Luck-E-Letter October '04
---------------------------
Hello everybody!
We may have set a personal record with four outdoor music festivals in
September, many of them free to the public. But the highlight was
performing and listening at the 32nd Annual San Francisco Blues Festival,
where the Rhumba Bums appeared as the "Steve Lucky Jump Blues Revue" on
Sunday the 26th. This really is a great festival, and the longest
continuosly running blues fest in the US. It's held at the grassy fields of
Fort Mason, and this year we were bathed in sunshine while the Golden Gate
Towers were cradled in fog. Steve Lucky got a last-minute call to play
piano behind "The Mannish Boys" at the Blues Fest on Saturday. Leon Blue,
who was scheduled to play piano, left to join BB King on the road since BB's
pianist had to cancel. The Mannish Boys was jam-packed with featured
artists including the 82 years young Miss Mickey Champion. Mickey has a
rich history, including stints with the Johnny Otis band and Roy Milton &
the Solid Senders. She has a huge voice and personality to match, and still
performs regularly in her home base of Los Angeles. Also featured were
great guitarists Paris Slim and Kid Ramos, and harmonica player Randy
Chortkoff. The set continued to build with the soulful vocals & songwriting
prowess of Finis Tasby who has decades of experience, and harmonica/vocalist
Johnny Dyer who started his first band in 1954. Many of these artists have
recorded for a new label called Delta Groove - blues lovers will certainly
want to check them out at deltagrooveproductions.com. Big thanks again to
Tom Mazzolini for continuing to bring this world-class festival to San
Francisco.
Coming up this month we return to a San Francisco venue we haven't performed
in for years, Cafe Claude. Great French food, indoor and outdoor seating,
and a very intimate place to hear music - they've been supporting live music
for 12 years. We perform a *rare* Friday night at the historic Forester's
Hall in Redwood City, whcih sports a great wall-to-wall dance floor in
downtown Redwood City. And the Rhumba Bums return to Chico after 2 1/2
years - tell your friends.
The legendary Pinetop Perkins comes our way to celebrate the release of his
new CD "Ladies Man" on MC Records. This CD showcases Mr. Perkins in piano
and vocal duets with a huge roster of all-star women blues artists including
Carmen's heroine Ruth Brown, as well as several cuts which Pinetop recorded
live at Rancho Nicasio in Marin with Carmen Getit on guitar, Lisa Otey on
piano, Willie Big Eyes Smith on harmonica, Bob Stroger on bass, Kenny Smith
on drums and Elvin Bishop on slide guitar. This November, Carmen Getit,
Steve Lucky and bassist Luke Vesely will open two shows for Pinetop, and
then perform alongside these two Muddy Water's alumni: drummer/harmonica
player Willie Big Eyes Smith, and pianist/vocalist Pinetop Perkins. Willie
Smith held down the drum chair in Muddy's band from 1961 until 1980, when he
co-founded The Legendary Blues Band.
