Hi all, it's Shane. Tonight is First Friday in downtown York and we're hosting a
free concert at the art gallery with Philadelphia musician, One String Willie.
Come on out...it starts at 7. THIS SHOW IS APPROPRIATE FOR YOU TO BRING THE
KIDS, TOO. Here's the full details:
CigarBoxNation.com presents an evening of deep blues featuring the one-string
virtuoso, David "One String Willie" Williams. The intimate show within the art
gallery is this Friday at 7pm and is free and open to the public. Expect old
Delta blues songs, skid row lullabies and even Southern Gospel...all played on a
one-string diddley bow (the oldest known slide guitar in blues history).
Tonight at 7pm - YorkArts art gallery 10 N. Mail St., York PA (just down the
block from the White Rose Bar and Grill)
About "One String Willie": Several years ago, David Williams built a cigar box
guitar for around twenty bucks and was amazed at just how much fun he could have
with it. His fun multiplied when York musician, Shane Speal led him to
recordings by an obscure blues legend, Eddie "One String" Jones who played deep
blues on a "diddley bow," a primitive single string slide instrument. That's
when Williams' alter ego One String Willie came into being. The first public
performance by One String Willie is documented in the PBS film, Songs Inside The
Box.
"One String Willie is probably the greatest blues diddley bow performer in the
world," claims Speal. "I've seen him play complex blues, folk and classical
arrangements on an instrument that's just a broomwire string, 2x4 plank and a
couple nails. It's something you have to see for yourself."
