Parker is hot. And I like the Mayfield cd (despite Amiri Baraka getting on my
nerves)- but it gets old quick. My favorite Parker? Scrapbook- with Billy Bang
and Hamid Drake.

Unfortunately I'm going to be gone this weekend - going to miss Jazz fest
too. I also wanted to catch William Parker doing Curtis Mayfield, but
unfortuntely I'm going to have to miss that one too.

FINALLY!

Suddenly I have a couple things happening worthy of mention on this list.

The first of these is happening a week from Saturday night- Sept 5 (as if
there was nothing else going on in town on that night!)- yes I know most of you
will be going to all the fests, after-fests, and after-after- fests HOWEVER if
you just so happen to be on the remote north side- at 2706 W Touhy (at a very,
very friendly synagogue) around 11 PM you can get to see Chicago's newest
experimental Jewish music band- the one and only Mi Yodea. If anyone has heard
me bitchin' on and off this mailing list the last 12 years or so- you know this
project has been a long time coming. And gig #1 went so well I feel confident
enough to announce gig #2 on this list.

So what do we do? Gosh- it's genre-free Jewish music. Influenced by Yoshimi,
Braxton, and Black Sabbath (that would be our drummer ;-) as well as examining
the whole kit-and-kaboodle spectrum of Jewish music. Also- a band which contains
a drumming group- because the bandleader loves Sun Ra and The Art Ensemble of
Chicago.

   Who are we?

   Matt Kanter- Drum Kit

   Phil Isaacson- Digi-Horn

   Ann Gross- Percussion

   Sue Kaplan- Percussion

   Eliezer Kaplan- Keys & Writing

This list has ben a wonderful resource for me down the years. Many of you have
become inspirations, foils, internet buddies and just plain buddies. This
project (as well as the other project which we will post to this list in a week
or two) would not have happenined without you folks!

OOPS- All Respect to Mr Baraka but this was NOT supposed to be public!
And my remarks only applied to this CD.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Schedule set for FOURTH annual Umbrella Music Festival, November 5th-8th
Event celebrates jazz and improvised music from Chicago and beyond

Umbrella Music is pleased to announce the final schedule for the fourth-annual
Umbrella Music Festival, November 5th-8th. The event celebrates jazz and
improvised music from Chicago and beyond.

Called by the Chicago Reader "perhaps the most important jazz festival in
Chicago," the Umbrella Music Festival features cutting-edge jazz and improvised
music from around the world, with a particular focus on artists from the
diverse, cooperative and thriving local scene.

The festival opens Thursday, November 5th with a special evening dubbed
"European Jazz Meets Chicago," co-presented by Umbrella Music, the City of
Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and several European consulates and
cultural organizations.  These concerts will feature some of the best
improvising musicians on the European scene, some of them with their regular
working groups, and some of them in first-time collaborations with their Chicago
counterparts.

The concerts continue over the weekend at the regular Umbrella Music venues, and
this year will feature three elder statesman of the improvised music world:
legendary trumpeter Bobby Bradford, renowned multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee,
and the Chicago debut of Japanese alto-saxophone legend Akira Sakata.

The complete schedule, as well as all festival-related news and updates are
available at www.umbrellamusic.org.

UMBRELLA MUSIC is a group of Chicago musicians and presenters working to provide
performance opportunities for creative and improvising musicians. Umbrella
members book weekly concert series on Wednesdays at The Hideout, Thursdays at
Elastic, and Sundays at The Hungry Brain.  More information on the group and on

ABOUT THE EXPERIMENTAL PIANO SERIES:
The Experimental Piano Series (EPS) showcases performances by
innovators in today's world of experimental piano. These performances
include approaches that are influenced and informed by jazz, "new music,"
classical music, world music, and other genres. Some of the performances
during EPS will involve solo pieces, and others will involve duos and trios.
Some of the pieces will be improvised, whereas others will be performances
of compositions that are notated.
EPS is organized by the Chicago Composers Forum and the Borderbend
Arts Collective. Jim Baker, Ben Boye, Justin Dillard, Irina Feoktistova,
Paul Giallorenzo, Jon Hey, Matthew McCright, Adam Tendler, and Ann Ward
performed during EPS' first season.
The rest of EPS' second season includes: Phyllis Chen and the Steve
Cohn Trio (December 11, 2009); Adam Marks and CUBE Ensemble (February 12,
2010); and Sebastian Huydts and TUNTUI (Friday, April 9, 2010).
A reception will follow the concert.

Thollem Mcdonas, pianist/comproviser, was born and raised in the San
Francisco Bay Area of Irish and Cherokee descent. Not long after birth he

century. After graduating with degrees in both piano performance and

movements and ecological restoration projects before coming back to music
with his full focus. He is currently touring perpetually, mostly as a
soloist but also in collaboration with many other individuals and groups.
Thollem's extensive travels as a performer and teacher have covered
much of the North American continent and Europe (he often leads listening
and group improvisation workshops as well as master-classes). He is a
founding member of several innovative ensembles all of varying and disparate
musics. In the past 5 years alone he has added 18 albums to his discography
on 6 different vanguard labels in 3 different countries. His music is
diverse, with each album and every concert exploring a variety of approaches
and paths, resulting in dramatically different outcomes.
Thollem is a recent recipient of a Meet The Composer grant. He was
commissioned by The Limon Dance Company for a large-scale piece in
commemoration of their 50th year anniversary. This previous September he was
invited to perform the late works of Claude Debussy on the piano on which
they were written, as well as his own comprovisations with Stefano
Scodanibbio. This will be the first album (OnDebussy'sPianoAnd...) ever
recorded on Debussy's piano. He is now building a 10 piece ensemble composed
half of musicians from the states and half musicians from Mexico.
Thollem has performed in theaters, art galleries, universities,
elementary schools, concert halls, jazz clubs, rock clubs, festivals,
warehouses, house concerts, streets, forests, riots and on television and
radio. He has performed piano concertos with symphonies, played in West
African drumming troupes, Javanese gamelan ensembles, an afro-punk band,
with hundreds of free improv groups, and as an accompanist and a composer
for opera and modern dance. His music appeals to a wide variety of audiences
because of these rich and wildly disparate experiences. Currently Thollem
Primarily plays his own comprovisations he calls Eccentriclect Music, for
people and everyone else.

Friends:

I've been blessed in recent weeks to receive and purchase many new albums of
new music from creative Chicagoans. I plan to spin as many as possible this
Thursday, 7 to 9 p.m. on WHPK 88.5 FM, whpk.org. New cds from Corey Wilkes
and Abstract Pulse, Dee Alexander, Klang, Lucky 7s, Jeff Parker, Ben
Patterson, Fred Anderson Trio with Tim Daisy and Harrison Bankhead, and
more! Also, I am expecting a special guest deejay to assist me. See you
there!

Andy Pierce

P.S. If you have new music and haven't sent me a copy yet, then please send
it along. An ugly, home-brew review copy is fine. It doesn't have to be the
pretty, for-sale kind.

:)

If one considers a hurdy-gurdy or a band organ to have the potential for
creative music, then this message is on topic. If not, apologies.

However, I would be remiss if I did not invite all of you to an event I am
hosting on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Sanfilippo estate in Barrington Hills,
Illinois, in honor of the late interior designer Joe DuciBella, of Chicago.
The collection includes what is billed as the largest theatre organ
installation in the world, many Victorian band organs, a French art noveau
carousel, a Pullman palace car, Uptown Theatre (Chicago) chandeliers, Granda
Theatre (Chicago) terra cotta, etc. I venture to say you will be amused at
the scale and quantity of Jazz Age artifacts collected here.

Interested? View the details of the invite and related links at
www.uptowntheatre.com

Thanks. And apolgies for being off topic. The intentions of this event are
to have fun and to expand our acquaintance.

A new project- The Atomic Theory Dance Band- the Atomic Theory being that the
pieces are based on simple ideas by band members- which we are calling atomic
pieces or seeds- and then expanded upon by the rest of the band. The rule being
that what the band comes up with must be danceable- which of course means
different things to different people. We are
John Hardwick- Drums
Kurt Forney- Electronics
David Rogers- Bass
Sid Yiddish- Human Siren, Shofar etc etc etc
Aimee Bass- Percussion
Ann Gross- Percussion
Sue Kaplan- Percussion
Eliezer Kaplan- Drums & Keyboard

Anyways we are making our debut as part of an AIDS benefit sponsored by Tomorrow
Unlimited at The Tonic Room 2447 N Halsted Tuesday night at 8. The program for
the evening looks like this-

-Twedros Aklilu (Ethiopian Interpretations)
-Rubee BlackRiver (Urban Folk & Spoken Word)
-Pleasure to Arrest (Alt Rock)
-The Atomic Theory Dance Band (Theoretically Correct Dance Explosion)

Here are a couple examples of Atomic Theory-

Metastablesound, in conjunction with Balance Point Acoustics records,
is excited to announce a Chicago performance of the Chicago/Bay Area
collaboration ‘Ausfegen’ that reunites the quartet of Paul Hartsaw
(saxophones) and Jerome Bryerton (percussion) from Chicago, and
Kristian Aspelin (ele guitar) and Damon Smith (double bass) from the
Bay Area.

This is the first Chicago performance for this quartet since the 2007
release of their CD, Ausfegen: Dedicated to Joseph Beuys.

"“Here's an example of highly experimental jazz that is executed in a
way that avoids being overly daunting or completely inaccessible.
While many of the most experimental jazz albums today incorporate
elevated Ayler-esque raucousness or spacey minimalism, "Ausfegen"
manages to be both quiet and highly interactive..."

- Mike Szajewski, WNUR Jazz

"...this music, its methods, structures and materials are connected
with the world-at-large, interacting with it in myriad ways.”

Known – Unknown
Contact Improvisation Intensive Workshop with Andrew de Lotbinière
Harwood
WHEN: October, 19-22, 2009, 12:00-18:30
WHERE: Schwelle 7, Berlin, Germany

KNOWN – UNKOWN

A movement laboratory – investigating improvisation, expression,
composition and performance

Andrew Harwood: I view this workshop as an exhilarating and formidable
adventure into the deeper layers of improvisational dance. Our goal is
to find a sense of timelessness in our dancing - a state of
consciousness that is aware but not self-conscious. Working with
dancers in a collaborative fashion is exciting to me. My desire is to
draw out the creativity, individuality and integrity of each dancer
while cultivating a team-like atmosphere. I wish to encourage the
dancers to let their own imagination, spirit and presence shine and
allow various performance qualities to emerge.

The realms where the known and the unknown converge are two distinct
and yet complementary worlds, where a rich array of ideas, movements
and images are merged and juxtaposed. Through various forms of
improvisation, Contact Improvisation, composition and chance
procedures we will practise instant inventiveness, make personal
choices, refine our sensing skills and build material. A series of
schemes, games, images, states and structures will help dancers create
a repertoire of personal gestures and phrases and develop various
improvisational strategies which in turn will become the framework for
composing solo, duet and group material be it set or improvised or a
combination of both. This entire process relies on the dancers
willingness to listen to themselves and each other, to take risks, to
call upon their confidence and to allow their skills as interpreters
to come into focus.
