Summer's over; Rhythm & Roots has come and gone. The air turns cool and
crisp, and you know it's time for a bountiful harvest of... Zydeco! That's
right, this fall there will be several chances to get out and dance your
blues away with River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs.

If you're an ESPN employee, or a friend or family member of one, you can
party with The Hogs on Friday, September 7. The ESPN Corporate Picnic at
Lake Compounce will feature three hours of Zydeco, beginning at 5:30 PM.
Open only to ESPN employees, their families and friends.

On Saturday, September 15, join River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs at one of
the best fall fairs in CT -- the Terryville Country Fair at the Terryville
Fairgrounds in (where else?) Terryville CT. The Zydeco dance party begins
at 2:30 PM. For info or directions, call 860-585-7597 or follow this link:
http://hometown.aol.com/tvillelion/tvillelion.html

Gilrein's, Worcester MA 'Home of the Blues' welcomes The Zydeco Hogs back on
Saturday, September 22. The show starts at 9:30 PM. The Hogs love playing
Gilrein's -- we come back every few months. Join us on the 22nd and find out
why! For info or directions, call 508-791-2583 or follow this link:
http://www.gilreins.com/

Bristol CT is known as the 'Mum City'. Every September, the annual Mum
Festival takes place at various locations in town. The week-long event
culminates with a parade, and the crowning of the 'Mum Queen'! On Saturday,
September 29, River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs will be playing at the Minor
Family Farm at 3:00 PM as part of the weekend festivities. Call
860-589-0861 for directions and/or information.

On Sunday, September 30 at 8:00 PM, Zydeco returns to historic Cheney Hall
in Manchester, CT, as part of the ongoing Performing Arts Series there.
Houston's hottest band, J. Paul Jr. & The Zydeco Nubreeds, will be making a
rare New England appearance. The Zydeco Hogs are proud to be opening the
show. Don't miss this special event! Cheney Hall will be set up cabaret
style, with tables and chairs, but with plenty of room for dancing. For
tickets, directions, or other info, call 860-647-9824 or check the website
at: http://www.cheneyhall.org/

On Sunday, October 7 from 1 - 9 PM, Bishop's Castle at 177 Austin Farm
Road in Exeter RI will be the site of a special Zydeco Dance Party to
benefit Bill Molloy and the Springtime Cajun Dance Festival. This party is
the second benefit planned to help Bill recover from the forced cancellation
of this year's festival in Stanfordville, NY. Over the last ten years, Bill
has consistently given us the most laid-back, enjoyable music festival
imaginable -- now it's our turn to give something back. Bands donating their
time to make this event happen include River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs,
The Zydecats, and members of Magnolia and Slippery Sneakers. Come enjoy a
day of great music and dancing at one of the coolest places in RI, all for a
good cause. This is a potluck event, so bring some food to share. For more
info, contact Kathy Hannon at kahgator@... or call 401-392-0212.

We hope to see you at one or all of these great events! Meanwhile, take a
look at The Hogs' website http://home.talkcity.com/dharmadr/rivercityslim/,
which has been recently updated with links to a variety of C/Z resources
(schedules, bands, radio, etc.) on our new links page. Laissez les bon

Just got back from Plaisance today. Had a great time at the Festival dancing in
the mud. Too bad so many people got scared off by the rain and mud. Those of
us who made it had a great time. I think it was actually better than dancing in
the hot sun and all that dust. Slim's and Richard's were jumping Friday and
Saturday night. I didn't make it to any of the parties on Sunday, just did some
leisurely sight-seeing around Opalousas. I guess I'm just getting too old to do
it all any more. Stopped by Savoy Music Center Saturday morning before going to
the Festival and ordered a new Bb accordion since mine got stolen last year.
Tina said I can expect it sometime in November or December. Don't know if I can
wait that long............

Does anyone know the name of the guitar player who is currently
touring and playing lead with Chris Ardoin & Double Clutchin'? We
caught their killer sets at Rhythm & Roots this weekend, and this
man's fine fine playing absolutely smoked me. He also turned up at
the dance tent on Saturday night to play with Donna the Buffalo,
trading licks with Jim Miller and Jeb Puryear. Yea you right! We'd
like to give him credit on the tapes.

FYI: Album credits identify Nat Fontenot as playing lead on Ardoin's
most recent Rounder release _Best Kept Secret_.

I have a photo I can send along or post, as needed to help identify
him. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Gumby

Hi everyone, and welcome to a brand new month. Man, where did the summer go? Is
it just me or do things just go by faster these days? Wanted to remind everyone
that this Friday, Sept.7th, and Sunday, Sept.9th, ZYDECO FORCE will be playing
at the Eagles Hall in Alameda. They will making their Alamdeda debut this
weekend, so come on out and show them what Alameda and the Eagles Hall are all
about. As usual,on Friday, I will be giving a dance lesson at 8, with music at
9pm. Cost is $13 in advance, or if you get to the Hall by 8:30pm. After that
cost will be $15. So come early, dance hard, stay till the end. Heard Zydeco
Force sounded great in Plaisance, and it's a treat to have them here. The Sunday
show will start around 5:30, and if there are any folks around I'll do a short
lesson around 5. Cost for that show is $10.

Many things are coming up in the next few months:

Roy Carrier-Friday Sept. 21st

Horace Trahan-Friday, Sept.28th

Kenny Menard and Bonne Musique Zydeco-Friday, Oct. 5th

Chris Ardoin and Double Clutchin'-Friday, Oct. 19th

Zydeco Flames-Friday Oct.26th(Sixth Annual Halloween Costume Party)

LeRoy Thomas-SATURDAY, Oct.27th

Mark ST.Mary-SUNDAY,Oct.28th(show at 5)

The Flames, LeRoy, and Mark are playing for the Bay Area Dance Camp weekend.Kent
and Ann, from Baton Rouge, will be here to teach so smooth moves.Anya Sander and
myself will also be teaching Waltz and some Merengue moves that many folks have
asked about. It's funny, how some folks don't like to hear Merengue at dances,
but everytime I put one on during the break between bands at Eagles Hall, the
floor is packed. Also, there will be a
spotlight dance with many folks from the Sparks, Nev. dance contest. Something
new, a Jack and Jill dance contest. For those who aren't familiar with Jack and
Jill, it's a cool thing where folks who participate put their names in a hat,
and are drawn at random, so no one knows who is dancing with whom. It's
something that I think will be alot of fun to do, and that's what we aim for
here, is TO HAVE FUN.

Thanks for all the support, and remember to keep dancing.

I may never live to see the day that a festival asks for feedback so
here is some unsolicited feedback of my first experience to
Ninigret ;)

1. The workshops dance floor (not the main floor) was the most
wonderful dance floor I have ever danced on in terms of springiness.
It actually felt like one of those dive bars who's floor is kind of
weak and you can actually feel it move up and down while you dance.
My knees may never again find as wonderful a springy floor as the
workshops floor.

2. Seating... ok I know your supposed to bring lawn chairs but like
many large festivals I flew there and did not want to drag my lawn
chair on the plane nor did I want to buy one... so if your drawing
that many folks, increase the price of the admission 50 cents and
rent some more tables with a few umbrellas for your customers ! :)

3. Workshops were good but at least hire or ask for a few folks to
donate some time and teach some intermediate zydeco or cajun moves.
From what could tell and experienced there was only about a 1/2 hour
basic lesson on each day of cajun or zydeco instruction.

4. Sound... Very Good ! It was the first festival in a long time
that I didn't always need my ear plugs. It was still a wee bit loud
in some places but it was great compared to many festivals that blow
my ears off !

5. Lighting... Very Good (and dim)!! It was nice that the dance
floor was not too bright so it felt a little like a Louisiana bar ;)

Thats all for this comment card :)

I just wanted to mention an accordion workshop that is being put
together with some local experienced players from the Los Angeles and
San Diego areas.

Date: On a Sunday afternoon from 12-4pm (exact date is being
determined)
Location: The Barn in Tustin (Orange County)
Instruction: Were getting 2-3 players from local Cajun and Zydeco
groups to share some basic, intermediate and advanced info.
Cost: $20/person

We have a list of over 20 folks who are interested at the moment so
it should be a good gathering. If you know someone who maybe
interested please forward this message or send me there email and I
will make sure they are notified of the exact date and time.

Historically, when the festival was promoted as a Cajun/bluegrass fest
at the Stepping Stone Ranch there was much more C/Z dance instruction
including intermediate level classes. In fact one year I was in the band
backing Mona Wilson's intermediate classes. These were dropped over the
years, I'd guess for a few reasons:

1. beginning classes are most important, to get first time attendees
onto the floor
2. the greater diversity of the festival brought demand for swing dance
instruction
3. in the past, intermediate sessions were much more sparsely attended
than beginner sessions (Mona's were an exception, but it was more
spectators than dancers)
4. less emphasis overall on dancing

In any event, if you go to the festival web site, there is contact info
there and you can always email or snail mail you thoughts to the
promoters.

Greg,

There actually were feedback forms available to fill out. The
producers actually made a change to the main stage dance floor
location based on last year's feedback regarding line of sight
problems (You couldn't see the stage from any part of the dance floor
last year).

Klondike Sound has done the sound on Labor Day in RI for many years.
They also do several other festivals in the Northeast, including Grey
Fox, Falcon Ridge and Winterhawk in NY and Green River in MA. If you
see the Klondike name on a festival flyer, that's a good thing.

As for chairs, those new fold-up chairs in a bag travel well on
airplanes (I've brought mine with me a couple of times).

Overall, I thought that Rhythm & Roots at Ninigret was a great,
professionally executed festival. The music was uniformly excellent,
drawing from several different styles of roots music, with a heavy
emphasis on dance music. The site itself is great, being flat with
the main stage area bounded by wooded areas, the swimming pond and
the ocean within walking distance.

I agree that something other than beginner dance lessons would be a
nice addition, but devoting more time to instruction in the dance
tent would mean less time for open dancing. For me, most of the best
moments of the festival happen in that tent where the dancers and the
bands are right up close. I don't know if I would be willing to give
up any of that dance time.

The musical highpoint of the fest came Sunday night in the tent, as
Susan Tedeschi's set on the main stage was winding down. Leroy Thomas
and his new band of Zydeco Roadrunners played an absolutely
incendiary set that capped an already excellent festival experience.
The band pumped out a series of relentless grooves while Leroy did
his acrobatic accordion thing -- dancing and jumping around the stage
like a man possessed. Other great moments: Marcia Ball on the main
stage, relaxed yet smokin' at the same time, and Donna the Buffalo
singing 'Positive Friction' on the main stage late in the afternoon.
When they sing the lines about 'what does all this Hollywood really
have to do with us?' and 'there's a family growing, I've seen it with
my own two eyes', and you look over the crowd of thousands grooving
along, it's almost possible to believe again (if only for that
moment) that music might really save the world.

Actually, this is one festival that does encourage feedback (whether
or not they act upon that feedback is another questions). Only upon
reading the festival brochure when I got home, did I notice that they
mentioned a survey form available at the information booth. You made
some good comments. May I add to list of improvements (suggestions
I've made for the last two years):

1. Cordon off with waist-high stakes and caution tape a few aisles
from the grass onto the main stage dance floor with signs
saying "FIRE LANE, NO CHAIRS", so the dancers aren't tripping over
chairs to get on and off the floor.

2. Solicit and procure a legitimate, licensed masseur/masseuse to
work a booth at the festival, like they used to do at Escoheag. The
magnet-treatment booth was interesting (and even relaxing), but it
wasn't like having a massage -- and, although their sales pitch was
low-key, they were trying to sell you stuff.

Yes, the sound was great!

I think I will pass along my comments (and others posted here if
folks don't mind) to the festival promoters through their web site
(www.rhythmandroots.com).

GregB, you are so right about the bouncing dance floor in the dance tent. It
was almost as though I could stand in one place and the rhythm of the dance

move with the floor. Talk about feeling the pulse of the music - whew!

I'm passing this on for Jane. Hey Gary, how about a blurb for Ardenwood in
your newsletter. September 29th, Newark, California. Jane would probably
have more details.

Hi Dwight,
Could you please forward a message to your mailing list that I am
looking for some volunteers on September 15th for the West Coast Music
Festival in San Pablo. Robert and I will be setting up the booth at
9:30am. The event runs til 10 P.M., but the Flames and Gator Beat end at
5:00, so we can break down at that time.
Also- do you think it would be a good idea to put an ad for Ardenwood in
Gary Hayman's on-line newsletter?

Please address all return e-mails to my home: janeresnick@....

Thanks,

Interesting what you said about the lessons, I agree completely that
the basic lesson is the most important and get the folks moving and
enjoying the music as soon as possible. The instructor did teach an
intermediate step which was nice for a little variation. The band
did a great job of slowing the tempo down reeeaallly slooooow.

I still think a festival can rent some table, chairs and a few
umbrellas for there sun soaked customers as I had no room left in my
luggage after bringing everything but the kitchen sink ;) They did
have some picnic tables out which helped.

I second what Bonnie mentioned as well about having a non-chair area
going up to the stage would be good :)

Later,
Greg

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to get in my two and a half cents in on Ninigret. I had a
great time and the dance floor in the Bud Light dance tent was fun (except
when kids jumped out of time to the music next to you while trying to
dance...led to bopping out of control...<laugh>. A very special friend of
mine designed and built that fun floor (Eric Fahey) and it certainly helped
with fatigue.
I loved all the music at the Ninigret festival...just wished I could have
been at them all for the full duration. The best Zydeco happened right at my
encampment I believe ... we had quite a few headliners show up to Jam for
approximately 250 enthusiastic Zydeco fans...all in the intimate covered
area, complete with small dance floor. I would personally like to thank
Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners, Chris Ardoin and Double Clutchin',
Robert Graves Leonard and Slippery Sneakers, and all the Musicians present
that evening both professional and amateur alike who made Saturday night at
Ninigret the most Awesome and exhilarating time I had there. The music was
wonderful...and June ...yea you right, we should have had recording
equipment, it was that awesome. Next year we plan to have more dancing space
and more covered space...it keeps getting bigger and better.
Hope many of you out there were able to experience it with us. Maybe
we'll even catch a dance or two next year.

Well, I didn't think anything could top last year's jam, but Saturday
surely did! Not only was the music INCREDIBLE, but the dance floor
right next to the jam tent was the icing on the cake (pardon the
hackneyed cliche). I couldn't stop talking about it on Sunday. A
full moon, a clear, starlit night, live music, dance floor AND - most
important - dance PARTNERS!! I second the thank-yous to all the
musicians who played, professionals and amateurs, and to Eric and the
other hosts/hostesses. A night to remember.

Well, too bad. Because you would have sounded excellent had you been him.
;-) However, keep playing those feet. As Billie sometimes says from the
stage "Without you folks, this would be band practice."

Billie Wilson plays with Motordude Zydeco, an SF Bay Area band. I hadn't
heard them in a while until last weekend, and he has become a monster on
that Piano Accordion.

Yes. He passed away late Wednesday. He got his start here in Jackson cooking for
Mississippi Educational Television. There was a tribute to him on last night's
local news.

True, Billy is a great accordion player, an institution around these
parts. He is a monster also on the lap steel guitar, and I'll take
this opportunity to mention that he'll be playing with me, Marty
Jara, Elaine Herrick and David Hymowitz today at the Solano Stroll in
Berkeley/Albany, CA.

It's the fourth or so year that Frog Legs has played the Stroll. I
invite Bay Area readers to come out and do some dancing in the
streets. We're about half way up the Ave., in front of the CA Bank
and Trust--Santa Fe Ave is the cross street.

I recommend three excellent resources for Cajun music and lyrics. You
will find all of these songs using these sources. Two are books and
one is a website. The advantage of the two books is that they provide
the lyrics in Cajun-French along with the English translation. The
website provides lyrics in Cajun-French but does not give the English
translation. The two books are:

1. Yé Yaille Chère-Traditional Cajun Dance Music
by Raymond E. Francois.

This book is one of the most comprehensive collections of authentic
Cajun sheet music and lyrics from southwest Louisiana. Sheet music
also contains turns, chord changes as well as cross-references to
other songs, and reminiscences by Cajun musicians with extensive
notes. Truly the "Encyclopedia of Cajun Music". A unique treasury of
words and sheet music to 247 traditional and original Cajun songs.

Available online at Floyd's Record Shop:

http://www.floydsrecordshop.com/osb2/itemdetails.cfm?ID=398

2. Cajun Music: A Reflection of A People. Volume 1. By Ann Allen
Savoy.

Includes: 106 Cajun and Zydeco songs in Cajun and Creole French,
accompanied with simple phonetics for English speakers, and English
translations.

Cajun instrument instructions, How to Play Cajun
Fiddle, Accordion, Guitar, Guitar chords, etc. And
much more - interviews in French to demonstrate the Cajun language,
discographies, lists of how and where to find Cajun records.

Available online from Savoy Music Center (locate and click on
the "Cajun Books" link at the bottom of the homepage:

http://www.savoymusiccenter.com

A third recomendation is a website titled, "QUELQUES CHANSONS CAJUNS"
(Lyrics are in Cajun French; no English translation.)

http://membres.tripod.fr/breric/cajun.htm

Hope this helps,
