here's a copy of the band's Luck-E-Letter for April 04
Hey everybody,
All hail the Queens of Boogie Woogie! Coming to Santa Cruz Mountains!
Local pianist Wendy DeWitt has organized two nights of boogie woogie piano
this month featuring legendary pianist/vocalist Carol Fran. Carol's
recorded for Excello, worked with Guitar Slim, Lee Dorsey, Joe Tex and
guitarist Clarence Holliman. She's got recent albums on Black Top, JSP and
has just released a new CD. Last year Carol headlined the show at the
Freight & Salvage and knocked out the audience. Doing everything from
singing in Creole to blues and jazz standards in her very personal and
soulfully entertaining style, Carol's scheduled 40 minute set last year went
over an hour and had the house yelling for more. Also part of the show are
San Diego piano dynamo Sue Palmer (who used to sport a bee-hive hair-do &
perform regularly with Candye Kane), Wendy DeWitt and Miss Carmen Getit plus
special guests (including Queen-For-A-Day Steve Lucky <oh behave>).
This Saturday the Rhumba Bums take the stage at Biscuits & Blues in San
Francisco, and NBC's DATELINE will be there filming, we'll tell you why at
another time...
Hope to see you at one of our LIVE shows!:

QUEENS OF BOOGIE WOOGIE
Freight & Salvage
Berkeley, CA
1111 Addison, just East of San Pablo Ave., one block South of University.
All hail the Queens of Boogie Woogie! This evening's musical royalty
includes vocalist Carol Fran, guitarist and singer, Carmen Getit, and
pianists Sue Palmer and Wendy DeWitt, in an evening of solo and duo
performances, plus plenty of surprises and spur-of-the-moment fun, with the
able support of drummer Kent Bryson and bassist Tim Wagar. Louisiana native
Carol, a crystalline-voiced singer with nearly six decades of smoldering R&B
and blues gems to her name, is known for her work with legendary studio
guitarist Clarence Holliman, Guitar Slim, Joe Tex and Lee Dorsey. Whether
wringing a mean moan from her Gibson or shoutin' the blues, Miss Carmen, the
trump card of popular Bay Area jump-swing band the Rhumba Bums, is known for
her powerfully swinging sound. Equally at home with 12-bar blues, boogie
woogie, swing, and jazz, Sue Palmer is a major figure in the San Diego music
scene, where she is known for her unique style and phenomenal left hand.
Hard-driving pianist and vocalist Wendy, the return organizer for this
evening of Queenly Boogie, pulls the evening together with her west coast
approach to deep blues and boogie.
Tickets $16.50 advance, $17 day of.
