the earlier set at hotti biscotti
a recurrence of an earlier combination
   trio of
   josh abrams - bass
   jim baker - keyboards
   mars williams - reeds

given that it is the earlier set, it stops early as well,
probably not much later than 10:30,
in part from custom, and in part from anticipation
of the resumption of 'later sets', starting next week,

re tues jan 3 earlier set,
   sorry to re-spam,
but it now appears that Mars Williams will be unable to make it for tuesday
jan 3
   (and also not for next tues jan 10, either;
though I think he expects to be back on Jan 17).

for this tues jan 3rd earlier set, the current expectation is now of a duo
w/Josh Abrams (bass) & Jim Baker (keyboard).

it's free, at 8:30 pm, 3545 w. fullerton, probably not going beyond 10:30.

commissions are doing to revitalize the industry and put Bay Area
filmmakers back to work.

Screenings - The Greater Circulation (2005) a film:
Vertical Pool and Red Poppy Art House
presents the San Francisco premiere of
"THE GREATER CIRCULATION" (2005; 93 min.) a feature film by Antero Alli
incorporating Rainer Maria Rilke's
"Requiem For a Friend" (as translated by Stephen Mitchell).
Film clip URL: http://www.fractalvideo.com/HTML/TGCFV.html
Excerpt from the filmthreat.com review
**********************************
"Rainer Maria Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" (via the lyrical Stephen
Mitchell translation) is the heart, soul and mind of "The Greater
Circulation," by Berkeley filmmaker Antero Alli. The film has a
deceptively simple concept: an experimental theater company in
Berkeley, California, stages a performance ritual based on the poem,
and during the course of rehearsals and production the impact of the
poem comes to challenge and haunt the various people involved in this
endeavor. But beyond that concept is a deep, provocative and often
disturbing drama which poses questions of love, art, mortality and
grief with the grace and majesty of Rilke's work..simply
astonishing..."

Returning for a third year after two consecutive sold-out concerts,
globalFEST ˜ New York's world music extravaganza ˜ announces the
line-up for what has expanded to a two-night event. The festival takes
place Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2006 at The Public
Theater, with the same 13 acts performing each night.
As in years past, globalFEST 2006 challenges audiences to re-think the
parameters of world music. As the Village Voice's Carol Cooper
described the first year, "Few, if any, of these acts were obsessed
with the 'purity' of their music. Authenticity and purity are not the
same, and if festival participants chose to bend and blend genre
categories, it was only after serious study of those root musics they
hoped to update or alter. If anything, the participants in Manhattan's
first globalFEST proved it's possible to respect the past without being
forced to preserve it forever unchanged." Isaac Guzman wrote in The
Daily News, "Aside from the high quality of the artists, what's
striking about globalFEST is that it does away with typical notions of
what constitutes world music."
Since its 2004 launch, globalFEST has served as a beacon for
international musicians hoping to boost their presence in North
America. The festival seeks to showcase artists for fans and
impresarios alike. Scheduled to coincide with the annual Arts
Presenters conference˜a performing arts event where most North American
performing arts centers and festivals book their coming
seasons˜globalFEST identifies artists on the cusp of success here and
gives them a springboard for further accomplishment on the touring
circuit.

like to buy-- please don't hesitate to try and make me sell it to you. There
are of course things I won't want to part with, and I have sold a few things
already, but try me anyway.

No reasonable offers refused; discounts for multiples; I may sell things I'm
fond of for the right price + a CD-R copy; etcetera!

I'm floundering in debt and just now starting UNIVERSITY + working full time
and I need to turn assets into currency to ease the massive overwhelming
stress level.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone you know who may be interested,
and let me know if you'd be willing to forward it to any other improv-based
lists or groups.

Thanks for listening!

Love and All, Forging Ahead,
Rick Lopez

The esteemed Mr Hartsaw has already announced this ... and it's
also at http://eiorg.org/ ... There is almost no need to remind
that tomorrow evening at the Brain, we have a set, occasionally
described as "earlier", by Bryerton/Hartsaw/Seigfried/Jas. A.
Baker Esq., followed by Giallorenzo/Lonberg-Holm/Reed in a set
that some have dared to label "later".

The Hungry Brain is at 2319 W Belmont. Music begins at 10PM.
See you there ...

Soundpainting is the composing/conducting language developed by New York
composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, poets, actors, and visual
artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. At present this
language includes more than 750 gestures made by the composer/conductor
indicating the type of improvisation that is desired of the performers.
Direction and structure of the composition are gained through the parameter of
each set of signed gestures. Over the past 20 years, Soundpainting has evolved
into a complete language with which music, theater, dance, and film scores can
be realized spontaneously.

Fire destroys historic US church

A landmark church known as the birthplace of American gospel music has been
destroyed in a fire in Chicago.

The 116-year-old Pilgrim Baptist Church in the city's South Side went up in
flames on Friday night.

There were no reports of injuries and the cause of the blaze was not
immediately known.

The building, designed by distinguished architects Louis Sullivan and
Dankmar Adler, was built as a synagogue but was converted into a church in
1922.

Ned Cramer, curator of the Chicago Architecture Foundation, said the loss of
the building was devastating.

"It's like hearing a close relative has died or a good friend. It's
heartbreaking," he said.

During the 1930s, the church's congregation and music director, Thomas A
Dorsey, merged blues and hymns, creating what became known as gospel music.

The choir featured stars including Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland and
Sally Martin.

The church was replete with the architectural features, such as ornamental
designs, vaulted ceilings and grand acoustics, which made Sullivan and Adler
famous.

Pilgrim Baptist Church was a historic church located on the south side of
Chicago, Illinois. The church is notable both as an architectural landmark
and for the cultural contributions by the congregation of the church.

On January 6, 2006, the church was destroyed by fire. Located at 3301 S.
Indiana Ave, the church was in the heart of Chicago's Bronzeville
neighborhood.

The building was designed as a synagogue by Chicago architects Louis
Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, and built in 1890 and 1891. Originally it was
the home of Kehilath Anshe Ma'ariv, an important congregation in the
development of Reform Judaism; Adler was a member. A Baptist congregation
moved into the building in 1922, forming Pilgrim Baptist Church. In 1981 the
building was designated a landmark by the city of Chicago.

The church is credited as the birthplace of gospel music in the 1930s.
Thomas A. Dorsey, the "Father of Gospel Music", was the music director at
Pilgrim Baptist for decades. Mahalia Jackson, Sallie Martin, James Cleveland
and the Edwin Hawkins Singers are among those who have sung at the church.

The church also hosted the funeral service of boxer Jack Johnson in 1946,
and was prominent in the Civil Rights Movement.

It is believed that the fire that destroyed the building may have started
while workers were performing roof repairs during a $500,000 restoration.

I began UNIVERSITY (at 52 years of age, working full time and slammed with
debt) on TUESDAY, and I am determined to get through it, so I am selling
ALMOST EVERYTHING in my collection. The anguish is palpable, but whatever I
miss terribly in the coming years, I will buy again when I get my Radiology
Degree in early '09. It's got to be done... Hot Damn!

This is the first of MANY-- I will be banging these out in between
everything else I'm trying to do right now, and as you know I have nearly
the complete Crispell, Parker (Willi'm), Rivers, and Ware-- so if there's
anything in their recording career that you haven't been able to find, I may
have it. Please forward to all your collecting and music loving pals. Please
let me know if you're aware of any on-line forums where I can post these
lists. I do appreciate ANY help!

Everything LIKE NEW, and it's all CDs unless it says otherwise. On vinyl-- I
ain't no audiophile, and I'm sight grading these in my own naïve way, but I
am being cautious. If it says (cover)VG+/EX(vinyl) then the cover is quite
nice with minor defects and the LP is really clean. If I see nicks or
scratches I'll do a quick sound check. Other than that, I'm agreeable and
easy to deal with on any issues that may arise if you disagree with my
evaluations. The CDs are pristine, except for the occasional scuffed jewel
case, which if that's a bugaboo say so and I'll grab a clean one and change
it.

Breaks for quantity of course; Media Mail unless other method demanded of
course; LPs FOR LESS IF YOU CAN BURN ME A COPY when it gets there of course;
haggling allowed but not preferred of course because it only adds to my
stress load and I'm looking for relief but don't let that stop you if you
really desire something... ;-)

I accept PAYPAL, check, money order, well-concealed cash, first born, right
arm, eye teeth, etc.

I make the P.O. only once or twice a week, so keep that in mind.

THANKS!!!
RL

First communiqué for 2006. Transmission starts now.

NEWS:
James Plotkin "Kurtlanmak" [UR-022] was listed in WIRE magazine's year-end
issue as one of the best "Outer Limits" releases for 05. If you've heard the
recording you know WIRE is spot on with this. Thanks to Mr. Plotkin for the
opportunity to release this fantastic piece of music.

Utech Records has recently been working with the SASSAS and Hotcakes Gallery
to arrange a performance for Tetuzi Akiyama this summer in Milwaukee as part
of a short tour of the states. More details to follow as things solidify.

January UTECH updates:

TIM DAISY/FRANK ROSALY "Boombox Babylon" [025] $11
Tim Daisy (Triage, V5, Relay Signals, Engines) and Frank Rosaly (Mandarin
Movie,Chicago Luzern Exchange) performed as a drum/percussion duo last year
at 3030. Here is the recorded evidence. Hand assembled and numbered. Edition
of 125 cdr.

ANDERS HANA "Flesh Dispenser" [026] $9 EP
Anders Hana (Ultralyd, MoHa!, Jaga Jazzist, Born to Collapse) plays a wicked
set of solo electric guitar pieces. The title says it all. Hand assembled
and numbered. Edition of 175 cdr.

New to the STORE:

THE THING + JOE MCPHEE
Tour poster. Used to promote performance in Syracuse on Nov 27, 2005 at
Jazzcentral. Silk screened print in black ink on heavy art stock. Edition of
40. Hand numbered. Ships in crush-proof tube. $20

THE SKULL DEFEKTS "Rotating Feedback & Save the Skulls" CD [iDEAL036/AA05]
$16
Represented here by Henrik Rylander & Joachim Nordwall. Intense noise and
rhythmical hypnotic sounds with heavy drones. "Rotating Feedback & Save The
Skulls" is a 40+ minute drone straight out of the dark depths. This is
monotonous math rock and advanced noise experiments at its best. Recorded at
Studio Dental, Gothenburg, in autumn 2005. Limited edition of 200
hand-numbered copies and presented in a georgeous folder.

NASH KONTROLL "Your Left Hand Just Exploded" CD [iDEAL027] $13
Never heard of Nash Kontroll? Flipping the cd box will learn you that this a
trio of Dror Feiler, Mats Gustafsson and noise lover boy Lasse Marhaug. Dror
Feiler is a well-known and controversial artist and a saxophone player with
a love of volume. Mats Gustafsson plays also saxophones and electronics. The
recordings here were made by Swedish radio and by god, do they really
broadcast that? Because the three tracks carved into this cd is one hell of
a noise party.

KEIJI HAINO " Reveal'd to none as yet-an expedience to utterly vanish
consciousness while still alive" 2xCD [aRCHIVE14/15] $21
Completely stunning split release with Important records. Design work by
Stephen O'Malley. Full three panel accordian fold with letterpress printing
black/black. Finished size 6² x 5² Limited pressing of 1000.
Audio content- disc one is mostly layered elctronics and vocals and disc two
is Hurdy Gurdy with vocals. Gives a great feel for what it¹s like to see
Haino play in his native element. Recorded at Superdelux in Tokyo, 4/7/05.

MATS GUSTAFSSON/FRED LONBERG-HOLM "But a Cry Of Pain Rolls Up a Mountain" 7"
[iDEAL028/KNING003] $7
First installment in a beautiful hand-numbered (#300) art-edition series of
Gustafsson-led head-to-fists. This one pairs him with Chicago-area string
conjurer Fred Lonberg-Holm whose allusive fiddle strategies move from
off-the-map scrabbles and nut-crunchers through sawing Ornette-styled avant
Œbilly. Gustafsson plays baritone sax and alto fluteophone with the kind of
valve-fracturing force that posits whole universes of altered-tongue. Cover
drawings by Leif Elggren.

MATS GUSTAFSSON/LUCA TOMASSO MAI "While the Wind Mixes the Playing Cards of
Polite Faces" 7" [iDEAL031/KNING004] $7
Second installment in this on-going series of beautiful hand-numbered (#300)
art-edition singles from Gustafsson and partners. This one is the best yet,
a one-sided romp through dual baritone sax bludgeon, moving from an
orchestra of pig-trotting farm barps through huge gulfs of tactile skronk,
with each player working shadows of themselves into beautifully complex
waltzes with form. One-sided white vinyl. Cover drawings by Leif Elggren.

I was in NYC last weekend and witnessed two excellent concerts with Matthew
Shipp. One in trio with Mike Bisio and Jay Rosen, the other in duo with Rob
Brown. There I found out that Matthew would be coming through the midwest
to play two solo concerts at Hothouse in Chicago, Friday Feb. 10 and Sat.
Feb. 11. Too bad it's being kept such a secret. This music has a hard
enough time being sold to the public. We should all be working together to
help get the word out.

My ISP has taken it upon itself to educate us on the basics
of digital communication--it's off and on--and I will take
this opportunity to quickly mention what we in the trade
call a "planned event".

It is Jim Baker, et cetera--et paria--tentatively rumored to
be Kessler, Zerang and Lonberg-Holm. Earlier and later sets
will be played.

There's no way to be less tentative, unfortunately, but I did
hear the rumor from a mostly believable source (Jim Baker).
We will see.

The Hungry Brain is at 2319 W Belmont. Music begins at 10PM.

"It was with great sadness that I heard Alex had
died. He was 64. At the time of writing the exact
circumstances are unclear although it may have
been alcohol related.
One of the original Magic Band guitarists, Alex
can justifiably be known as the original 'Captain
Beefheart', being the prime mover to get the band
together and the musical director and organiser
in the early days."

This is an announcement of a concert in the

Myopic Bookstore music series This Monday January
16th at 7:30 -:-1564 N. Milwaukee Ave. The performers
will be Chicago musicians Joshua Manchester percussion
and Steve Parker trombone. As always, it's FREE!

Steve has just moved to the area from Germany, and
this concert is something of an introduction. He has
an accomplished mastery of the extended techniques of
his instrument. Steve and I realized that by
coincidence we have both spent time living in the
small town of Healy, Alaska. Monday's music will be
free-improvisation; it will be our first performance
together.

As part of your holiday, join us at Myopic bookstore!

Best Regards,

         Joshua Manchester

7pm» LIVE JAZZ
10pm» THE GROOVE TEMPLE W/ DJ SHANI

I wonder if you could get the Morseland to say more than "LIVE JAZZ 7 pm" on
their Music Event Calendar (ntm the wrong time)? They detail all the
particulars DJ's and rock bands on the rest of the week, but then they penciled
in just "LIVE JAZZ 7 pm" for all the Mondays in Jan., without details.

Of course this is a fun way to get people to check out improvised music, like
WNUR running the innocently named "Jazz Show" on weekday mornings. "Honey, I
found 89.3, but I'm not sure WHAT this music is on here!?!"

- Frank T.

Correct my being wrung but tell me true or false. Has anyone else ever
made music on a waste basket or am I the original composer?
