Hi All,

New member here, I am hoping one of you can answer a question for me. First let
nme
say I have been loved listening to the blues and have enjoyed Charlie's music
for years. I
use to live in Berkeley and was a junior camp counsler at a funky little camp
called "Mujji
Ubu" this is where i came to know "little Charlie" aside from having him in my
charge I
also started babysitting for him. His father of course was Charlie Musselwhite.
I still have
the album he gave me when it first came out "Takin' My Time" with little Charlie
on his lap.
Needless to say I moved to the East Coast to finish HS and have often wondered
how he
was. Does anyone know how he is? I never see a mention of him on any Bio's
etc.

Thanks,

Sue

Charlie Musselwhite is back with a new album, 'Delta Hardware,' set
for release May 16 on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records!

special autographed copy while supplies last. Click here to order.

Delta Hardware

Charlie returns to his Mississippi-by-way-of-Southside Chicago roots,
in songs that capture the raw emotion of electrified blues at its
best on 'Delta Hardware.' Charlie incorporates all his experiences -
from his days with Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to recent musical
friendships with Ben Harper and Tom Waits - into this new batch of
powerful, hard-rocking tunes.

Pulled out of the storied Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, 'Delta
Hardware' is a mixture of songs written over the past few years and
ideas fleshed out i! n the studio, including a new twist on the
longtime live staple "Clarksdale Boogie." The album ranges from
upbeat jewels like the party track "Church Is Out" to more socially
conscious songs like "Black Water" and "The Invisible Ones" -
inspired by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, with Charlie
painting a stark, honest tribute to those suffering in and around New
Orleans and in his home state.

Brad Kava of the San Jose Mercury News writes that "Delta Hardware
sounds like the second coming of Led Zeppelin, with Tom Waits on
vocals."

new album here.

Hello,
As a new member, I just thought I'd introduce myself.
My name is Brad. I'm treas/web for the South Skunk Blues Society in
central Iowa. We are a small group. But am planning our 14th annual
blues fest on July 15, 2006.
I've been a fan since the late 60's.
Had the opprtunity to chat with Charlie many times when he used to
play the Saloon in S.F. Was a Ca. resident for almost 30 years. But
relocated to Iowa several years ago. I was amazed at all the blues
activity in this state.
Got a few pictures of him back stage at the S.F. Blues fest this last
year.
This is one artist that deserves a fan club for all the work he has
done for the blues.
Cause 'Miss Bessy sure got fine bar b que'.
Peace through blues,
Brad..

This is one artist that deserves a fan club for all the work he has
done for the blues.
Cause 'Miss Bessy sure got fine bar b que'.
Peace through blues,

   Hello,
As a new member, I just thought I'd introduce myself.

Congrats on you newest album, DELTA HARDWARE, coming out in May, Ace.
From the description on your website, this one sounds like it will be
a Blues Music Award, Blues Rock winner. I have always liked that you
have mainly used your touring band(s) on your albums in the past. I
always listen to all of your stuff and I like it when you get what you
hear at your live gigs.

Yes, your newest band mix, lead guitarist and hot, local, young
sensation Chris "The Kid" Andersen; gettin' down to BASSics,
wonderment Randy Bermudes; and skin slammin' dynamite in a small
package, June Core, are the bomb, (meant in a good way). It has been
so nice to see them locally, gracing the stages of several different
venues in the Bay on your full-band downtime. What a treat for us!
They are some of the nicest cats and love to play, play, play. This
is why they go to jams and give us their time and play their solid
hearts out for us close to their homes in the San Francisco Bay Area.
(you all can read more about the band on and off in my Bay Area Blues
Club at http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/bayareablues and see photos
of the band and the Ace, on Joe's page at
http://mrjoe.dyndns.org/gallery/blues2006
(Thanks Joe for the awesome shots!)

I look forward to seeing you and Henri sometime this year, Ace, when
time and money allows. It has been a busy year for all of us. Heck,
it has been a busy and interesting life full of love, BLUES, changing
relationships, BLUES, love lost, BLUES, tragedies, BLUES, health
trials and tribulations, BLUES, new beginnings, BLUES, pain, BLUES,
successes, BLUES, and all that life entails, and of course...(did I
mention?) BLUES!

I miss talking to you and hope to do just that at one of your gigs one
day soon! It has been way to long!

Take it easy out there on the road, you world drifter you!

Peace, blessings, and bluesings...

PLEASE take a moment to send an e-mail to these addresses and state that you

JJ,

Could you post the petition addy again for those who didn't get a round tuit the
first time??

I posted my thoughts....@ Stephen Davidson.....

From that note they're feelin' the pressure for sure. Any idea who's playing at
"their" festival?? They ought to be informed of the controversy and historical
rape of the name...perhaps they'd change their venue to the one and only "real"
King Biscuit" fes....

mb

Charlie, my heart broke at the news of your Mother and Father. I know they had
to have been prouder than hell of their son. I hope you had a good if not
subdued birthday party. You've done the legacy of your parents good. I'll bet
they freaked at the idea of you taking off with Big Walter but to their credit,
and yours, y'all made it happen....the rest is history. I thank your folks for
raising you well and letting you be yourself and allowing you to find your own
way. The last time I saw you play, you blew me away....I'll bet Big Walter
couldn't be prouder of your monster tone. What more can I say....

Best regards,

Stephen Davidson

This is a letter I recieved from Wayne Andrews, director of The real King
Biscuit Festival:
-----------------------------------------------------

This is a good summary of what has been going on but just to clarify a few
things for everyone:

* We did show King Biscuit Entertainment our financials to demostrate we
do not earn $20,000 off the festival. These financials where audited by
an outside CPA.

* We offered them a business plan, which they turned down, which would
have given them set dolllar amount every year, plus a share of every t-
shirt sold, the rights to broadcast the festival on radio and keep the
advertising money, and other revenue and they turned it down. They are
not willing to let us have the name for a $1- they said, even after we
told them we could not afford the $20,000 they asked, that was the amount
they felt was fair and they wanted it in cash.

* As for not spending money to keep the name alive. I think putting on a
festival for 20 years has some value, I think getting great magazines like
Blues Revue to report about the festival, or having BET film tv shows, or
movies filmed in your town has value in preserving the name.

* I think Kevin should remember they took their name from the radio show
in Helena to honor them musical heritage of the Delta,it used to say so on
thier website before he bought the King Biscuit Flower Hour, now they are
saying that it doesn't matter, that they are the reason for the King
Biscuit name. If they need a reminder I have a copy of the old website
page.

* Kevin thinks he is clever by saying "all this media is keeping my brand
in the news and helping me." Our goal of keeping the story in the news is
to keep the King Biscuit name in the news and let people know that Helena
will still have a festival that celebrates the music, is free to the fans,
and is put on by a community that welcomes visitors. Our goal is to reach
not the 100,000 visitors who come to the festival each year, but the 8% of
the music buying public who purchase roots music. This is and educated
crowd that knows the history of music and supports it not by buying
overpriced hamburgers in chain resturants, but in purchasing cd's from
indy labels, going to bars to support bands, and coming to festivals.

I think by being true to the history of the music and by trying to carry
on the tradition we will pass on a legecy to a new generation of blues
fans. After seeing over 100 great acts at the International Blues
Challenge this weekend It proves that this is not a historical music, but
a music that makes history every day.

No matter what Performa does the history of the King Biscuit name will
always be linked to Helena, and everytime you open a resturant the story
will come out that it all started in a little town in Arkansas.

Kevin Cain and John Elkington could have been the saviors of a part of
music history. If they are so business savvy and know how to make money
why did they not make an offer to "manage" the festival? Why not build on
something that already exists? Think of the fan support, customer loyalty,
and news that would have been generated if you had worked with Helena.
Now you just look like another carpetbagger.

I know John Elkington and the group in New York say the petition won't
change their mind, but the petition does matter.

I don't think the petition will change their mind - I think the actions
that are coming from a strong, united voice of music fans and their
potential customers is having an impact.

Updates are being sent to businesses on Beale Street - several of the bars
on Beale street care and have contacted Helena to see what they can do to
help. They know bad press means customers stay away!

The Blues Foundation, which hosts key events that bring tourist to Memphis
and Beale Street has sent a letter to Performa asking about the King
Biscuit.

The rapid growth of the petition is what generated all this media! The
Associated Press, TV stations, have all run stories in Arkansas,
Mississippi and Tennessee.

"If we make any money it's seed money for the next
year. We haven't ever made $20,000. It's not a
reasonable number," said Wayne Andrews, the executive
director of Sonny Boy Blues Society. The group, a
charitable organization, has organized the festival
since 1986.................................
"The issue isn't about the blues festival. It's about
fiscal responsibility," said John Elkington, whose
Performa Entertainment Inc. has a licensing agreement
with King Biscuit Entertainment to use the name for
restaurants and a separate festival in Memphis, Tenn.

"Open your books, show us how much you make, and allow
us to then see if we can give you logo rights for $1 a
year, or something like that," Elkington said.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

OK folks, listen up. The King Biscuit Blues Festival is a NON-PROFIT
organization. As such, their books are public. John Elkington KNOWS this. He
is blowing smoke because he thinks the public is stupid and will buy that
crap. When Performa first leased the rights, the SOB said there was "no hard
feelings" between the SBBS and Performa. We all KNOW that was a lie. There
is NO WAY The SBBS can afford to pay these greedy corporate pigs and still
keep the festival free. He says "it`s not about a Blues festival". WTF?? Why
is Performa planning a featival AT THE SAME TIME as the real Biscuit? Next,
Elkington will be trying to convince the public that The SBBS is storing
weapons of mass destruction in the Delta Cultural Center.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"But King Biscuit Entertainment president Kevin Cain
said that while the company has spent millions of
dollars promoting the trademark, the festival hasn't
spent any."

WHAT? MILLIONS?? That means he is saying they have spent at least TWO
million or more "promoting the trademark". Have any of you EVER seen
anything promoting the trademark? How many of you even heard of King Biscuit
Entertainment before they tried to extort money from the SBBS? It`s the SBBS
that has kept the King Biscuit name alive for over twenty years. It`s the
King Biscuit Time radio show in Helena that has used the name for SIXTY-FIVE
years. MILLIONS? Where did you spend it, on Sri Lanka national television?
-----------------------------------------------------------------

"Elkington said the petition will never matter.
"I understand their frustration," he said. "The issue
won't go away even if they have a million people on
the petition."

I`ve said from the very beginning that Performa and KBE will pay no
attention to the petition. Why? Because they don`t care about Blues or its
history and heritage. They don`t care about Blues fans, and they don`t care
about robbing the Delta of its heritage to make a buck. The idea behind the
petition is to make people aware of what they are doing. The petition will
be sent to Performa and KBE, but more importantly, it will be sent to
Memphis newspapers, the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Beale
Street Business Association, and most importantly, the SPONSORS of Performa.
Sponsors are trying to WIN customers, not alienate them. (Look at Kobe
Bryant, Madonna, Wacko Jacko and Kate Moss) Sponsors back away from
controversy. this little petition is gathering enough attention that it has
been featured on a major MS TV station, and now in this A.P. article. If we
hit hem where they think, in the checkbook, they will have to take notice.
Elkington is beginning to feel the pressure, and it`s obvious. Now is the
time to turn up the heat and keep the pressure on. Many thanks to the people
who have signed this petition, and if you haven`t, and support the Blues,
please sign it.

The King Biscuit Blues Festival is FREE. The SBBS depends on donations and
sponsors to help with costs. They work hard to bring a great festival to
Blues fans for free. It is time for us Blues fans to step up and go to bat
to keep the King Biscuit name in Helena.

By ANNIE BERGMAN
Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Fans of an Arkansas music
festival are singing the blues over plans to drop the
"King Biscuit" name because sponsors cannot afford to
pay $20,000 to the New York company that holds the
trademark.

The King Biscuit Blues Festival is billed as the
largest free blues festival in the South. The fall
festival typically draws 100,000 people to Helena-West
Helena, where historians say the nation first heard
the blues.

"If we make any money it's seed money for the next
year. We haven't ever made $20,000. It's not a
reasonable number," said Wayne Andrews, the executive
director of Sonny Boy Blues Society. The group, a
charitable organization, has organized the festival
since 1986.

The society has launched an online petition hoping
King Biscuit will reign in the Delta again this year.
A King Biscuit license holder said festival organizers
are at fault for not sharing more information with New
York-based King Biscuit Entertainment.

The festival used the King Biscuit name for free until
2005, when talks to set a fair price between event
organizers and King Biscuit Entertainment fell
through. The company has owned the trademark since it
launched the radio program "King Biscuit Flower Hour"
in 1973.

Andrews says he respects that King Biscuit
Entertainment owns the trademark, but says the company
should respect that Helena is forever linked to the
name. "King Biscuit Time," sponsored initially by King
Biscuit Flour, has been carried on KFFA-AM in
Helena-West Helena since Nov. 21, 1941. The show is
the nation's longest continuously running blues
program.

"The King Biscuit name has been around since 1941. We
recognize that heritage with the festival. Why not be
part of that and be the savior of the name?" Andrews
said.

But King Biscuit Entertainment president Kevin Cain
said that while the company has spent millions of
dollars promoting the trademark, the festival hasn't
spent any.

Elkington said if the Sonny Boy Blues Society could
prove that they make no money on the festival, King
Biscuit Entertainment wouldn't have a problem with the
name being on the festival.

Helena native Jay Sheffield, who co-owns seven Huey's
restaurants in Memphis, said the King Biscuit legacy
belongs to Helena-West Helena regardless of who owns
the trademark.

"The name King Biscuit is always a name that we
considered ours. It was part of everyday life. I don't
know about the legalities, but the heritage of the
name lies in Helena, Arkansas," Sheffield said.

Sheffield also suggests that those in the blues
business donate money to help pay for the name.

Andrews says he hopes the petition, drafted by
bluesman L.W. "Junior" Jackson and signed by 2,200
people as of Thursday, will help reopen negotiations.

Elkington said the petition will never matter.

"I understand their frustration," he said. "The issue
won't go away even if they have a million people on
the petition."

The petition to bring the King Biscuit name beck to its home in Helena, AR
is picking up steam! We now have close to 2200 signatures and it is growing
rapidly every day! I want to thank everyone who is supporting this. With
more support we can show the greedy, insensitive thieves at Performa
Entertainment Real Estate what a public relations disaster they have
created. If you want to see justice served, and value the history and
heritage that is the Blues and ave yet to sign this petition, please do it.
Your comments are important, but please do not use foul language. For those
of you who aren`t aware of the situation, please read the following.
---------------------------------------------------------------

To provide a little background, allow me to capsulize the situation. Since
1941, KFFA radio in Helena has broadcast a radio show called "King Biscuit
Time". This radio show was a Blues show hosted by famous Blues artist "Sonny
Boy" Williamson. The show was very important to Blues music`s history and is
the longest running Blues radio show in the country. It was sponsored by The
King Biscuit Flour Company in Helena. In the early 1970s, a NYC company
began broadcasting a one-hour rock concert series and called it "The King
Biscuit Flower Hour", essentailly stealing the name. From the late 70s
untill the late 90s, this company was dormant. They began leasing archives
of the show and petitioned a court in New York for rights to the name. The
King Biscuit Flour Company had long been out of business, although the
Helena radio show still used the name for the sake of its historical
significance. From 1983, the non-profit Sonny Boy Blues Society has put on a
free Blues festival, calling it The King Biscuit Blues Festival in honor of
this hertage. Through some travesty of justice, the New York court awarded
the rights to the people who produced the rock shows, who then named their
company "King Biscuit Entertainment". KBE then decided to extort money from
The Sonny Boy Blues Society for use of the name they had nurtured for twenty
years. Being a non-profit organization putting on a free festival, the SBBS
could not afford these demands and were forced to stop using the name last
year, only 2 months before the scheduled festival. King Biscuit
Entertainment then leased the name to Performa Entertainment of Memphis.
Performa decided to set up a festival using the name at the same time in
order to confuse music fans and drain the attendees from the original
festival. This festival is a major source of income for an impovershed area
of The Delta, and your neighbors. They also plan to force the Helena radio
show off the air so that they can broadcast their own show from Beale
Street, again stealing the heritage and income from Helena.

This blatant act of corporate greed is a slap in the face of Blues fans and
a huge black eye for Memphis and its tourist industry. Blues fans around the
world are outraged. An online petition has been started that calls for a
boycott of the Memphis festival, Beale Street, and any peoject Performa is
involved in. Here are a few comments taken from the petition:

"We simply could not believe that cooperate America could be so blind. The
Helena Blues fest and King Biscuit (Time) are historic around the world as
the "REAL DEAL" in blues. You can never move that to Memphis or anywhere
else. Please be reasonable and let the name stand for what it has always
stood for Blues in Helena!!!!!!!"

"What's being done to the King Biscuit Blues Festival, and to the city of
Helena, Arkansas, after the support it has given Blues music for decades, is
a travesty. It is appalling that this can happen, and I will never support
this Corporate take over. Helena is the home of The Biscuit, and nothing
will ever change that."

"Once again greed trumps history and heritage...the people responsible for
this travesty should be ashamed of themselves. Anyone with half a brain can
see that this theft and exploitation of the King Biscuit name is just plain
wrong!!"

It`s obvious that Performa has created a public relations disaster that is
reflecting directly on the city of Memphis. The only way to rectify this is
for the good people of Memphis, business organizations and The Memphis
Convention and Visitors Bureau to convince Performa that what they are doing
is wrong, and is bad for Memphis. Tell Performa to allow the Sonny Boy Blues
Society to keep the King Biscuit name and allow "King Biscuit Time" to
continue broadcasting as it has for over six decades. Convince them that
holding a festival in direct competition with the Helena festival will
backfire and do irreparable damage to their own reputation, as well as
hurting the city of Memphis.
