Hello Ben, and List. I don't know where or when I first heard a band organ
live, but in the San Francisco, CA area where I was born and used to live,
there were several carousels with band organs, and when I was a child
(1950s) I probably heard (and loved) them all! I remember particularly
enjoying the large carousel at Playland-at-the-Beach in San Francisco, as
they had SEVERAL organs on ONE carousel! One never knew which would be
running at any given time. As a teenager, when my older brother worked at
Playland, I used to go late at night when there were few riders, and the
operator would allow me to choose which organ I wanted to hear. Lord, I
miss those days...
";-)
Sadly, Playland was torn down in the late 60s, and is now an apartment
complex. I don't know what became of the carousel or its organs. I DO
know where the machine shop from the Playland maintenance building
went. My older brother bought it...
Thanks for letting me reminisce!
