Luck-E-Letter January 2006: Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums

Happy 2006 to one and all,

We rang in the New Year with many of you at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco.  It was a great night, it was sold-out, and we had a ball sharing the billing with our long time friends Vise Grip, Morty, and the brilliant Connie Champagne, and Mr. Lucky with former Rhumba Bum saxophonist Ralph Carney.  But what many of you may not know is December 31st has been proclaimed “Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums featuring Miss Carmen Getit” Day in San Francisco.  Don’t ask why.  And we followed up one sold out show with another in Sacramento on January 6th – over 280 people showed up at Midtown Stomp, it was a great night, and we look forward to going back in April.

In two short weeks Steve Lucky will present, along with Jazz at Pearls, the 2006 San Francisco Boogie Woogie Summit.  The annual boogie-woogie party goes back quite a few years, and this year will mark the two founders performing together in a special duet show on Saturday night.  I’m talking about Chris Siebert, pianist and bandleader of the world famous Lavay Smith & the Red Hot Skillet Lickers, and Steve Lucky:  the two of them and one frightened piano.  These shows sell out, so buy your tickets early.  The format will be a little different this year in keeping with the new successful format Pearl’s now uses to present all their shows.  There will be three pianists presented each night for two long shows.  Pearls will also sell a discounted “boogie-pass”.   If you love Boogie Woogie get set for four days of bliss! An all-star line-up of piano talent including Eric Shifrin, Steve Lucky, David K, Mathews, Mitch Woods, Wendy DeWitt, Frederick Nighthawk, Bob Welsh, Caroline Dahl, Carl "Sonny" Leyland, Chris Siebert, Sid Morris and blues legend Leon Blue.  Check out Pearl’s website for details of the nightly performers.

I made a big MISTAKE about our dates in our last newsletter.  We’ll be at the Ashkenaz in Berkeley Friday January 20th, not the 1/28.

We’re working on short tours in the Midwest (Michigan, Illinois etc) in early July, and the East Coast (D.C., and ??) around April 15th, so if you have a venue or event you’d like us to play in those areas – let us know NOW!

We do look forward to seeing you out and about!  Now stay tuned for our upcoming shows:
