here's a copy of our Luck-E-Letter for March 05
Hey everybody,
Be cool, just be cool...MGM's "Be Cool", that is. The Rhumba Bums have a
teeny-tiny part in the sequel to "Get Shorty" which opened last Friday in
theatres. In two scenes filmed one year ago at the Mayan Theatre in Los
Angeles, the Bums play themselves on-stage performing "Every Time I Hear
that Mellow Saxophone" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo". In case you blink and
miss us on the big screen, you'll discover we get more screen time in the
credits. We didn't make the sound track, but if demand is great enough
perhaps we can make a future release (hint, hint). While down in L.A. for
the shoot, the band made a stop at the Dresden Room on Vermont Street. The
room was rockin' out to the sounds of Marty and Elaine. That night Elaine
told Carmen that's indeed what happened to them with the soundtrack of
"Swingers".
Last week Steve & Carmen were invited to perform with the Michael Andrew
Atomic Big Band in Palm Springs, CA. Michael arranged "Daddy-O" and "Roll
'Em Pete" for the big band, and Carmen sang "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My
Baby" and Anita O'Day's hit with Gene Krupa: "Boogie Blues". It was a
thrill to play with the band, jam-packed with some of L.A.'s finest jazz
musicians. Many of you are familiar with Michael's clever and catchy
songwriting on "She Could Be A Spy" with his band Swingerhead. But hearing
him sing with a big band was a first for us. He has a beautiful voice with
great range and expression. He sings ballads just beautifully and swings
the sh**# out of upbeat tunes. Definitely check out his big band CD "A
Tribute to Frank Sinatra". You can find more info about him at
swingerhead.com.
In other news last month, 91 year old Pinetop Perkins' grammy-nominated CD
"Ladies Man", on which Carmen plays guitar, did not win the Grammy for best
traditional blues, but Pinetop did walk away with a well-deserved Lifetime
Achievement Award.
We have many private engagements coming up, so come out to a public show
when you can! We're heading down to Southern California this weekend - tell
your friends. Also this month we return to the Ashkenaz in Berkeley and
Rancho Nicasio in Marin County.
