so, the latest breaking news is that I, Weasel Walter, am leaving sunny
Oakland, California for the New York City hustle on December 1st. I'll be
loading up a one-way rental with a bunch of gear and socks and taking up
a sublet in Brooklyn. Lots of new things are in the works and I feel good
about the change.

I will be joining the tech metal band Behold . . . The Arctopus! on drums
and we'll be writing new, more extreme material from scratch. I'll also
be working with the power trio with Peter Evans and Mary Halvorson, as
well as investigating the extremes of expression with my group co-led by
master drummer Marc Edwards. Who knows . . . maybe the luttenbachers will
once again rear it's mechanical head. let's find out!

To celebrate, i have a new release and a ridiculous sale . . .

first up:

ug 40 Weasel Walter - "Large Group Performances 2007-2009" deluxe
mini-gatefold cd-r, ltd to 100 copies
12.00 postage paid in the US/13.00 Canada/15.00 europe/17.00 japan

Almost 80 minutes in length, these three epic large group pieces
encompass composition and improvisation with the modernistic ugEXPLODE
take you have come to know and love. This is not your grandparents' big
band music!!!!
Featuring the creme of the Bay Area avant garde including Henry Kaiser,
William Winant, Aram Shelton, Jon Raskin, John Gruntfest, Devin Hoff,
Aram Shelton, David Slusser, Darren Johnston, Kristian Hoffman, John
Ingle, Aaron Bennett, Ava Mendoza, Randy Hunt, Damon Smith, Andrew
Strain, Liz Allbee and Tim Perkis. A mix of abstract composition and
mind-melting improvisation, this release takes things up a notch into
unknown territory. Massive, furious and monolithic new music at its best.

SALE:

if you purchase the new ug 40 cd-r today at full price, you can add ONE
of the below CD titles to your order for only FIVE DOLLARS! i don't care
where you are ordering from - add five more bucks and it's yours! this
offer expires on NOVEMBER 29th, so act now and save big. This is our most
ridiculous sale yet and it's too stupid to last. act now.

Umbrella Music Presents:

The IMMEDIATE SOUND series @ The Hideout
Every Wednesday Night.

Please come out this Wednesday, November 25th for two sets with a fantastic
quartet that features two of jazz's finest emerging voices on saxophone, backed
by one of Chicago's hardest hitting rhythm sections:

Rempis/Ward/McBride/Reed
Dave Rempis - saxophones
Greg Ward - alto saxophone
Nate McBride - bass
Mike Reed - drums

*DJ Sets: Tomeka Reid spins Songs of Thanks

$6 cover charge

The Immediate Sound Series is pleased to welcome back DAVE REMPIS
(saxophones) and his quartet, which features three of Chicago’s most
distinct voices: GREG WARD (alto sax), NATE McBRIDE (bass) and MIKE REED
(drums).  Of particular interest is the front-line pairing of REMPIS and WARD
in a small group setting.  It is fair to say that these two are at the
forefront of the next generation of saxophonists working in jazz, with special
attention to their work on alto sax.  The group will be performing compositions
penned by Rempis, as well as some covers of classic tunes by the likes of
CHARLES DAVIS, JOHNNY DYANI, and JULIUS HEMPHILL.  REMPIS’ fiery playing can
be heard in many critically acclaimed ensembles, including THE ENGINES, REMPIS
PERCUSSION QUARET and the VANDERMARK 5.  This Quartet's infrequent
performances have become even more rare due to Ward's recent relocation to New
York, so do not miss their return to The Hideout stage!

"KLANG released their second album, Tea Music, this summer, and this
week they've undertaken a small tour to support it. The album is on my
short list of top Chicago jazz discs for 2009. Like Goodman and Hampton
before them, Falzone and Adasiewicz exploit the shared sonorities of
their instruments, but to wildly different ends, with a gauntlet of
post-modern strategies and tonal extremes. It's a captivating disc from
start to finish."

Umbrella Music Presents:

The IMMEDIATE SOUND series @ The Hideout
Every Wednesday Night.

Please come out this Wednesday, November 18th for an ultra-rare solo set and the
debut of a new quintet, both featuring one of the most distinct reedists to
emerge from Chicago in the last thirty years:

Set I - Mars Williams - solo woodwinds

Set II - Williams/Kessler/Sandstrom/Hunt/Zerang

The Immediate Sound Series is honored to present an evening that will feature
Chicago-based reed master Mars Williams in two very different contexts.  The
first set will feature an ultra-rare solo set by Williams that is sure to be a
revelation to audience members familiar with him from his many projects, or
first-time listeners alike.  A student of both Anthony Braxton and Roscoe
Mitchell, as well as the long-time foil and protege of the legendary Hal
Russell, Mars has truly carved out his own language and sound on all of the
instruments in his arsenal.  To hear him in this most intimate of settings is an
event three years in the making, and destined to be a highlight of the fall
concert series.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the second set will find Williams
surrounded by some familiar company in a first time grouping.  Comprised of the
dual basses of Kent Kessler and Brian Sandstrom, and the unique percussion
attack of Steve Hunt and Michael Zerang; this quintet is sure to explore areas
both familiar and new to their shared group history in countless ensembles over
the years.  In short, a five piece band that features two of the finest bass &
drum rhythm sections simultaneously, led by one of Chicago's most ferocious reed
players of the last thirty years.  Not to be missed!
