Carlene Carter Arrested Near Nashville
Singer-songwriter Carlene Carter is free on $5,000 bond after being
arrested Thursday (Dec. 12) near Nashville on two charges of identity
theft. Carter, 47, is accused of using the identity of a former
boyfriend to fill two prescriptions for Zoloft, an anti-depressant.
Authorities say she used the numbers on an existing medicine bottle
when she phoned a Hendersonville, Tenn., pharmacy to have the
prescription filled in the name of Francis Reidy III. Reidy was
killed in an automobile accident a few weeks before Carter allegedly
attempted to fill the prescription.
Carter is the daughter of June Carter and country singer Carl Smith --
and the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash. She was arrested in New Mexico
in June 2001 after police found three grams of black-tar heroin and
drug paraphernalia in a stolen SUV she was driving. In September, she
performed in Nashville with her mother and stepfather when Cash
received the Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award at the Americana
Music Association awards show.
