"Look well to the fire in your own souls, for the tendency of the fire
is to go out." - Aristotle
I'm kind of tired of hearing about the "economic slowdown" or the
"down economy" (hey you should have seen the line around the new Olive
Garden in our town tonight!). But we do also have friends who have
been laid off, so I know times are tough for some.
In these troubled times more than any other, we have to keep our
creative 'fires' burning.
It's easy to let fear and hopelessness take hold, and not stoke those
embers that once burned so brightly we felt like God was inspiring us
NOT so softly and tenderly, but loudly and clearly.
This is more than one of those, "hey if you're not able to do it all
the way, at least do SOMETHING" emails.
I was just in Tallahassee, FL, working with a new band. These young
guys are totally sold out to the Lord and just fired up. (The kind of
fired up you can be when you're in high school and life is still kinda
free! ;)
But the energy and devotion to what they are doing is just tremendous.
It the kind of infectious, creative energy that makes me want to come
home, write blogs, write songs, and work on 40 different projects at a
time.
Oh wait, I do that anyway...
But seriously, I think that's why I love doing what I do so much. The
folks who have me work for them are usually VERY fired up about what
they are doing.
They are finally getting to the work they have always felt called to do.
They are so excited to be working on a recording that can help them
make music and ministry a steady part of their lives.
And that makes me excited.
I have more than several new projects in which the excitement is just
brimming over with the possibilities of what could come from what we
create.
You know that feeling don't you? You feel it now while you're reading
this.
But how do you get there to "have what they're having"?
Before you think of the reasons you CAN'T do anything, stay with the
excitement for a minute. What if you could? What if you could be
coming to Nashville, or working with a producer and company on your
music and ministry? Building something bigger than what you do now?
Stoke that fire. Write a song. Dream a bit for a minute. It won't cost
a thing.
Open up a text document on your computer and write down a list of
songs, ideas, goals.
Burn baby.
Get your journal out. Or go buy a journal. Write down your goals and
dreams.
I have this question I always ask myself when I'm bored or alone.
"What is your goal?"
It's not always the same. (Right now it's get debt-free, but that's
because that pesky Dave Ramsey is sitting on my shoulder.)
But DO something.
Maybe you just email me and say "I want to do something. The fire is
there but I don't know what to DO!"
And I'm sure you're afraid to DO, because The Obama says things are
bad. (Thanks for that oh great Orator!)
But never mind The Obama. The power of Christ compels you!
Seriously. The power and love and grace and mercy and all the gifts
bestowed on you by our beautiful Savior Jesus. He is waiting. Waiting
for you to light that fire.
So light 'em if ya got 'em!
