd love to have you! I'm sure a hammered dulcimer and a
tenor recorder would be fantastic too... ;)
The plan is to gather at 5 at the Wells Branch Rec center and run
through the dances, then do them with the dancers. This week is not in
garb, and it's fairly casual. Would folks like to get together for a
snack after the practice? It might be fun to socialize a bit too.

Doug and I hope to be there. We may not be there right at 5:00 as I have viola da gamba group until 4:30 and will have to swing by home to get Doug before coming to the guild.

I hope you guys had as much fun at practice last night
as I did. Getting together a bit earlier really
helped us tighten the pieces up, and the dancers
definitely noticed.
Our next practice is Friday, July 20th, at 7pm, at
Amplify Credit Union. We don't presently have a class
lined up for that date and if anyone would like to
teach one it's a good opportunity. In the past Amata
did a nice one on estampies, Padma did one on the
Sephardic Jews and their music, and I did one on the
Cantigas de Santa Maria. It doesn't have to take
long, and can focus on pretty much anything in early
music- specific songs, an instrument you'd like to
share, the history of a genre etc.
We'll also have a few new tunes which the dance
guild requested. I have a little work to do
deciphering some handwriting and hunting down good
arrangements of the pieces before then. I'd like our
non-dance guild practice to let us explore non-dance
music, so if you have pieces you'd like to try with
the group, bring some copies of it. Meanwhile, I
might suggest we revisit things which have been fun in
the past like Rampi rampi, the Sephardic pieces Padma
brought to us, the estampies Amata taught, and maybe a
few Cantigas.

sexysophia3165 has been blocked from the group, and
new memberships now have to go through me or
Stephanie. I'm sorry if that means you're missing out
on opportunities to meet biker babes.

The last thing I'd like to bring up is the idea a few
of us have been discussing of working with smaller
sectional ensembles. The intent is not to exclude
anyone, but to allow folks an opportunity to shine,
and with a little group it should be easier to arrange
consistent practices to perfect a small number of
pieces. I'd like to organize a recorder group. We
have the players we'd need for a nice string trio- I'm
thinking it would be violin, gamba and cello.
So feel free to discuss the idea here, or volunteer.
We'll need to find or create good arrangements of
songs we'd like to do, and figure out times to meet.
   Regards,
   Gaston de Clermont

Folks,
We've been asked to play at the Peer Appreciation
Tea on August 25th. There might be dancing, so we
might be asked to do some dance tunes. The remainder
could be what ever we'd like. It could even be the
small ensembles we've chatted about. The site is
indoors and air conditioned, and we have over a month
to prepare. Who's interested?

I have been asked to run an ice breaker dance list at the Peer
appreciation ( August 25). May I have your help. I believe it would be
wonderful to fill the hall with music and dance as a way to welcome back
the Peers. I'll be happy to suggest a ball list mostly from the list we
are presently working . Then do a walk through, and dance format. I'll
be happy to bring the boom box if we have a request we are not prepared
or feel we are not strong enough to present.
Respectfully submitted,
Isabella

music, so if you have pieces you'd like to try with
the group, bring some copies of it.

Isabella (the dance principle) requested we expand our
repetoire with the following tunes:
Montard
Madame Sosilia Alman
Bransle Suite (which has Pinagay, Charlotte, War and
Arida)
Anello
Gelosia
Grimsotck
Godesses
Ly Bens
Dull Sir John

We've run through a few of them, and the rest aren't
too tough. I'd like to take a run though them Friday
so they'll be in good shape at the next joint dance
practice. I'll have copies for everyone- plus a
couple other tunes which Sarah and Damian didn't get
earlier. Doing stuff from the book would be great
too, we'll just have to hustle to pack it all in and
be out by 9.
Since we do have to end a little early I'd like to
go out to grab a snack after practice and chat about
guild stuff, figure out exactly what we're doing for
the peer tea, recruiting, where we'd like to take our
music, and generally socialize. We can decide where
to do all that after practice.

Hi all,
It was with great interest that I received Zach's email only hours
after I contacted your music guild. My name is Joanie Marshall and I
am a K-12 Music teacher for RRISD and a former member of the Kingdom
of Northshield, Barony of Nordskogen, Shire of Silfren Mere. We have
been living in Texas since 2000 but just recently decided to reach out
to the SCA again. We live around the corner from the Wells Branch MUD
where you rehearse and I do play soprano recorder. I got more and more
excited as I looked at your pictures and read your notes. I have not
heard the words viola de gamma since Music History in 1995.

I realize that your next rehearsal is not until mid August, I go back
to school on August 15th and wondered if I could borrow some of your
music and see if it is at all similar to the historical music that I
have played in the past. I have the most time to practice in the next
three weeks before school starts back up.

Can't wait to hear from you, I already feel like we've come home.

Sincerely
Joanie Marshall

Just found your music files on this website and am most impressed that
they are stored in pdf files. Three cheers to whatever kind soul took
the time to perform that heroic feat.

If someone could send me a list of songs that are likely to be
practiced in the next month, I'll get busy downloading and printing
off them.

thanks so much.

Welcome! I hope you can join us on Sunday, August 12, for the Dance Guild mini-revel and play music with us.  My daughter is the orchestra director at Deer Park Middle school in Round Rock - Katharine Schreffler, perhaps you've met?  Looking forward to meeting you - Amata

I teach at Laurel Mountain Elementary, I will look up Katharine at
our meeting in August if they let elementary and secondary mingle at
the meeting. I downloaded the music on your group site and I'm going
to dig thru boxes to see if I can find my Silfren Mere music. We moved
last October and we are still unpacking boxes. I do have a whole
folder of group recorder music that I used in Minnesota and I think
its different from your music. That could be fun. We're going to try
to get to the concert on Saturday at the church. Hope to meet you soon.

Isobeau,
There's a ton of free sheet music out on the web for
what we do. The tricky part is that there are a lot
of different arrangements, and not all of them synch
up with what the dancers expect. I can bring copies
of what we're working on to the concert.
If you want to get a jump on things or hunt songs
down on your own, here's the list of songs we did last
time we met:
Madame Sosilia Alman
Bransle Suite (which has Pinagay, Charlotte, War and
Arida)
Anello
Gelosia
Grimsotck
Godesses
Ly Bens
Dull Sir John
With those you can get a better feel for the pieces,
but bear in mind our versions might be in a different
key, have different repeats, etc. The melody lines
tend to sound similar, but all the other parts are up
in the air.
   Gaston/Zach
