I wish I did have it. I have a question for her. Ask if they might possibly find a way to take the show Wildwood Flower on the road?? I didn't get to see it but heard it was wonderful and she does June perfectly??
Thanks,
Cat

Subject: [carlenecarter] Carlene Blender story/interview questions

Hello --
Hope this e-mail finds everyone well.
Sorry to be a bug but does anyone have a copy of
the Carlene story that was published in the April 2003
issue of BLENDER magazine (Eminem cover).

Reason I ask is I've got an interview scheduled with
Carlene next Wednesday, Dec. 20th...and would like
to re-read the BLENDER story as I prepare.  I bought
the issue when it came out but have no idea where it is.

If anyone knows where I can find it online or if you
have a scanned version you can e-mail me, I would
greatly appreciate it.
(I e-mailed BLENDER but haven't heard anything back.)

Also...If anyone has any ideas for questions that they'd
like me to ask Carlene, please let me know.

Thank you for your time, consideration and assistance.

Hope that everyone has a wonderful, whimsical weekend.

Appreciatively yours,

Doug Gordon

A friend and I did a joint interview with Carlene in ''93 and it was one of the best interviews I've ever done because my friend all the right country related questions and I asked all the rock related questions.  Then we left and my friend realized that he has forgotten to turn the tape recorder on.

Cheers,
Mike

The remaining two Carlene Carter albums from the LP era never issues
on CD are about to come out. On Oct. 25, Wounded Bird CDs, a reissue
label that seems to specialize in 1970s country/rock, will reissue
the following 2-on-1 CDs:

Carlene Carter (1978) / Blue Nun (1981)
Two Sides to Every Woman (1979) / Musical Shapes (1980)

It's a bummer that they didn't pair "Carlene Carter" and "Two Sides"
on one CD. That would be chronologically correct. It would also help
out those of us who have the "Blue Nun"/"Musical Shapes" reissue from
a few years ago. That reissue contained bonus tracks, which the
Wounded Bird set will not, which means you'll have to add to your
CDs, rather than replace them.

Order details are available from Amazon.com -- do a search
for "Carlene Carter". Undoubtedly, other online stores will have
these as well.

Also, for what it's worth, the following week New West is issuing on
CD and DVD Johnny Cash's appearance on Austin City Limits from many
years ago.

And, finally, mark Sept. 26 on your calendars -- that's the day Carlene Carter
turns 50!

Thanks for the welcome, Cat.  I really love "Too Proud" too.  I think Carlene plays piano beautifully on it, as she does on "I Once Knew Love" from her first album.  I wish she would do more of it.

Carter, Shaver, Snider Perform Songs Admired by Tom T. Hall

Carlene Carter, Billy Joe Shaver and Todd Snider were among the singer-songwriters performing songs handpicked by Tom T. Hall at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday night (Aug. 10). Carter and cousin Lorrie Bennett Davis sang "Keep on the Sunny Side" and "Me and the Wildwood Rose," Shaver sang three of his own songs before dueting with Hall on "Old Five and Dimers," and Snider performed Hall's "Fallen Woman" and Kris Kristofferson's "To Beat the Devil." Additional musicians offered modern favorites like "When I Close My Eyes," "Who Needs Pictures" and "The Little Girl." Hall, the museum's artist-in-residence this year, sang "Busted" in tribute to his late friend, songwriter Harlan Howard.

******************

Last Wednesday at the Country Music Hall of Fame's Artist in Residence show (#2), when Tom T. Hall's wife, Miss Dixie, introduced Carlene Carter and her cousin Lori, she commented something to the effect of getting cold chills when she saw Carlene "come out as June" (in the Wildwood Flowers film) After hearing and seeing Ms Carter, I can pretty well understand why Dixie felt that way...it was sort of eerie....

Never really having "kept up" with lives of country music folk (with exception of Tom T, Waylon, Don Williams & Johnny Rodriguez) I'd never heard of Carlene and didn't know too much about the Carter/Cash family---always knew of course, of The Man In Black and his great music---and his great love for June. I remember seeing her in that Jackson duet with Mr C and also in a small part in the remake of Stagecoach many years ago with Johnny, Willie, Waylon and Kris (the Highwaymen).

In view of my not being totally familiar with June's voice and appearance, perhaps it's not logical that I thought how amazingly Carlene looked and sounded like her mom...but I was definitely blown away by her talent...so forget logical...it was magical!

That's the reason I joined the group here....to learn a little about Carlene and possibly start on a collection of her recordings. Reading back to the first messages, it was sad to realize how rocky her life's been for some years---but she sure seemed to have it together last week, so to restate everyone's feeling, I hope she'll be able to keep out of that dark pit for good this time.

I got quite a few photos last week (including some of Carlene) but just haven't had time yet to really review them and up/download anything.  May take awhile longer, too, because tomorrow afternoon I'm headed back to Nashville for the 3rd TTH show but will try to eventually share any pics of her here.

Regards to all~~

Jan (the geriatric groupie)

Hi Carlene Carter fans!  I just joined your group, and wanted to say "Hello" to everyone.

I've been a fan of Carlene and her music since about 1979.  I saw her perform on one of those late night concert shows that used to be on network tv in the 70's; "Midnight Special", or "Don Kirchner's Rock Concert".  I forget which one.  Anyway, she was performing songs from her then new album, TWO SIDES TO EVERY WOMAN.  I thought she was terrific.  I went out and bought the album, as well as her first, and I've loved her ever since.

MUSICAL SHAPES is still my favorite CC album-- Wow! What a GREAT record!  But I have all the ones that have followed since, and love them all.

So happy to hear that Carlene is clean and sober again, working on stage in a tribute to her illustrious family, and hoping to record again.  I sure hope so, too!!!

Best to Carlene!!  And to all of you!

Good news that she did the Opry again. I have meet CC a few times and been in
her home in Madison. We were neighbors. She is very down to earth. "What you see
is what you get" with her...I just hope this clean/sober CC gets it back
together for good this time and gives us the great music in her soul again.
Thanks for this update.

Hi Carlene Fans,

We just got back from a quick weekend trip to Nashville.  Remember
that first website I built: The Hunt for Carlene Carter?  Well, I
got wind that she was doing the show in Nashville til the end of
this month, and we went down to see it.  I actually saw (and heard)
her on stage.  I came this close (fingers close together) to meeting
her.  She had to run away after the show though and could not come
out to sign autographs for her fans.  I did meet the producer of her
show, and I asked her to give Carlene a gift from me.  It was a
bumper sticker showing her picture and the name of my website.  I
hope she got a laugh out of it.  I wasn't allowed to take pictures
at Carlene's show, but we did see her sing also at the Grand Ole
Opry, and I did snap 3 pictures of her on stage there.  I will post
these on my site once I get the film developed.

Carlene did sound and look great.  She colored her hair brown to
look more like her mother June for the show.  I hope she colors it
back to blonde before her next tour.  The show was fun and amusing.
Carlene has put a lot of work into learning her part, and she
talked, acted, and sang as beautifully as ever.   Kudos!!!

Is Carlene going to record another album? The producer did not
discard the rumors---so the hope is still there.

Please keep those updates coming folks. My dream to meet Carlene
continues. My dream to hear her sing (and act) has finally come true.

Carlene Carter says it'll be tough to play her mom - the late June
Carter Cash - in a biographical musical called Wildwood Flowers: The
June Carter Story.

"It's really hard to step into my mother's shoes, but I'm going to
try to at least wear one of her hats," Carlene said yesterday, after
singing three songs with cousin Lorrie Davis Bennett at the Country
Music Hall of Fame's Ford Theater.

Lorrie will portray her own mother, June's sister Anita Carter, in
the production. Angela Bennett (no relation to Lorrie) is the
executive producer of the show, which runs from July 12-31 at the
BellSouth Acuff Theatre.

Carlene plans to revive some of her mom's famous comedy routines and
facial expressions. At the Hall, she imitated June's ability to cross
her eyes.

"I was going to do a cartwheel in the show, but I tried one the other
day and just about broke my hip. I'm going to stick to the
eye-crossing."

The show will debut in Nashville, Tennessee next month (JUL05) before

Well, honestly Patti, CC has had a few good break. In about 1990-92 she was going up, but her addictions keep pulling her down.

I like CC a lot, she is a great artist and I actually know her and some of her family. But, it seems that every time she starts doing well, she has to hit a new bottom. The woman needs to take her recovery SERIOUSLY then the industry might talk to her, but no one in the business is going to spend money on someone who is all messed up on drugs or alcohol.

She shoots herself in the foot. I wish she could get it together so much, I listen to a CD in my car and put "TOO PROUD" on so loud that it shakes my window. Anyone who can write a song like that deserves to be out there sharing it with the universe.

I pray that some day she gets the message, before it is too late for her.

Johnny Cash

In commemoration of two music icons, fans of both Johnny Cash and his
wife June Carter Cash will be able to purchase multi-disc specials
from both of the singers. Columbia will release sets of CD's from
Johnny and June on June 7 featuring rarities, photos and hits.

Johnny's release will be entitled Johnny Cash —The Legend. It's a
four-disc set with a whopping 107 songs. The track listing will span
Cash's career from 1955 to 2002 and will include songs from all of the
albums he recorded for the Sun and Columbia record labels. Seven
previously unreleased tracks will be included.

According to Billboard, one of the unreleased songs is called "It

Joe Carter, of Famous Country Family, Dies

03/03/2005 11:52 PM, AP

Joe Carter, a member of the famous Carter Family of music, died of
cancer Wednesday at his home. He was 78.

Carter was a cornerstone of the preservation of old-time mountain
music and helped build the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Va., which
presented shows of country and bluegrass music every weekend.

"We had been anticipating and trying to get ourselves ready for
this, but it still hurts to give him up," Carter Fold executive and
Carter's niece, Rita Forrester, told the Kingsport Times-News. "They
broke the mold when they made my Uncle Joe."

Carter was 5 months old when he traveled with his parents, A.P. and
Sara Carter, from Maces Springs to Bristol in 1927 for a recording
session that has been called "the big bang of country music." It
launched the careers of A.P., Sara and her cousin Maybelle Carter as
the Carter Family trio.

Joe Carter, who performed at the Carter Family Fold, was the last
direct connection to anyone who was at that original session, his
friend Tim White said Thursday.

Marty Stuart, Tom T. Hall and John Carter Cash, son of Johnny and
June Carter Cash, are listed among the pallbearers for Carter's
funeral Sunday. June Carter Cash was Maybelle Cash's daughter

From the CMT web site:

Singer Goldie Hill, the wife of Country Music Hall of Fame member
Carl Smith, died Thursday night (Feb. 24) in Nashville's Baptist
Hospital of complications from cancer. She was 72.

Born Jan. 11, 1933, in Coy City, Texas, Argolda Voncile Hill began
singing with her brothers, Tommy and Ken Hill, while she was in her
teens. In 1952, she and Tommy joined Webb Pierce's band and began
performing with him on the Louisiana Hayride on radio station KWKH in
Shreveport.

When Pierce journeyed to Nashville to record in 1952, Hill went along
with him. While there, she auditioned for Pierce's label, Decca
Records, and was signed immediately. She was soon dubbed "The Golden
Hillbilly." Hill's first single was "Why Talk to My Heart,"
an "answer song" to the Ray Price hit, "Talk to Your Heart." It
failed to chart.

In 1953, however, Hill went No. 1 for three weeks with "I Let the
Stars Get in My Eyes," an answer to Slim Willet's wildly
popular "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes." The answer song was
written by her brother Tommy, who also wrote Pierce's big 1954
hit, "Slowly."

Hill never duplicated the success of her first hit. In 1954, she
teamed with Justin Tubb for the single "Looking Back to See" (written
by Maxine Brown of the Browns). It peaked at No. 4. Over the next
five years, Hill charted only thee times, once with Tubb ("Sure Fire
Kisses") and twice with Red Sovine ("Are You Mine," "Yankee Go Home").

On Sept. 19, 1957, Hill married Carl Smith and retired from show
business. She resumed recording in 1968 for Epic Records. Although
she cut two albums for Epic, only one single made the
charts. "Lovable Fool," released under the name Goldie Hill Smith,
reached the No. 73 spot, but she never charted after that.

Billboard.com's web site describes two new box sets coming out in
June, one of Johnny Cash recordings, the other of June Carter. And I
quote:

"The Legend" will span four discs and 107 Cash tracks, covering 1955-
2002 and all of the Man in Black's major recordings for the Sun and
Columbia labels. Seven of the included tracks are previously
unreleased, including "It Takes One To Know Me." That track was
written by his wife's daughter, Carlene Carter, as a teenager, and
recorded in 1977. Carter recently added vocals to the recording that
appears here.

Well out of the blue I heard some very encouraging news today , I
don't want to go into details (it maybe on the QT so I don't know if
I should) but from what I was told Carlene is really looking forward
to start working on Music again & she's also looking after her health
as well which for me is even better , all's I can say is it was the
happiest news I've heard come out of a phone in a long time,
Cheers & Good luck CC!

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch, on the one-year anniversary of the
death of Johnny Cash:

Part of the Carter Family future hinges upon the future of Carlene
Carter, June Carter Cash's daughter with first husband Carl Smith.
Stricken by a string of personal tragedies in recent years, she has
laid low to gather order in her life.

Maybe Carter will come full circle and return to music. Her cousin
and Anita Carter's daughter, Lorrie Bennett, thinks she might.

"Carlene is on hold right now, and we would love to get her going,"
Bennett said. "She's under a microscope. I want her to have the
desire to get out there and do that."

Meanwhile, Bennett's role in carrying on the Carter Family name
appears a go. With family members Jerry Hensley and Dale Jett,
Bennett plans to record a batch of Carter Family songs at Tom T.
Hall's studio.

"Back to the basics is what we want to do. We would love to have
Carlene along, too," Bennett said. "We [Bennett, John Carter Cash and
wife Laura, and Carlene Carter] did Jonesboro Days [in Jonesboro,
Tenn., in May] and had a blast. Then we did the Carter Fold. It was
like going home. It is home."

i saw the paper in the convenience store on friday and it is carlene
on the cover. i paged through the paper but didn't get the whole of
the story, just that she has been arrested again for (i think it
was)drugs. if i get a chance, i'll take another look today when i go
to work.

i sure wish she could rise out of the pit she seemed to be stuck in
and be healthy and working again. it's such a shame to see this
happening to her. she sure hasn't been getting any breaks lately.

i guess we just have to hope for the best.
