YEAH!!! HELL YEAH!!! Now THAT'S the type of innovation we need in
here! Way to go BUMONTHEROD! I love the hollow neck idea and
sympathetic strings. Great job.

Where do I get 'em?  Well, first I go to my local beer distributer and buy some beer.  Then I come home and wait for the kids to go to bed.  Then the Missus and I grab the bottle opener and head for the back porch...

glug glug.

Then I take the caps and stash them in an empty cigar box.

ps.  I would NEVER do something sneaky like buying 1000 bottle caps on eBay...

I figured maybe ya just slipped some bartender a $5 to keep a
seperate trashcan just for bottle caps..

I drink a bit of beer here and there, but I imagine it'd take a year
of Sunday's to drink that much beer..

For those of you that live in the Memphis area, there's a group of
folks that meets up on the Town Square in Collierville on Friday
nights (when the weather's good) to pick.. Mostly Bluegrass 'n
Gospel, but there's the occasional blues tune that rears it's head..
All accoustic, so if ya gotta plug in to be heard, ya might wanna
borrow something to play.. There are a few old timers that play
mandolins, banjos and gut-bucket's they've built themselves, but
haven't seen any CBG's out there... Yet.. Still trying to refine
the one I built last weekend to actually make it playable in
public.. String action is WAY high and I ain't a slide player.
Tuned it up GDg and fretted it diatonically with toothpicks.. Just
to much string tension on that 1x2 poplar neck to be playable..
Thinking about the next being a four string standard tuned DGBe with
a 2x2 neck using REAL frets and a full chromatic scale up to about
the 9th fret.. I seldom get out of the cowboy chords into the money
frets anyway.

Anyroads.. I was surprised by how loud the little sucker actually
was.. Has about the same volume as the Martin Backpacker I drag
around on the bike with me.

What about using 6 strings but using another set the GBe treble stings
(traditional guitar tuning) in the EAD positions and tuning however you
want just up an octive on the bottom end..

I've got a 6-string Guit-jo I string up like this, because even LIGHT
strings are just to heavy on the bottom side.. Gives it an interesting
sound, but makes it kinda weird trying to play traditionally tuned
songs.. Tend to just pick (not strum) chord notes at random with a
flat pick and get a semi-finger style Travis picking sound.

am guessing super slinkys or gut strings might work . just an idea tom

The box is smallish so I am thinking the resonance is held back
considerably. I will try a couple of non wound strings.........These
were on a piezo bridge.....

I've been in Memphis for about 15 years now and this is the first
group I've stumbled across that just hang out and Jam.. Some of 'em
get together almost every night somewhere to play.. Monday's at the
Flight Club in Millington, Tuesday's at Yarbrough's Music, Thursday's
somewhere down in Southaven. Friday's in Collierville, Saturday
afternoon at the Lord of Life Church on Poplar Pike.. Then there's
another group that hangs out at Celtic Crossing in Cooper Young,
about twice a month on random Tuesday nights playing old Irish
tunes.. BelAire Grill on Macon Rd at Sycamore Veiw has an open mic
Blues jam a few random nights a month.. There have got to be plenty
of random jams that just happen around town, but to be honest I guess
I really ain't part of that crowd.. I've mellowed at the early age
of 37 into mostly accoustic folky stuff.. Leave the drums and amps
on the stage..(no offense to drummers out there)

Several years back I was doing burglar alarms and was wiring up a new
house for one of the Fogelman grandkids and his new wife.. I was
talking with her about all the crime in the area and she told me a
couple of folks were shot that past weekend in front of where she
used to work down the street a ways. I asked her where that was she
said down at the corner of White Station and Summer (Gold Club)..
Now I"ve got nothing against stippers, in fact some of the best
looking naked women I've known are/were strippers, but I still kinda
find it ironic and funny that a family as iconic to this area as the
Fogelman's are married a stripper into the family..

I generally go down there about once a year to remind myself why I
don't go down there very often.. Last time we were down there was
about a year ago the see Tenlsey Ellis play at BB's.. Ok actually it
was to see a friend of our that plays bass for him and works with my
wife at Bumpus,.. Burr.. The Evil One.. Couldn't beleive how much
the place had changed.. Handy Park is now walled off so if you want
the see the free music in the park you have to PAY to see it..
They've pulled up the old bricks to repave.. They ACTUALLY PAVED WITH
ASPHALT, then scored it to look like bricks and stained it brick
red.. WTF.. I imagine they could have pulled the bricks up and
sold 'em for $15 or so each on EBay and made some money on the deal,
but instead the ripped them up with a street grinder and turned them
into dust.

In geneal Beale and the entire downtown area is just to much for
me.. To many people and to much noise.. I know some folks did that,
and good on 'em.. Just ain't my kinda thing.. Would rather hang out
in some small quite mountain town I guess.. Makes me wonder how the
hell I ended up living 2 blocks off Germantown Parkway out in
Cordova..

Having played a few times on Beale recently, I had to chime in.

As a musician, you should know this before playing Beale St. 90% of
the people walking up and down the block are white, 90% of the
musicians are white. This is not the way this street was ever
intended to be, history is pretty clear here.

If you want to appease the masses on Beale St, play 12 bar blues,
and Elvis songs. That's it, standard 12 bar blues, and any Elvis
song. No one cares much, or wants to hear anything else, and it's
obvious.

Later

Stacy

I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing you guys at Red Lion!

My tentative set list includes:

A Different Guitar
Long Distance Call-Muddy Waters
Write Me A Few Lines—Fred McDowell
Just to Be With You—Muddy Waters
Love in Vain—Robert Johnson
Worried Life—Fred McDowell
Death Letter—Son House
I'm Gonna Live the Life I Sing About
Shine on Me—Traditional, Blind Willie Johnson
Troubled About My Soul/Daniel Saw the Stone
Where Shall I Be—A. P. Carter
New Amazing Grace
Hand Me Down My Walking Cane
You Can't Catch Me—Chuck Berry

I am also still working this out (and whittling it down some).
Instruments: two 4-string CBGs and a 3-string electric walking cane
(guess which song).

By the way, I built a diddly-bow kind of like One-String Jones' out of
a 2x6, two 16 penny nails, a piece of scrap 1x2, some broom-wire, a
paint can lid and a jelly jar, and bought a half-pint of Jack Daniels
so I could have a heavy slide. I have some paint cans that I am trying
to empty to make the loudspeaker. The pictures on the album were very
instructive. This sucker sounds way nastier than my CBG broom-stick
diddley bow! I like One-String's version of Rollin' and Tumblin at
LOT! That *is* a good album!

My guitar buddies' wives have expressed the wish that I would get them
interested in these cheaper instruments...

Regards, David

I think for the most part you're spot on with the blues and Elvis
observation..

I know of one at least exception.. I wish I knew I was sure about
the band here, but I think it was Delta Blue, a local bluegrass band
that was contacted by the folks at BB Kings to come play a set at the
Beale Street Music fest a year or so back.. They (DB) told the folks
at BB's "you do know we're a Bluegrass band right".. They paused for
a moment and replied "well that'll be different, we haven't had a
bluegrass band before".. DB asked them if they usderstood they
strictly did old gospel tunes and they said it should be fine. DB
ended up with the 10:30 - 11:30 time slot on Saturday night at BB's
and they brought the entire place to it's feet and then brought the
place down. They said the only thing the chairs in the place were
being used for was to stand on so you could get a better view of the
stage..

I think folks go down to Beale looking for something, ANYTHING
different than they hear on the radio day in and day out.. You don't
hear much blues or bluegrass on the radio and thank God you don't
hear a lot of Elvis on the radio.

My guitar buddies' wives have expressed the wish that I would get them
interested in these cheaper instruments...

They won't be so happy when they go to their cupboards and find their pie pans, cake pans, jelly jars, etc all missing! Then they'll have to start tearing instruments apart every time they want to cook!  :-(

I'm really looking forward to this.  I entered a talent competition at a nudist camp by sending in some of my songs.....I got picked as 1 of 6 finalists....but I had to play the friday before Red lion and that saturday if I won fri nite.
I cancelled to go to Red Lion.   Yes...crowds of naked people want me!!   But I'm coming to Red Lion instead.
My set list includes
         Hard Life
         Broken Blues
         Worn out Jennie
         Hoo De Doo
         All the pretty Horses
         Sweet Polly Cythemia
         Holdin' Tank
         Shoot Her in the Head
         Leave Me Alone (Olsen Twins)
         Hot to Go

Note>  I'm refraining from singing "Sally Was a Whore"  and "If I had a Handgun" because they are possibly too evil for a family crowd.    I do have a Syd Barrett /  Nicky Sudden tribute called "Thanks for the Life" which might be ready.

I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing you guys at Red Lion!

My tentative set list includes:

A Different Guitar
Long Distance Call-Muddy Waters
Write Me A Few Lines—Fred McDowell
Just to Be With You—Muddy Waters
Love in Vain—Robert Johnson
Worried Life—Fred McDowell
Death Letter—Son House
I'm Gonna Live the Life I Sing About
Shine on Me—Traditional, Blind Willie Johnson
Troubled About My Soul/Daniel Saw the Stone
Where Shall I Be—A. P. Carter
New Amazing Grace
Hand Me Down My Walking Cane
You Can't Catch Me—Chuck Berry

I am also still working this out (and whittling it down some).
Instruments: two 4-string CBGs and a 3-string electric walking cane
(guess which song).

By the way, I built a diddly-bow kind of like One-String Jones' out of
a 2x6, two 16 penny nails, a piece of scrap 1x2, some broom-wire, a
paint can lid and a jelly jar, and bought a half-pint of Jack Daniels
so I could have a heavy slide. I have some paint cans that I am trying
to empty to make the loudspeaker. The pictures on the album were very
instructive. This sucker sounds way nastier than my CBG broom-stick
diddley bow! I like One-String's version of Rollin' and Tumblin at
LOT! That *is* a good album!

My guitar buddies' wives have expressed the wish that I would get them
interested in these cheaper instruments...

Regards, David

I'll be performing most of my set on my TurboDiddley and
> battered Macanudo. I may also do a cover of One-String Sam's "I Need
> $100" on a diddley bow. Other songs on my tentative set list are:
> "You Don't Love Me Anymore" Gerry Thompson cover
> "Love or Death" Doctor Oakroot cover
> "I Got the Goat In Me" Johnny Lowebow cover
> "Slow Motion"
> "Jesus Is Coming Soon"
> "These Frustrating Blues"
> "Acoustic X-Ray Spex"
> "Star Spangled Banner"
> "Voodoo Child " and "I Don't Live Today" Hendrix covers

You guys just gave meaning (for me) to that Steely Dan line...

"nothing but blues and Elvis and somebody else's favorite song"

I have never had the musical experience you describe at the Beale in the day, but it certainly set my imagination running.

Thanks!
