From the Richmond Times-Dispatch, on the one-year anniversary of the
death of Johnny Cash:
Part of the Carter Family future hinges upon the future of Carlene
Carter, June Carter Cash's daughter with first husband Carl Smith.
Stricken by a string of personal tragedies in recent years, she has
laid low to gather order in her life.
Maybe Carter will come full circle and return to music. Her cousin
and Anita Carter's daughter, Lorrie Bennett, thinks she might.
"Carlene is on hold right now, and we would love to get her going,"
Bennett said. "She's under a microscope. I want her to have the
desire to get out there and do that."
Meanwhile, Bennett's role in carrying on the Carter Family name
appears a go. With family members Jerry Hensley and Dale Jett,
Bennett plans to record a batch of Carter Family songs at Tom T.
Hall's studio.
"Back to the basics is what we want to do. We would love to have
Carlene along, too," Bennett said. "We [Bennett, John Carter Cash and
wife Laura, and Carlene Carter] did Jonesboro Days [in Jonesboro,
Tenn., in May] and had a blast. Then we did the Carter Fold. It was
like going home. It is home."
