Do any of you guys who were singing in the 70s remember a pretty good bass named
Ed Hendley? He moved to the east coast since then, but he is back in the area
now and is thinking of singing with a chorus that doesn't do a lot of
choreography. I told him the Chordbusters would likely be a good fit. :-)

Small world part: the Hendleys bought our house on Doe Brook Lane. Andy and I
are now living in the East Pointe subdivision near the Hollywood Theaters just
so I can ride my bicycle in to work.

Here's a video that can serve as a bad example:

1. Don't forget your words
2. Be expressive
3. Make sure your medleys are appropriate
4. Move!

The documentary "The Singing Revolution" will be at the Ragtag Cinema
July 30 - Aug 5.

http://www.singingrevolution.com

"Most people don¢t think about singing when they think about revolution. But song was the weapon of choice when Estonians sought to free themselves from decades of Soviet occupation. 'The Singing Revolution' is an inspiring account of one nation¢s dramatic rebirth. It is the story of humankind¢s irrepressible drive for freedom and self-determination."

Barbershop group hopes for 100 voices

By REBEKAH HEIL

February 20, 2008 | 9:48 p.m. CST

Editor's note: This event, scheduled for Thursday night, has been
canceled because of poor weather conditions.

COLUMBIA — The four-part harmony of barbershop music will reverberate
from First Baptist Church on Thursday night, but it won't be from a
quartet.

For the Boonslick Chordbusters, the goal is a group of 100 voices.

To meet that goal, the Chordbusters, a barbershop chorus based in
Columbia that meets weekly at the church and performs around Missouri,
is inviting the public and mid-Missourians involved in music to its
fourth annual 100-Man Night on Thursday.

Singing will begin at 7 p.m. and will continue until 9:30 p.m., with a
break for refreshments and socializing. The group will focus on
learning new songs in the first half, and in the second half, they
will stand on risers to sing as if performing.

"Part of the reason that we exist is to provide opportunities for the
community to get out and experience a cappella singing, whether it's
through actually participating in something like this or coming to one
of our shows," said Greg Grote, a Chordbusters member from Jefferson City.

The Chordbusters sent out invitations to vocalists in mid-Missouri and
expect to have singers from Moberly and a chorus group from Jefferson
City, among others.

One of the farthest travelers will be guest director Jim Bagby of
Kansas City, who recently retired from directing the Heart of America
chorus, which has been internationally ranked among barbershop groups.

Chordbusters member Chuck Bay of Columbia said Bagby is an annual
guest and brings exciting material to 100-Man Night.

"Last year, he introduced what they call `woodshedding,' which is sort
of how barbershop got started," Bay said. "A guy sings the melody and
the other three kind of harmonize around that. It goes back to the
roots of the style. Believe it or not, you can actually do that with a
big group."

Bagby is also bringing a quartet from Kansas City to help teach new
material to the Chordbusters.

The group usually has about 20 or 30 men in attendance, Bay said. He
said that along with getting the community involved in the fun,
100-Man Night is a chance for the group's regulars to see what it's
like to sing in a larger chorus.

Bay has been around barbershop music for most of his life. His father,
Park Bay, was in a Columbia chorus years ago, and after that group
disbanded, the two joined a group in Boonville. In 1997, Park Bay was
one of the founding members of the Chordbusters. One of the group's
goals is to preserve barbershop's chord-based style of music and
down-to-earth lyrics.

Chuck Bay said the group means a lot to its regular members.

"Some of our guys like to joke that it's cheaper than therapy," Chuck
Bay said. "It's kind of stress relief. If you're singing songs, it's
hard to be angry. It certainly puts people in a better mood."

MU student Patrick Lockwood has been involved with the group since
fall of 2006, and at age 20 is the youngest member of the
Chordbusters. He agrees that for men of all ages, the activity is
relaxing and one he hopes more people will join.

"The whole purpose of barbershop is to have fun and enjoy singing with
other guys," Lockwood said. "It's not about performing, It's not about
competitions. The focus here is just to enjoy four-part harmony with
at least four guys, if not more."

Yes Hugh, it was wonderful… absolutely awesome! If you’d been there Saturday night you would have left crying as we all did. The Ambassadors were doing their thing and Jim Henry invited the Heart of America to join them on stage in honor of Jim Bagby. Imagine that! Close to 300 singers on stage… then he invited everyone who had ever sung with the HOA on stage. Then he invited Jim Bagby to direct them. Jim, who was already crying by this time, tried valiantly but couldn’t do it because he (as we all were) was so emotionally touched and the grand finale… he invited everyone in the audience to sing! There must have been close to 2,000 singers! It brings tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat just telling you about it! I simply don’t have words to describe what I felt and heard.

I’m ready to go to the next one!

Charles

Sugar and spice make everything nice

With the meat we like corn or beans and fries;
We'll take home styrofoam to hold the sides.

Problems: the original song isn't well known outside barbershop

I thought the second verse was even riskier:

She thinks she deserves a little kiss or two.
She will love some flowers, sweets, and jewelry too.
All these guys around here really envy you.
(spoken) Later on this evening she's got plans for you

(sung)  But this song's G rated so we can't tell you. (out to the audience)

I think I remember a rule that if school is called off in Columbia because of bad weather, then there's no rehearsal for the Boonslick Chordbusters that night.  Is that the rule, or am I just remembering what we do at the First Baptist Church?

Hypersonix didn't make the top 10. We put together a really good product, but
it just wasn't quite what the judges wanted. We have the DVD of our

Thanks for giving us some time on Thursday; the feedback we received helped us

Chuck & Hugh,
I'm sending this message to you since I don't have any one else from the Chordbusters' email.  If you would like to give me an email of someone that is in charge I will start contacting them instead of you.

Today was the second time since we put in the security system that the Door to the Fellowship Hall has been left propped open.  The door is programmed to be unlocked from 6 pm to 9 pm.  You can always get out if it is locked you just can't get back in.  It you are going to prop it open you need to remember to close it when you leave.  If there would be a fire and the insurance company finds out that the door was propped open the insurance company wouldn't cover it.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

If we have any aspiring graphic artists in the group, I thought a
tasteful button that says "ask me about singing valentines" would be a
nice thing to wear for the next couple of weeks (especially if I had a
ready supply of matching business cards). If it were sufficiently
attractive and tasteful, I'd even wear it to go shopping at Super
Wal-Mart, which is where I come into contact with the most humans in a
given week.

And remember, when a potential customer asks for the price, always
refer them to Rolla Grace. :-)

Terry, I sent Chuck an email last week and have not heard back.  He is so busy...  Anyway, Jack is having his 60th birthday Nov 3.  Some of his family would like to have a quartet sing for him at his job at Simonson in Jeff City.  They asked me to look into this.  How can I make these arrangements and how much does it cost?  You can email me here at MACC, judithd@... so that I can keep this a secret.

Thanks, Judy
