of the 1991 Sacred Harp and 1958 Christian Harmony will be on hand.
Hope to see you there.

Subject: Historical Programs at Fairfax County Libraries this Tuesday
I'm giving two of my historically themed musical programs for Fairfax
County Libraries on this Tuesday, November 10.
1pm "Songs of the Civil War" at Patrick Henry Library in Vienna
Here's a link to a poster for that program
http://judycook.net/posters/Patrick%20Henry%20CW%20Nov%2010.pdf
6:45pm "Mark Twain's America" at Reston Regional Library in Reston
Here's a link to a poster for that program:
http://judycook.net/posters/Reston%20Mark%20Twain%20Nov%2010.pdf
Both programs are done in costume and are songs of the 19th Century
woven together with historical details, quotes, hundreds of projected
images, concertina tunes...Every song in the Civil War program is
introduced with letters from my own great-great-grandparents.
Each program is an hour long and is FREE.
I would love to have a good audience in spite of the facts that it is a
weekday and, in at least one case, it has been three years since they
had an adult program.
If you can help me publicize these programs - especially if you know
someone who might enjoy them - I would really appreciate it.
Many thanks!

The music is sung a cappella without harps or any other musical instrument. The music is printed in ³patent notes² wherein the shape of the note head indicates the syllables FA, SOL, LA, and MI. The book includes psalm tunes, fuging tunes, and anthems, as well as Scotch Irish folk songs and revival hymns. Books are available for sale. All are welcome, no experience necessary! Call John or Kelly for more information at (540) 955-2660. Send us your email address if you would like to be put on our electronic mailing list; to jdelre@.... Greetings Friends,
A number of us in the Sandy Spring area are interested in starting a monthly
singing. In our intial conversations we landed on the 2nd Sunday, not
realizing this was the/a regular Balt. singing. Is this current (2nd Sun.)?
Is there a Thurs PM one, also? Are they related? What's the approx. #
attending each?
If we switched to another Sunday, e.g. 3rd, would singers be likely to
travel (a week after the 2nd Sunday singing?). Perhaps a phone conversation
could be helpful as we prepare to do further planning. If anyone is
inclinded, please phone me 574-536-5998 (cell) and I'd be happy to discuss.
I had briefly spoken with someone (Joel?) following the Sunday (2nd day)
singing of this spring's Potomac convention where he mentioned the Thursday
eve. one, but would appreciate an update on that as well as other info /
suggestions on the above. I've been singing S.H. for about 15 years, mostly
in the Michiana (Goshen, IN./Kalamazoo, MI. and Chicago singings but after
my wife and I moved here last year have only been to a couple. (I also
attended the New Year's singing in VA.)
In the meantime, with limited time to switch away from our original thinking
/ planning, we will go ahead and have our initial SSS (Sandy Spring Singing)
this Sunday. All are welcome and would help in our getting off the ground
(although we plan for dinner *on* the ground!!!!) and in our discussion of
whether another Sunday makes more sense. Our plan for this Sunday:
Sandy Spring* Sacred Harp Singing
2nd Sunday of the Month, beginning Sunday, July 12, 2009
The Sandy Spring (Quaker) School House
17715 Meeting House Road, Sandy Spring 20860
4:00 - 6:00 PM followed by potluck (local singers please bring food)
If desired, singing can continue after potluck for another hour or so.
For more information, please contact "KB" @ kent.beck@... or
301-774-3183 (H) or 574-536-5998 (cell).
Sandy Spring is in Montgomery County on Route 108, between Ashton and Olney.
Meeting House Road is south off Route 108 at "the" stoplight in Sandy
Spring. Parking is available at The Community House, a small white building
which will be on your left shortly after turning on Meeting House Road. The
School House is a separate small white building with a front porch just up
the path (walkway) behind the Community House.
I look forward to hearing/talking to someone soon.

Last weekend's Potomac River Convention is still joyfully singing in my heart.
Here are a few photos & a video that just barely express it.

Happy Easter to all,

Elisabeth "Lisa" Higgins Null has had an article published by _Singer
Network_: "Making a Joyful Noise: Shape-Note Singers Now and Then"
at:

Lisa, a member of FSGW, is an experienced Sacred Harp singer, very
conversant with our tradition, and she consulted experts. She was not
given
the right of review, and her original article was severely cut, leading
to
some potential misapprehensions. Nevertheless, I think the final
product is
quite fine, well worth your attention. Please look at it soon, because
at
some point in the near future Singer Network will archive it for
members
only. Lisa and I are trying to find a way to keep the article
available.
Please email me at miriamkilmer@... if you might be interested in
contributing to this specific shapenotes project, should that become a
factor.
I am particularly pleased that there is a timely link in the article to
Steven Sabol's 2009 Potomac River Singing Convention page.
I hope to see many of you there tomorrow!

Hi all- I'm very excited about this weekend's 20th annual PRC. I'll be
arriving at Pohick Church around 11. Anyone else who is willing and able to
show up early to set up will be very welcome. Registration starts at 12:30.
I'm looking forward to a good convention, and I hope to find a time to
mention that this is the 20th annual convention and have a show of hands for
people present who were at the first convention, so give some thought to
your history with PRC. See you all this weekend. Bev
