Subject: Luck-E-Letter January 2009: Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums

Hello friends and fans,

Welcome to the future!  I mean, doesn’t 2009 sound kind of futuristic?  Well, here we are, so put on your jetpacks and let’s go out and hear some music!  No excuses accepted….hang the economy, forget the weather, traffic is only a minor inconvenience.  Your life is right now….as Carmen sings in “It’s Later Than You Think”, “You better have your fun while you’re feeling in the pink”.  Do you know what I’m saying!  NO REGRETS!

You have plenty of opportunities to have some fun with us, and our band does like to have fun, these winter months when it’s too cold to hang out outside.  Besides lots of full-on Rhumba Bums shows and great dance events, you have some rare chances to see Steve Lucky back at the old pianoforte all by himself.  That’s right, Steve Lucky unplugged, smashing away on the piano without the help of his sidekick Ms. Getit.  Don’t worry, no divorce papers in sight, just a need to get back to some good old piano playing without the cute crutch.

Don’t miss a rare appearance of the Rhumba Bums at the historic Top of the Mark in San Francisco at the Mark Hopkins Hotel tomorrow night.  Unbelievable views, beautiful dance floor, a romantic spot where WWII soldiers took their sweeties before shoving off in the ‘40s.  And the Rhumba Bums return to Joe’s of Lafayette on the 16th, where we’ll help Joe celebrate 4 years of bringing his San Diego feel-good beach vibe to the east side of the East Bay.  Tell your Southland friends we’re excited to  party with the lovely Stevens sisters in Pasadena on Jan 24th, and make our third appearance at the annual David Patrone Swing Dance challenge at the Viejas Casino outside San Diego on the 25th, where you can earn a chance to win 5K with your fancy dance moves.  Plenty of folks listening and enjoying the music and dancing in their own special way too, so don’t feel like you have to compete (but sheez – there are some AWESOME dancers to watch).  It’s a nice room.

If you can’t come party with us in person, you have more opportunities to hear the Bums.  You can download us on iTunes!!!  Thanks to the wonderful folks at CDBaby.com (where you can also purchase our music as of November), the Rhumba Bums are finally available for download, and this time it’s legitimate.  That’s right, a  fan wrote a while back to ask why the rest of our CD wasn’t available on iTunes, we checked, and discovered almost our entire album was available under a different title.  Never did get to the bottom of it, but the trail went from iTunes, to a music distributor in Sacramento, to a business in Switzerland…and we never reached them, but iTunes honored our request to remove our music from their site.  We’re back now so check it out and tell your friends who like to buy their stuff digitally.

Thanks to those who turned out for the New Year’s Eve bash at the ever-enjoyable retro ballroom Bimbo’s in San Francisco – plenty of horsing around on stage with Leland PressOn and the lovely and talented Leslie Presley.  Loved the Cottontails – especially the vocals of Karina Denike – definitely check her out!  And of course Stompy Jones tore it up with an all originals set.  All this plus the lady in the fishbowl and the various uncoverings of Kitty Kitty Bang Bang.   Oh, and a fan from Arizona showed up with a magazine of photos of our band – he did a nice job – and you can peruse it and other bands and/or purchase one for yourself on-line at http://magcloud.com/browse/Issue/5425

The Baby Corner:

You’ve asked for it.  The youngest “Bum” is now 26 months old.  Her vocabulary is increasing exponentially, she built her first snow man and snow “spouse” over the Xmas holidays in Northern Michigan, went sledding for the first time, and experienced the wonders of gift-giving and holiday lights & decorations.  Grandma gave her gifts early, so she could watch Monique enjoy them without the frenzy of cousins and relatives.  After opening the third wrapped gift from a large box, daddy said to her “Now Monique what do you say to Grandma?”  Monique thought about that for a moment, looked back at the large box and replied “More?”.   In her defense she does say “peeze” and “kake-you” a lot.  She sounds a little like Spanky from the Little Rascals with her “Oh, otay”.  She has difficulty with the letter k, and uses t instead (“More Milt, peeze”).  She’s a natural on the harmonica as it turns out, and the day she was handed one she blew in and out, and up and down the harp, singing and playing a call and response tune like an old blues pro.  Visual if you will: sing:  “pee pee a potty”, blow a few licks on the harp, “poo poo a potty”, blow more licks…repeat…dance.

Now stay tuned for our upcoming shows:
