Installing a DVD Burner
Normally you want the DVD burner installed as the Master, on a separate IDE channel from your hard drives. Be sure to enable DMA.

Ripping: 1. DVD Decrypter
An essential tool for ripping DVDs of shows for sharing. Also a burner. Unfortunately, the official site was closed and development stopped because of the decryption feature - which isn't even used for sharing live music! But you can still find a download of the most recent version (3.5.4.0) on the web. Get it!

Shopping: 1. Anandtech - Storage Reviews
A good place to look for reviews on DVD drives. Skip to the conclusions page on those long reviews. You are going to be spending a lot of time with your burner, and feeding it a lot of expensive media - get a good drive, you'll be glad you did.

Shopping: 2. Videohelp Pricegrabber page
You can see comments on currently popular DVD burners here. (Listed by popularity, after the "featured products.") NOTE ON OEM OR BARE DRIVES: A lot of the drives listed as OEM or bare come without screws, cables, software or (in some cases) warranty. That might or might not work for you. If you're replacing a drive, you'll have cables and screws. If you're not sure, look for a deal on a retail kit.
