Hey all,

Thank you for you St. Patrick's Day help! I disappeared after getting sick. But I'm well and looking to the future.

In fact, the next big promotion I hope to do is for the PodCastAwards. I'm hoping to say "The Award-Winning Irish & Celtic Music Podcast" come later this year with your help. Starting July 1, the Podcast Awards open up. I don't know how it works at present. But what I do know is that July 1st they open up nominations. Then a couple weeks later, they open up voting. To be nominated, I think you need to vote daily.... but I"m not yet certain. http://www.podcastawards.com/ . Hopefully, I'll know more closer to the date.

This July show will also mark the 3-year anniversary of the show. So with those two combined, I want to do three mini-shows per week for the entire month. And of course, I would like your help getting the word out about the podcast. If you have theme ideas for the mini-shows, let me know. I was thinking bagpipes, fiddles, drinking songs, original songwriting, flutes, gaelic language, celtic rock, reels, jigs, ballads. Those are a few ideas. And I'd welcome yours as well.

Finally, I joined a site called ReverbNation at http://www.reverbnation.com/marcgunn . I'm not yet sure I can setup a separate site for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, but I'm thinking about looking into it. If not, and for now at least, I'm gonna use my site to run some street team promotions, because it's well-setup for that goal.

Alrighty, let's kick in a Celtic Summer Extravaganza!  Ohh... Hmm... We need a good name... Maybe it's time to revive the free Celtic CD giveaway too...?

Hi Marc & all,

Here is the list of groups and performers I sent request to yesterday and today.  I am not sure who will send material to Marc.  Maybe if he gets enough material he can have two podcasts like last year ;-)

These groups and performers are ones I either met at fairs/events or have contact through the Internet and mutual friends.  Since I play the bagpipes it opens a big door.  Some of the local (to me) people are starting out and I hope they do submit some music.

Some of the groups have been featured in one or more of Marc's podcasts.  I meet Merry Mischief last year at the Silver Kingdom Fair where I was performing as a living history Viking and we sang Loch Lomond together.  This was and is one of my most cherished memories with a very favorite song.  Maybe someday I'll get the chance to sing with Marc ;-)  I met David Irish at the NH Ren Fair several years ago and almost purchased some medieval bagpipes from him (might still do so if I can find the funds).  I have talked with David and told him about Marc and encouraged him to send some music so one of his bands might get a larger audience.

These are all in my personal "friends" list on my space account (dougsaball).  Next week I am thinking about sending out a bulletin requesting songs too.  In essence it would be a second email.

Chris have you contacted any other groups not on Marc's first List?  Post your comments here so we can all work together.

I'm here to help when I have the time.  Now I am off to a few meetings then home until next Tuesday.  My home connection is dial-up and I have to battle with the rest of the family for computer time...

Catch you latter,

Question: what were you thinking about for a promotional, just a
review like your CDs or a HTML with hyperlinks etc.

There's a few simple things that can regularly be done.

1. Add a link in your signature with every message board or email post.
2. Post a daily or every other daily blog saying, "I contacted... for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast" with a link to the podcast.
3. A review of each show as it happens.
4. Cross-post the shows to relevant music forums. I like to send mine (and forget frequently) to the CelticCafe yahoogroup.
5. Drop by myspace pages of the bands in the podcast and tell them they were featured on the latest ICMP with a link.
6. Post a link or cross-post the entire show in your blog.
7. Contact Celtic bands that you enjoy and tell them how much you'd like to hear them on the podcast.

In addition, start looking at St. Patrick's Day events, blogs and websites.

1. If I can get the press release together, send it off to newspapers/magazines in your area. Link it to the upcoming St. Patrick's Day episode.
2. There's a lot of general blogs looking for news and info for St. Pat's. Send them an email and let them know that there's the ICMP will have a St. Patrick's Day special podcast BEFORE St. Pat's. Like BoingBoing, or something like that, or Fark.com.
3. Digg It.

Ultimately, think passively. No need to be in people's faces. Stick to your blogs and sphere of influence.

Thanks for the heads up about both issues.  However, I wonder if the groups would be more incline to send Marc some music if several fans email them, any thoughts?

Yes. Many groups are more inclined. But it's better to separate it over time. And make it sound like a fan asking. It's all in the phrasing. Like when I'm asking ya'll to send out a message, you can say, "Marc was asking for some great Celtic music, and someone suggested your name. I'd love to hear you in the podcast." Or something like that such that they get the idea that it is a fan interested. But I've found that when a bunch of people do it all at once, it gets annoying.

Now is there anyone on the list who is willing to write up some promotional press releases?

I have someone who said she can put one together. So I'll see what I can do. Ultimately, I'd like someone who will really take charge of it. though. Might even be good to put out on with every show or so. I have to think about that though.

OK Marc,

Sorry for my last post - sometimes it takes a while for the servers to
warm up around here (3+ feet of snow & some freezing rain - ha, ha).

I'll wait for your new list and contact who I can when I have time.

BTW, if you remember I wrote you that I used to promote the bands I
was in back in the 1970's, and attempted to get KRAUKA the Danish Folk
band here in Maine last year. No success on that but I have some
ground work for future events with contact at theaters, etc.

I find this a great opportunity to bring my old stuff into the new age
of computers etc.

Question: what were you thinking about for a promotional, just a
review like your CDs or a HTML with hyperlinks etc.

Hey Doug,

that was my same thought with us both contacting them.  I think if there are several people contacting them that it would be of benefit..  That is just my opinion.  If I could write well I would help with the press releases,  but I leave that one to someone else.. lol

Hi Chris, I did too - through My Space.  I also contacted Bad Haggis, but have not got a reply yet.  I'll be sending out more emails of the groups on Marc's list as time permits.

Just wanted to let the members of the group know that I am contacting
some bands for the promotion as well. It is my understanding that
others are doing it as well. So it would be great if we can
coordinate our efforts through this group.

Well, the big St. Patrick's Day holiday rapidly approaching, and I'm
feeling the pinch with too many things to do. So I want to ask for
some assistance in a few areas.

FIRST, I need someone (or a few someones) to contact artists. There
are a LOT of bands who are still unaware of the Irish & Celtic Music
Podcast and the Celtic MP3s Music Magazine.

I want to setup a message board somewhere, specifically for promoting
stuff. Prolly looking at doing it on the Song Henge website. Though
for now, I'll just use this site.

So if you could list 5-10 bands who you will contact for the Irish &
Celtic Music Podcast, and ask them to submit at
http://www.celticmp3s.com/submit/ , that'd be a great start.

Here are some bands that need contacting:
- Needfire
- THE SALTY DOGS, http://www.saltydog.ca/flash/main.html
- Green Man
- Switchback
- Ancient Hype
- Bad Haggis
- Enter The Haggis (not sure if they have new material)
- Great Big Sea (never have received permission from them
- Dropkick Murphys
- Linda Rutherford & Celtic Fire
- Urban Trad (www.urbandtrad.com)
- Alan Stivell, www.alan-stivell.com
- Liz Carroll
- Brendan Bulger of The Sprigs
- Gan Bua
- Chris Bain of Gan Bua
- Barra MacNeils
- Jerry Holland, Cape Breton
- Sandy McIntyre, Cape Breton.
- Winston Scotty Fitzgerald
- The Rankin Family
- Slainte Mhath
- Leahy
- Ashely MacIsaac
- Corquieu, from Asturias,
- Carlos Nunez, from Gallicia!
- Breizh
- Shenaniganz from New-Zealand

Remember if they have a record label, we will need permission from
them as well to be played on the podcast.

SECOND, I need a couple press releases. Anyone know how to write
those? Basically, one to promote the St Patrick's Day podcast and the
Celtic MP3s Music Magazine. You can read past editions of the magazine
at
http://ezinedirector.com/admin/publisher/archive/public?fuseaction=a&e=7947555E0\
046067845
for reference for the magazine and read up on it at
http://www.celticmp3s.com/

The highlight of the podcast is the "17 Free Celtic Music Downloads
for St. Patrick's Day", a special article and feature from Song Henge
that will give away MP3s. I think this this is like my fifth or sixth
year doing it. They'll be able to download those at
http://www.songhenge.com/

I'd also like you to send the press release out to Celtic
organizations and radio shows. You'll need to find a list to send it
to once it's done.

That's all my scattered brain can come up with right now, but I would
REALLY LOVE your help. As much as you can do!

Please let me know.
Slainte,
Marc

Make sure your friends know that they DO NOT have to own an Ipod or
other device to use iTunes to download the podcast and listen the
programs. They can sit and enjoy them right from their computer where
ever they may be at the time or they can burn the podcasts to a CD and
listen to them while they are traveling. A lot of people really and
truly believe that you have to have an Ipod to utilize iTunes. So
tell them that is INCORRECT! Give them the direct link to the podcast
or better yet.. Go to http://www.celticmusicpodcast.com/banners.shtml
grab one of the banners and post it on EVERYTHING that you have
whether that be Myspace, Facebook, Fubar, LiveJournal, Myyearbook, and
whatever else you may use. Post those Banners! Make sure you post
bulletins about the podcast at least WEEKLY, preferably everytime you
get online. Start a list on your Yahoo Messenger (or whatever IM
program you use) for Celtic Music Fans and send out MASS messages when
a new podcast is posted. These are just some things that come to mind
right off.. There are plenty of other things you can do to promote the
podcast.

- Weekly blogging about bands or songs in the podcasts.
- Organizing groups of people to do the blogging and forum posting.
- Burning CDs of shows and playing them at pubs, events on St. Patrick's Day.

Most news works best on a timely fashion. Meaning, this is new, therefore, this is cool and people be interested in hearing more about it. So knowing that there is a new podcast is a great way to share info. But even better is to tell people a bit about the cool bands. And I think that would be the goal of the promo group. To hype the bands in the podcast. Say, "The new Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is out, and wow! Just heard a cool song by Patrick's Head. That's by far my favorite in the podcast. It's 'Black Is the Color', but I LOVE the way they do it."

Get my drift?

I am, at someone's request, putting together cafepress t-shirts, and would like to come up with a similiarly cool idea for stickers as the bads one.
