Luck-E-Letter July 2008: Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums
Hey there everyone,
We just returned from 3 nights of shows in
We’ve
got shows coming up in Sacramento
on the 4th of July
– tell your friends, plus a jazz festival July 11-13th in Mammoth
Lakes CA, and a return to the swanky Bing Crosby’s in Walnut Creek CA on July 9, and more shows yet to be announced
in August and September in addition to Biscuits
and Blues in San
Thanks
to all who came to the Candye Kane Benefit show at Biscuits and Blues on June
8. It was a blast – especially amusing were Kid Andersen, Steve
Lucky, and Rick Estrin as co-auctioneers for the artist-signed fantasy breasts
and “Dinner with
And
thanks to all who attended the Scott Edog Petersen Benefit Dance Concert at the
Ashkenaz on May 18th. We had a packed house listening and
dancing to Lavay Smith & her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, plus a special set of
Lavay with her Big Band! And sitting in, Mr. Bud E Luv, Kim Nalley and
Jackie Payne, followed by the Rhumba Bums plus Chris Binnings & more
members of Stompy Jones. Probably 50 or 60 musicians were there and we
managed to get many of them to perform. Thanks to all the many, kind
folks who donated items. Lots of people walked away with door prizes and
raffle items, and nearly $5000 was raised for Scotty. He’s doing
fine and still waiting for his set of lungs to come in. For those who
don’t know, Scott has played saxophone in the Rhumba Bums since 1996, and
he suffers from the congenital disease cystic fibrosis. He is on the
waiting list for a double lung transplant and can’t travel from the Bay
Area in case his new set of lungs arrive. http://www.scottpetersen.org/
. If you would like to donate to Scotty, it’s not too late.

The
baby corner:
Since
the fans have asked, here goes. Monique Rose is nearly 20 months
old. She’s assertive at the playground, going up to children and
laughing in their faces, or touching them, or talking babble to older children
as if they might understand her. She readily goes on walks with waiters
at restaurants, dances more and with arm movements as if she’s doing an
underarm turn, and has added lots of foot stomping. She says thank you
and “peez” (please) with prompting, and says many colors like
“bEE-you” (blue), “le-lo” (yellow), and something
barely recognizable for purple. Oh and she plays the drums, kazoo,
and sings along with many songs like the ABCs or any blues tune with the words
“baby” in it...she seems particularly keen on Big Joe Turner, and
she even recognizes recorded music of mom and dad. She likes to give
kisses to mom and dad, to her baby dolls and stuffed cat and dog, and to
babysitters.
