Chhandayan Inc. is a not-for-profit organization of music registered under the states of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Florida. It also enjoys 501(c) (3) status granted by IRS, which implies that any donation made towards Chhandayan Inc. is entirely tax deductible. It has been conducting its activities mainly out of New York and New Jersey since April 1998 and its three initial directors are Mr. Samir Chatterjee, Mr. Debapriya Nayak and Mr. Eric Phinney. Its purpose is to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Indian music in the United Sates. In this process it also intends to solidify its connection with World Music. It intends to satisfy, in all possible ways, the interest and enthusiasm for Indian music. Its list of activities includes:
1) Conducting regular classes in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Florida. Classes are held in all levels – Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced on a weekly, bi-weekly or tri-weekly schedule. Classes are either of one hour or hour and half duration. Advance registration is required for all group classes.
2) Conducting workshops on aspects of Indian music such as Tabla, vocal and Instrumental music in different locations all over North America
3) Running a store with the supply of the best quality of musical instruments, essential books on Indian music and a variety of recorded media.
4) Organizing concerts of Indian music at different locations featuring musicians of outstanding caliber. The average numbers of concerts and other events presented by Chhandayan in a year is 20. The highlight of all these concerts, of course, is the All Night during the Spring of every year.
5) Publishing books and recorded music. It already has one book A Study of Tabla, a DVD Dawning Ragas, and several CDs and cassettes published.
6) Production of multi-cultural shows such as Nacho Nacho – Gypsy Story teller (Indian and Flamenco dance and music), Chhand-Anand - World Percussion Ensemble.
