Carter, Shaver, Snider Perform Songs Admired by Tom T. Hall

Carlene Carter, Billy Joe Shaver and Todd Snider were among the singer-songwriters performing songs handpicked by Tom T. Hall at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday night (Aug. 10). Carter and cousin Lorrie Bennett Davis sang "Keep on the Sunny Side" and "Me and the Wildwood Rose," Shaver sang three of his own songs before dueting with Hall on "Old Five and Dimers," and Snider performed Hall's "Fallen Woman" and Kris Kristofferson's "To Beat the Devil." Additional musicians offered modern favorites like "When I Close My Eyes," "Who Needs Pictures" and "The Little Girl." Hall, the museum's artist-in-residence this year, sang "Busted" in tribute to his late friend, songwriter Harlan Howard.

Last Wednesday at the Country Music Hall of Fame's Artist in Residence show (#2), when Tom T. Hall's wife, Miss Dixie, introduced Carlene Carter and her cousin Lori, she commented something to the effect of getting cold chills when she saw Carlene "come out as June" (in the Wildwood Flowers film) After hearing and seeing Ms Carter, I can pretty well understand why Dixie felt that way...it was sort of eerie....

Never really having "kept up" with lives of country music folk (with exception of Tom T, Waylon, Don Williams & Johnny Rodriguez) I'd never heard of Carlene and didn't know too much about the Carter/Cash family---always knew of course, of The Man In Black and his great music---and his great love for June. I remember seeing her in that Jackson duet with Mr C and also in a small part in the remake of Stagecoach many years ago with Johnny, Willie, Waylon and Kris (the Highwaymen).

In view of my not being totally familiar with June's voice and appearance, perhaps it's not logical that I thought how amazingly Carlene looked and sounded like her mom...but I was definitely blown away by her talent...so forget logical...it was magical!

That's the reason I joined the group here....to learn a little about Carlene and possibly start on a collection of her recordings. Reading back to the first messages, it was sad to realize how rocky her life's been for some years---but she sure seemed to have it together last week, so to restate everyone's feeling, I hope she'll be able to keep out of that dark pit for good this time.

I got quite a few photos last week (including some of Carlene) but just haven't had time yet to really review them and up/download anything.  May take awhile longer, too, because tomorrow afternoon I'm headed back to Nashville for the 3rd TTH show but will try to eventually share any pics of her here.

Regards to all~~

Jan (the geriatric groupie)

Thanks for the welcome, Cat. I really love "Too Proud" too. I think Carlene plays piano beautifully on it, as she does on "I Once Knew Love" from her first...
