Luck-E-Letter May 2008: Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums
Hey Hey Hey everybody,
Lots of things are happening in Rhumbabum Land……
We’ve put some live footage of the Rhumba Bums up on youtube.com, so feel
free to check it out and make comments! We ended up getting a gig in China
with it. Here’s a link to one of the videos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_58OAtBm1es Or go to youtube.com and search
on “Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums”.
We only have a couple of nightclub performances, but both are whoppers!
First of all, this Friday, May 2nd we’ll be performing at San Francisco’s
premiere nightspot for live music, Biscuits and Blues. If you haven’t seen
us there, you really should! It’s a very comfortable club, cozy, good food,
good views from all seats and we always have a great rapport with the
audiences there. Listen to San Francisco’s KPOO 89.5 fm,
http://www.kpoo.com/, on Wednesday April 30 when Steve Lucky calls in to DJ
Noel Hayes at 10:30 am.
Then later in the month on Sunday May 18th, we’ll have a very rare double
bill with the fabulous Lavay Smith & her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, in a
special dance concert to raise money for our beloved saxophonist, Scott
“Edog” Petersen at one of the best dance venues in the Bay Area, Berkeley’s
Ashkenaz. Scotty will soon undergo a double lung transplant due to the
congenital disease cystic fibrosis. In addition to sets by Lavay’s band and
the Rhumba Bums, we’ll have an extra big band performance. Lots of
musicians are coming in support of Scotty, so it will be a treat for
listeners and dancers alike to hear some Count Basie big band charts played
by top Bay Area jazz players. We’ll have some special door prizes to raffle
off, including a Private Tour & Tasting at Arrowood Vineyards & Winery for
up to four people with a complimentary bottle of wine from their classic
wine list to take after the tour and tasting. The value of the package is
$165. Special thanks to Rhumba Bum fan Cindi Gehrke of Arrowood Winery for
the donation in Scotty’s battle with CF. We’d love to get some more great
door prizes, so please write if you have goods or services to donate for the
raffle or auction…..It’s not too late! Scott is officially on the
transplant list, which means he’s on-call and must report to the hospital on
short notice when his new lungs arrive. BUT – if he hasn’t gotten his new
pipes yet, he’ll also be there. Send a note and/or make a donation to help
Scotty now:

On Memorial Day weekend we’ll be performing at the world famous Sacramento
Jazz Jubilee, the largest and oldest traditional Jazz festival on the
planet. We’ve got 10(!) performances over 4 days there and there are
hundreds of other bands to see as well. It’s a unique experience and a real
treasure of northern California. We have a little surprise for those of you
that have been waiting for something new from us and we’ll have it there
with us…….
The baby corner:
Since the fans have asked, here goes. Monique Rose is nearly 18 months
old. She’s adding some words to her vocabulary, like “No!”, and “Esss”
(yes), trying to sing along to any song, including the ABCs. She can say
her cat Raul’s name, but it sounds like “Wa-wu”. She pretends to read the
newspaper, so one day we were helping her “read” when she parroted “Obama”,
but it sounded more like “my MA ma”. She’s getting into music and dance
more and tries to choose the music we listen to at home. If she doesn’t
like a song, she’ll use sign language to indicate a song is “done” or over.
And if we have no music playing she signs she wants to hear music. She
didn’t learn to walk until a few months ago, but she’s already
stopped....now she only runs. Everywhere. Non-stop……
