Hey bumrappers,

Here is a copy of our band’s newsletter for January & February.  If you wish, please sign up for it directly by sending an email to subscribe at luckylounge dot com.  It doesn’t get spammed because we are in complete control, unlike this yahoo group.  You can choose to receive it only when we're performing near you, or every month.  Just let us know.

Hope to see you out and about,

Carmen & the Boys

Luck-E-Letter January February 2008:  new date added: Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums, Hammond Cheese Combo & more

Hello Again,

Oops!  Thanks to many of you for pointing out that I forgot to list our show this Saturday February 9 at Rancho Nicasio in Marin County.  If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and journey to this historic gem of a roadhouse-turned cozy, unpretentious supperclub.  They have a nice, big, wooden dance floor, laid back atmosphere, and you can sit at a white linen clad table or at the big old-fashioned bar.  All ages, full bar, and nice lighting.  And do check out the vintage western artwork in the room to the left of the bar.

Now on with the letter we sent out this month, but with the Rancho Nicasio date added!

Cheers,

Carmen Getit (& Steve Lucky)

Luck-E-Letter January February 2008: Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums, Hammond Cheese Combo & more

Hey everybody,

Happy 2008, and greetings from London, where we’re scouting out some business opps.   When we get back to California we’ve got a whopping February calendar and we’d love to see you at a show.  Plus we have some information about a major medical surgery required by one of the Rhumba Bums.

We started the year off with over two weeks of shows at Harrah’s Casino in Laughlin, NV, ringing in the New Year at their Fiesta Showroom, followed by Tony Orlando, the Spinners and former Johnny Cash alumni the Tennessee Three.  We served up a Rhumba Bums version of a Vegas-style show – you would have been proud - matching costumes, cues, choreographed dancers including the likes of L.A.’s finest Minn Vo (www.minnandcorina.com) with Angel Jenkins, and Laura Keat (www.laurakeat.com) with Jeremy Otth.  Check these folks out – you may have seen them dancing on stage at a Smokey Robinson concert, or on the TV show Dancing with the Stars.  They are hot!

It was an interesting experience, but we were so glad to get back to the Bay Area and eat some real food.

We’ve got some great shows coming up, so don’t miss out.  We return for two nights this month at one of our favorite SF haunts:  Biscuits and Blues.  Great Ambiance plus full bar, southern cuisine, and it’s all ages.  Come on down!  And we return to Southern Cal with shows in Pasadena and a free show outside San Diego at the Viejas Casino.  Come out and join the dance contest for a chance to win $5000.  (there is another $5000 doled out for 2nd & 3rd place finishers).  And Mendocino County gets Lucky this month – it has been an awfully long while – but we’re returning to the legendary Caspar Inn in, you guessed it:  Caspar CA.  Tell your friends!  And we’re excited to return to Sacramento for an all ages show at the historic Eastern Star Ballroom –  where they always have a good turn out (no that’s not a dance joke).

Finally, the jazz black sheep of the Lucky family of bands, the Hammond Cheese Combo, makes a rare appearance this month as Hammond B3 aficionado Pete Fallico (www.doodlinlounge.com) presents his weekly Hammond Organ night at Jazz at Pearl’s, in the heart of San Francisco’s North Beach.  This is a great room to hear the B3 peoples, so come on out!  Plus you’ll get to hear some serious, greasy sax blowing by our beloved saxophonist Scott Edog Petersen, who will soon undergo a double lung transplant.

Yes it’s true.  Some of you may know that Scotty suffers from the congenital disease cystic fibrosis, or simply, CF.  But many of you may have never guessed, because of Scott’s awesome musicianship -  the cat can really blow the saxophone!  I don’t want to sound like I’m writing his obituary, but against all odds Scott has made a successful career as a saxophonist despite his medical hurdles and the uncertainty of the music business.  He was the lead tenor soloist for years in the late legendary jazz drummer J.C. Heard’s band, which led to many Midwest gigs with Dizzy Gillespie.  In addition to performing with B3 organists Jack McDuff, Shirley Scott, Lonnie Smith and Bill Heid, Scotty excelled in the pop realm as well, performing with Aretha Franklin, the Four Tops, Burt Bacharach and the Temptations.  Don’t stop there – the Dog can get awfully funky too, performing and recording with soul singers Howard Tate and Bettye Lavette.   He’s been an arranger – writing for blues act Jonnie Bassett to works by Bach and Debussy for the Bishop St. Saxophone Quartet - as well as a college lecturer of jazz history and instructor of jazz saxophone  Scott moved to the Bay Area from the Midwest, and he’s currently a featured soloist in our bands (since 1996), Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums and our Hammond Cheese Combo, when he’s not on the road with other acts including the Stan Kenton Alumni Orchestra, or playing in town with just about everybody like Lavay Smith & the Red Hot Skillet Lickers.

The time has come for the double lung transplant and we expect nothing but more success & humor from Scotty.  The operation requires him to remain within 30 minutes of UCSF in San Francisco for a period of about 6 weeks following the surgery.  Because he lives farther away in Marin County, Scott is looking for a place in San Francisco, or preferably in Southern Marin County, where he can stay close to his home but also close to the Hospital in case of complications.  If you know of a home for rent, please let us know.  The downside is, once Scott’s name is officially added to the transplant waiting list, which we expect to occur in late February or March,  there will only be about 24 hours notice before he goes in for surgery.  Then he will remain in the hospital for a period of one to three weeks barring complications.  After all of that, he would need to move in to a place within the 30 minute drive radius.  So you can see the difficulty in securing a place, when he can’t tell potential landlords exactly what dates he will need it.

Many people have asked what can they do to help Scotty Dog?

1)  If anyone has the skills to set up a website for donations, that would be so welcome!   Though Scott has friends and family who are traveling across the country to pitch in and care for him, musicians generally don’t receive disability or sick pay.  When we don’t work, we don’t get paid.   We plan on doing a benefit show, but frankly, more money can be made for Scotty, and more quickly, through direct donation.  We really don’t know when Scott will be able to go back to work, but at best it will be several months.

2) If you do know of a place Scott could rent for a month or 6 weeks on short notice, let us know!  He could get a hotel room, but a space with a kitchen and less traffic would be so much nicer to help Scotty heal.  Not too mention he has to limit his exposure to germs, since the anti-rejection drugs he’ll have to take to protect the foreign lungs have the downside of lowering the body’s ability to mount an immune defense against infection.  This place would need to accommodate Scotty and his caregiver.

3) Get him a gig, just once, with Bonnie Raitt – is that too much to ask?

Thanks all.  We hope to see you at a show soon!

Now stay tuned for our upcoming shows:
