and again ya'll,
you do realize that the bumrap, which the band has no control over,
[excellent! now you wicked ones are quickly plotting and scheming...
(sorry, too much Mr. Burns of the Simpsons)], is different from the
Luck-E-Letter which the band sends out monthly. If you wish to hear

BUT we're posting our August Luck-E-Letter here anyway:
Luck-E-Letter August 04: Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums, Carmen Getit! in
August
Hey Everybody!
Wow did we have fun last month with all the special shows. Vocalist/pianist
Carol Fran was an absolute delight, living up to her status as legendary.
Carmen learned along with the audience that Carol sang in Lowell Fulson's
band with Ray Charles. Carmen was thrilled to have her Carmen Getit! band
open Carol's shows, and play along side her all night long at Biscuits &
Blues in San Francisco. Two days later Carol and Carmen were featured with
Oakland pianist Beverly Stovall at the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival,
where they were joined by top-call jazz bassist Ruth Davies and drummer Kent
Bryson for a special show "Women In Blues & Boogie Woogie". Big thanks to
Ronnie Stewart for bringing legends of blues and soul to the Bay Area.
Carmen had the chance to hear and meet guitarist Texas Johnny Brown, whose
band took the stage next. Johnny Brown was an original member of Amos
Milburn's Aladdin Chickenshackers in the '40s. His guitar work can be heard
on Milburn's early Aladdin recordings as well as Ruth Brown's first Atlantic
Records sides. We wished we could make the second day of the Festival but
the Carmen Getit! band opened for Elvin Bishop on Sunday afternoon at Rancho
Nicasio's BBQ series, where Carol Fran sat in with us and got a standing
ovation. The Diva fun continued in July at Biscuits & Blues with "Divas of
the Blues" featuring Lavay Smith, Cathy Lemons and Carmen Getit, with an
all-star band including guitarist Anthony Paule, Chris Siebert and Steve
Lucky on piano - who by request, wailed a 4-handed boogie woogie to the
delight of the audience. Carmen had some fun with
bassist/should-have-his-own-comedy-variety-show Johnny Ace and drummer Robby
Bean (former Rhumba Bum). This was an improvistational night of mixing it
up in front of a packed, warm house. Each vocalist, Lavay Smith, Cathy
Lemons and Carmen Getit, was featured, and then the three Divas sang
together, improvising saucy lyrics to blues jams, and backing one another up
with vocal harmonies. Many, many thanks to DJs Byrd Hale of KZSU Stanford U
radio 90.1FM, and Noel Hayes, Avotcja and Johnny Brooklyn of San Francisco's
KPOO 89.5FM for their genuine support of the music.
Finally thanks goes to Jan Kelly from the Sacramento Blues Society who wrote
to tell us she saw Joe Getty raving about the Rhumba Bums' performance at
the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee:
"The other day I wandered into a gig where Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums
were swinging. I was blown away like I haven't been blown away in many,
many moons. Great musicians playing the hell out of great songs...and
putting on a show that matched the energy of the music. Steve Lucky and his
guitarist, the stunning Carmen Getit, ought to be world famous. I have a
new favorite live band: Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums."
