OK, the gig was a while ago now (September actually), but we're sure
Dub fans will still appreciate this show review from Jenni Holmes.
(Now that we're got our website up and running, we're able to fit in
a lot of good stuff we we couldn't get into TEARAWAY!)
SALMONELLA DUB SATURDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER DUX dE LUXE, Christchurch
Tiki Taane ( vocals, engineer, guitar) Conan Wilcox (saxophone,
percussion vocals) Andrew Penman (guitar) Mark Tyler (bass) Dave
Deakins ( Drums, vocals). Who are they? New Zealand's much loved band
Salmonella Dub, who celebrated their fourth album's `Inside The Dub
Plates' recent success of the number one chart topper with a mad gig
at Christchurch's very own Dux de Luxe.
The party - goers arrived at the Dux in a swarming crowd of
umbrellas, rainjackets, woollen hats and some very soggy tickets
worth $11.50 - a cheap price to pay for a good night out.
The day had had a promising start of sunshine only to turn to heavy
rainclouds that could have threatened the much awaited gig. However
the site of Tiki Taane on stage provided much relief to all that the
show would go on as planned.
Dubwise, Verse 2
The concert started at around eight thirty to the grooves of
supporting bands Dubwise and Verse 2 who's vocals were sung with
heavy reverb and the occasional piercing sound of technical
difficulties with their equipment. They got it right in the end and a
small crowd lingered on the courtyard to dance. The not so brave
gathered under the huge awning with heat lamps for extra comfort, and
the rain slowed to a light stream that could only be seen with the
coloured lights on stage, a quite nice natural visual display that
couldn't be seen without lights to the naked eye.
On come the Dubs
Sal Dub kicked off at 11pm with their mix of dance, dub and
drum'n'bass. Their solid basslines got the crowd moving immediately,
a strong impact after the mellowness of the supporting bands.
`Johnny' from third album `Killervision' got people out from under
the awning and by the time `Love Your Ways' rolled around everyone
was really into it, singing along and feeling just quite stoked that
Sal dub was not put off by the rain and giving it their all.
Altogether Sal Dub played around nine songs, mostly
from `Killervision' and `Inside The Dub Plate's and some older
favourites like `Conspiracy Dub' to get everyone grooving.
Towards the end of the night they played a fast paced track where you
were unable to tell where the beat would begin and end, a continuous
swirl of what can only be described as deep-throated bass, a sax that
could put Lisa Simpson to shame and a series of beats and bleeps to
pump the crowd up even more.
All in all this night of live instrumentation really was cranking,
the atmosphere was fantastic and dub lovers were brought together to
enjoy a truly breathtaking experience of great music an a celebration
by all for the recent success of Inside The Dub Plates. Watch out for
more of Salmonella Dub - after ten years they are still playing on
strong and getting better and better. So if you haven't seen them
yet, keep your eyes peeled for the next gig. These guys are hot.
