It is now 50 years since Charlie Parker passed away... Or Bird Lives as the
graffiti declared To commemorate there is a tribute on the BBC Radio 3 Jazz
Legends programme. Listen here on Real Audio:

Along with the standard studio sessions, there are samples of the private
recordings of Parker. For example, the Bob Redcross sessions of Parker
playing in a hotel room with Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Pettiford, or
aircheck recordings - recordings for radio broadcast usually made on larger
acetates with longer recording times, up to 15 minutes, than the standard 78
of the period (which restricted recorded tunes to under 4 minutes) - from
the Savoy ballroom, an early piece with Jimmy McShann, and one of the longer
recordings by Dean Benedetti. It is good to listen to this music and there
are some nice comments by Brain Priestly on the material as well. Priestley
also states that he has a new book coming out soon on Charlie Parker, that
is something to look forward too, judging by his comments here.
