What makes who feel old, now!?
I'm still the list owner here, actually. 259 people on the list
officially, but extremely tilted to several years ago, and a lot of the
list subscribers are shown as bouncing. So hard to say how many people are
really out there.
This is the 15th post of 2007. There were only 6 posts in all of 2006, all
last February. You have to back to 2002 to find a year with more than 100
posts.
The list was still pretty strong throughout Keep It Like A Secret and was
fairly active with Live came out, but activity trailed off toward the end
of 2001, a couple of months after Ancient Melodies of the Future came
out. I think Perfect From Now On set the bar so high, and Keep It Like A
Secret and Live came at least close enough to that bar to maintain
interest, and then there was an inevitable tumbledown. Doug's solo album
got little discussion here, the tours didn't get a lot of attention here...
and in some ways this is ironic, because the band's vitality as a live band
has never really gone down in my mind. They are probably my favorite
actively touring not-broken-up band still going. As much as anything it
seems symptomatic to me of having gotten to a point where I just spend less
time discussing things like this, and Built To Spill being a convergence
point for a lot of people who are really a lot like me in that
respect. Like Martin says: I feel a little old.
I've seen them six times. The only other bands I've seen as often are
Spoon (6) and Wilco (6), and Silkworm (9). I used to think that was a lot,
but really, it's not so much anymore. I've missed as many shows as I've
made. Just happens that way.
I was kind of underwhelmed by You In Reverse. I don't think I liked the
production so much, and not much grabbed me beyond "Goin' Against Your
Mind". I'm not sure what I wanted it to be; maybe most things underwhelm
me at this point, I don't know. Maybe too I didn't realize that it came
out last April. It seems like it's been three years. That's what this
kind of crazy hectic existence will do to your mind.
I recall that files were available of three nights they did in Minneapolis
or Seattle, something like that, and I used to have all that, but I don't
anymore. Anyone know where that's available?
