Pass the 'Anti-Bullying' Bill! Help us make schools safe for all
students! Marriage is also on people's minds, thanks to CA's Prop 8,and
impending antigay marriage initiatives (an anti-marriage equality
amendment is being announced next week, there are calls for anti-LGBT
sermons this Sunday, and an anti-LGBT rally is in a couple of weeks at
the capitol).
Stop the bigotry,stop the hate!

Hundreds of wolves got a last-minute reprieve when President Obama put
a freeze on Bush's midnight rule that would have stripped wolves in the
Northern Rockies of their endangered species protection -- leaving them
vulnerable to mass killing. But this "stay of execution" is only
temporary, pending review by the new Interior Secretary. The fate of
Yellowstone's wolves is hanging in the balance right now.Now we must
rush into action -- and convince Interior Secretary Salazar to reverse
Bush's deadly policy and maintain strong federal protection for wolves.
Please make your own voice heard.Send your Citizen Petition to Save
Wolves to the Interior Secretary now.We must act swiftly. Although
scientific evidence is on our side -- and the Interior Secretary has
pledged to rely on sound science when managing wildlife -- these wolves
have formidable enemies.

President Barack Obama has suspended the eleventh-hour attempt by
Bush Administration officials to eliminate vital protections for
hundreds of wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the rest of the
Northern Rockies. These beloved wolves have literally dodged a bullet.
Under the Bush plan, nearly 1,000 of these magnificent animals could
have been slaughtered. But Greater Yellowstone's wolves aren't out of
the woods yet. Officials in Idaho and Wyoming have already signaled
their intent to pursue delisting under their existing management
plans -- the same plans that would allow widespread killing of the
region's still-recovering wolf population.Take action now! Urge
President Obama and Dale Hall, head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, to permanently reject the Bush wolf plan and adopt a more
responsible, long-term approach to wolf management in the Northern
Rockies.A successful wolf management plan would ensure a lasting
future for these amazing animals with the most current science on
wolf recovery and collaborative input from conservationists, ranchers
and others concerned with the future of wolves in Greater Yellowstone
and the Northern Rockies.Send a message to President Obama and
Director Hall and urge them to abandon Bush's awful wolf plan and
instead develop one based on science and responsible management
practices. The Obama Administration can get wolf management right, but
they need to hear from you. Please take action now…

In a cruel parting shot before leaving office, the Bush Administration
has stripped wolves in Idaho and Montana of their Endangered Species
protection -- leaving them at the mercy of two states that are
gunning for them.Hundreds of wolves are effectively on death row. As
soon as the hunting seasons begin and "Open Fire" orders are issued,
state officials and hunters will fan out through Greater Yellowstone
and Central Idaho in search of an animal that should be on the
Endangered Species list.NRDC is racing to court to stop this
slaughter before it can begin. As you know, this is the second time
that the Bush Administration has removed federal protections from
wolves in the Northern Rockies.Last spring, more than 110 wolves were
brutally killed in as many days. The wolf-killing rampage only stopped
after NRDC and 11 other conservation groups prevailed in federal
court -- thanks to your support! We must win again -- because the
plight of wolves has never been more dire.Yellowstone's wolf
population has already declined,as wolf pups die of a yet-to-be-
determined disease. The bottom line is: Greater Yellowstone's wolves
urgently need and deserve federal protection. And thanks to your
steadfast support, they will have NRDC attorneys -- America's
toughest wildlife advocates -- fighting for them.
Thank you for caring so deeply about the plight of wolves -- and
standing with us in their defense.
(Natural Resources Defense Council)

If you want to help NRDC win another life-saving reprieve for wolves,
please make an emergency donation now. We've been able to save wolves
from years of relentless attacks by the Bush Administration only
because of your steadfast support at critical moments like this.

This year anti-whaling activists are under attack, too. Two Greenpeace
activists in Japan, where 71 percent of the population opposes the
government subsidized whaling program, recently found an illegal
stockpile of whale meat. But when they turned it into authorities, they
were arrested for trespass and theft! More than 2.9 million people
have joined the campaign after Greenpeace activists Junichi and Toru
(dubbed the "Tokyo Two") were arrested.Years have gone by and still
the Japanese government hunts whales under the guise of "scientific
research." But we're getting closer to ending whaling for good. All of
the signs point to a whaling industry that's both in disarray and
frustrated by the progress of the anti-whaling movement. The Tokyo Two
were held for 26 days without charge. They are now out on bail, but
still face criminal prosecution and up to ten years in prison. These
two activists have unearthed a dark underbelly of the whaling
industry, and the Japanese government has yet to investigate this
corruption. Now is the time for heavy pressure on the Japanese
government.Help Greenpeace Stop Whaling Forever.Please make a
donation to Greenpeace today to help fight whaling on the ground in
Japan. You can help end Japan's cruel whale hunt and support activists
who are fighting on the ground to save whales. Help Greenpeace today.

And I do, those things are sacred to me, they are why I spent 10 years searching
for a
"place of inspiration" to build my home when I retired. Each day when I look
out my
windows at the ever changing seen, I give thanks for the inspiration Mother
Nature
provides me, it's that love of Nature that drew me to John Denver's music and
his work
to protect those very things. The voice he gave to Nature spoke to my spirit
and formed
a bond to John, the bond we call love.

P.S.
Today I watched "Christmas in Washington" hosted by John Denver, I taped during
the
first Bush Presidency. John recited "The story of the Christmas tree that did
not want to
change". A Christmas tree named "Alfie", when he recited phrases you quoted
form that
story, I found a tear in my eye. He followed it with "The Flower That Shattered
The Stone."

Pease and a very Christmas my friend,
Dennis

Great words Randy,

And I do, those things are sacred to me, they are why I spent 10 years searching
for a
"place of inspiration" to build my home when I retired. Each day when I look
out my
windows at the ever changing seen, I give thanks for the inspiration Mother
Nature
provides me, it's that love of Nature that drew me to John Denver's music and
his work
to protect those very things. The voice he gave to Nature spoke to my spirit
and formed
a bond to John, the bond we call love.
Below is a photo of my living room windows, (wide angle, to get it all in. It
shrinks the
view outside) and one of each side. the others were taken from the deck outside
the
windows.

I believe Obama is reaching out to the other side. He doesn't agree
with Warren and it's not an endorsement of Warren's point of view. I
don't really know why we have to have a prayer anyway at the
inauguration. Seems like we have bigger things to worry about than a
prayer. I don't think our votes were wasted especially considering
the alternative. Like you said let's wait and see. I just wished we
could keep religion out of politics. What happened in California with
Prop. 8 was disgusting. The Mormon Church putting up all that money to
get people to vote their way.

Subject: Bush takes parting shot at endangered wildlife

"This(w's)administration's disdain for wildlife and the environment
has never been more clear than it is today," said Jamie Rappaport
Clark, executive vice president of Defenders of Wildlife and former
director of the Fish and Wildlife Service. "For 35 years, the
Endangered Species Act has helped save and recover imperiled wildlife
on the brink of extinction. Now, with this administration facing its
last days, they are doing everything they can to cement their anti-
environmental legacy before the Obama administration takes office."
Rushing to put in place changes it failed to secure in the past eight
years, the Bush administration has finalized new Endangered Species
Act (ESA) regulations today, cutting huge holes in the safety net
that protects animals and plants in danger of becoming extinct.First
proposed by the Department of the Interior a little over three months
ago, the new regulations will eliminate the requirement that agencies
seek advice from expert biologists with federal wildlife agencies in
decisions about whether dams, towers, highways and other projects
will likely harm imperiled species. The Bush administration's last
minute rulemaking has drawn heavy criticism from the public,
lawmakers, conservation groups and newspaper editorialists around the
country. More than 250,000 comments opposing the changes were
submitted to the Interior Department in the 60 days it allowed for
the public to respond to the changes. But the massive public outcry
seems to have fallen on deaf ears. In its push to finalize the rules
before President-elect Barack Obama takes office, the department had
only 15 people spend only 32 hours reading the comments, averaging
mere seconds in reviewing each of the more than 250,000 comments.
Department officials then ignored the major concerns raised by the
comments, making only cosmetic changes to the original proposals.
Both President-elect Obama and key Democratic leaders have signaled
that they will oppose the ESA changes. In addition, Defenders intends
to take immediate legal action to stop these regulations.Interior
Secretary Dirk Kempthorne has argued that the new regulations are
needed to keep the ESA from being used to limit emissions from coal
power plants and other polluting sources that contribute to global
warming. This continues the Bush administration's failed approach of
ignoring the problem."Global warming presents the greatest threat
this generation has seen to ourselves, our wildlife and our
environment, and yet the Bush administration has dragged its feet on
addressing the impacts of a warming planet for its entire time in
office," Clark said. "While the ESA by itself certainly can't provide
a comprehensive solution to global warming, its protections will be
essential in helping at-risk species survive a changing climate. If
allowed to stand, these regulations will deprive the Obama
administration of a powerful tool to protect wildlife and ecosystems
from the effects of global warming."Many of the ESA regulation
changes finalized today were tried before in a failed legislative
effort by former Representative Richard Pombo (R-CA), whose anti-
environmental record and repeated attacks on the ESA contributed to
his defeat in the 2006 elections. "The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
and the National Marine Fisheries Service are the keepers of the
flame for our threatened and endangered wildlife. They are equipped
to make decisions based on looking at the whole picture for a
species, on what's happening to their habitat, their health and other
significant impacts," Clark said. "It seems that the Bush
administration has prioritized the interests of its industry allies
over its responsibility to the public for protecting our nation's
imperiled wildlife. We will work in the courts, with Congress, and
with the Obama administration to overturn these damaging regulations,
so that we can begin to address the environmental neglect and damage
that has been done over the last eight years."
