Poconuts are swinging from the trees with the re-formation of the band Poco and
the group’s newest release Running Horse. Running Horse shows Poco in fine form.
The band consists of Rusty Young (vocals, guitar), Paul Cotton (vocals, guitar),
Jack Sundrud (vocals, bass guitar) and George Grantham (drums). The end result
is a polished and great sounding CD. In fact, 11 songs on Running Horse are as
good as anything the band has ever done in the past. “One Tear At A Time”
reminds us of what was great about country-flavored rock in the first place.
“Ever Time I Heart That Train” continues in the same vein. The standout aspect
of the album is the songwriting. The emotional commitment to the creation of the
songs is evident.
In the end, there are not many rockers but Poco never had many rockers to begin
with. “Shake It” and “Running Horse” may be the best two overall songs on the
disc but that said, there are no clunkers. This is a fine effort and a welcome
return.
