Today In Blues - Dec 8

     © 2004 L.W. "Junior" Jackson

On this 8th day of December in 1947 Southern Rock vocalist and
keyboard player Gregg Allman was born in Nashville, TN.
     ------------ --------- -----

Blues saxaphonist Johnny Board was born on this day in 1919 in
     Chicago.
Johnny played with Lionel Hampton, Wes Montgomery, Fontella Bass,
Bobby "Blue" Bland, BB King, Johnny Ace, Teresa Brewer, Gatemouth
Brown, and Floyd Dixon, among many others.
     ------------ --------- -------

Blues and Boogie Woogie pianist and vocalist Cleo Brown was born on
this day in 1903 in Meridian, MS.
Known as a "Female Fats Waller", Cleo was a popular Blues
entertainer during the 30s and 40s. She got religion and
faded from the Blues scene, but re-emerged in the 80s.
     ------------ --------- ----

Piedmont Blues guitarist and pianist Henry "Rufe" Johnson was born on
this day in 1908 in Union, SC.
There is only one CD of Rufe in print, "The Union County Flash" on
     Trix Records.
     ------------ --------- -------

Rock singer Jim Morrison of The Doors was born on this day in 1943 in
     Melbourne, FL.
     ------------ --------- ---------

The great Hammond B-3 organ player Jimmy Smith was born on this day in
     1925 in Norristown, PA.
     ------------ --------- ---------

West Coast Blues guitarist Hollywood Fats (Michael Mann) died on this
day in 1986 in L.A. CA at age 32.
Hollywood Fats died before he was recognized for his undeniable
talent. Larry Taylor, with forty years experience as a top Blues
bassist and member of "The Hollywood Fats Band", calls Fats 'The
Greatest Blues guitarist". The only CD The Hollywood Fats Band has
out is on Black Top. There is a release of studio sessions, but Fats
can be heard on The James Harmon Band`s "Extra Napkins" and Mo'
Napkins" and on William Clarke`s "Hittin` Heavy", "Blues From LA"
and "Tip Of The Top". Hollywood Fats is also on Rod
     Piazza`s "Harpburn" and "Vintage Live:1975".
     ------------ --------- --

Chicago Blues harmonica legend Big Walter "Shakey" Horton died on this
day in 1981 in Chicago at age 63.
Arguably one of the best of the post-war Chicago harp players,
Shakey`s shy demeanor and unwillingness to be a bandleader caused him
to gain less recognition than his peers such as Little Walter and
Sonny Boy 2. Horton has recorded with some of the greats of Chicago
Blues, including Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Rush, Johnny Shines,
Tampa Red, and many others. His work on Jimmy Rogers` "Walkin` By
Myself" is considered by many to be the quintessential Chicago Blues
harp song. Willie Dixon called Horton "the best Blues harmonica
player I ever heard". If you don`t own any Big Walter, start
with "Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell" on Alligator, and "Fine
Cuts" on Blind Pig. If you are a Big Walter fan looking for more,
try "Memphis Recordings:1951" on Kent Records, or "Johnny Shines With
     Big Walter Horton" on Testament.
     ------------ --------- -------

New Orleans Jazz and pre-war Chicago Blues pianist Richard M. Jones
died on this day in 1945 in Chicago at age 53.
Jones was the composer of the Blues classic "Trouble In Mind". He
had an interesting career, beginning with a Jazz background in New
Orleans, and ending in Chicago with the Delta-gone-urban Blues sound
of 30s and 40s Chicago. His complete recorded works are available on
2 CDs ""1923-1927" and "1927-1944" on the Classics label.
     ------------ --------- --------

Jump Blues pianist and vocalist Julia Lee died on this day in 1958 in
Kansas City, MO at age 56.
Lee was a mainstay on the K.C Blues scene during the 40s and 50s.
She recorded frequently for Columbia from 1944-1950. Fans of Jump
Blues should check out "Julia Lee and Her Boyfriends" on JSP,
or "Kansas City Star" on Bear Family Records.
     ------------ --------- --------

Guitarist and songwriter John Lennon died on this day in 1980 in NYC,
     NY at age 40.
     ------------ --------- -------

Blues drummer Willie "Rough-Dried" Williams died on this day in 1988
     at age 66.

On this 7th day of December in 1924 Rockabilly bassist, vocalist and
bandleader Boyd Bennet was born in Muscle Shoals, AL.
Bennet scored a Country hit in 1952 with the song "Time" and then re-
vamped his style by adding Blues and R&B to his repetoire and
changing the name of his band from "The Southlanders" to "The
Rockets" and in 1955 released "Seventeen", one of the first Rock n
Roll hit records. He recorded many more singles that were regional
succeses, but never attained the status of "Seventeen".
Bennet retired in the late fifties and started a successful
     manufacturing company.

     1938 in Swifton, MS.
     ------------ --------- --

Vocalist, songwriter, and producer Big Ike Darby was born on this day
     in 1933 in Philadelphia, MS.
Darby was an R&B and lues icon in Mobile, AL in the 50s, 60s and
70s. He sidelined as a DJ in the fifties, and owned a record store in
the 60s and 70s, while playing regional clubs. He scored several
regional hits, includng "Cryin` The Blues" and "Your Love Is Like a
     Checker Game".
     ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

     Hattiesburgh, MS.
The piano of Blind John Davis was featured on scores of Blues
records in the 30s and 40s. He was "house" pianist at Bluebird
Records and recorded with Tampa Red, John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson,
Big Bill Broonzy and many others. He accompianied Big Bill as the
first Blues act to tour Europe in 1952. Davis returned to Europe
often right up until the eighties and most of his solo recordings
were recorded there. In 1978, Davis released one of his best albums
on the Alligator label, "Stompin` On A Saturday Night", but be sure
to check out Document`s "Complete Recorded Works; Vol 1: 1938-1942".
     ------------ --------- ------

Blues harmonica player Johnnie Dyer was born on this day in 1938 in
     Rolling Fork, MS.
Dyer has 2 CDs on Black Top, "Listen Up" and "Shake It", and one on
Blind Pig, "Jukin". Also check out "Rolling Fork Revisited"
with Mark Hummel. Dyer has also recorded with Rick Holmstrom, R.L.

in 1903 in Taylor ( Tyler?) , TX.
     ------------ --------

Blues guitarist Mager Johnson was born on this day in 1905 in Crystal
     Springs, MS.
     ------------ -------

Harmonica player Johnnie Mars was born on this day in 1942 in Laurens,
     SC.
Mars is a relative unknown in the U.S.A. He was popular on the San
Francisco Blues scene and then moved to England, where he became a
     star.
He has been a featured soloist with the British New Wave band
Bananarama, and has several critically acclaimed CDs, including "Life
On Mars", "Oakland Boogie", and "King of The Blues Harp".
     ------------ --------

Pre-War and Piedmont Blues vocalist Irene Scruggs was born on this day
     in 1901 in MS.
Irene Scruggs was an established Blues star in St. Louis for many
years. She recorded many wonderful Blues records, the best of
which were with Blind Blake and Lonnie Johnson. Her first recordings
were with the bandleader Clarence Williams. Fans of Pre-War Piedmont
Blues will love the Wolf Set "Blind Blake; The Accompanist" .
     ------------ --------- ------

Pianist, songwriter, producer and actor Tom Waits was born on this day
     in 1949 in Ponoma, CA.
Waits cannot be pidgeonholed into one particular category, but he
enjoys tremendous respect among even die-hard Blues fans. His
songwriting is phenomenal, especially his gin-soaked early recordings.
Often called "the last of the beatniks", Waits has also acted in a
number of Francis Ford Coppala films.
Check out "Closing Time", or "Nighthawks At The Diner". or his

     ------------ --------- ---

On this day in 1967, Otis Redding recorded "Sittin' on the Dock of the
     Bay".
I remember when the record came out, I was working as a
dishwasher in a diner north of Boston that had one of those "flip
book" jukeboxes at each booth, it was a nickel a song, six for a
quarter. I`d put a quarter in and play "Dock of The Bay" six times.
     Drove the waitresses nuts........ .

Greetings All,
In honor of Jimi's up coming birthday on November 27 I have posted some
rare in studio shots on my website this week. With the break up of
the Jimi Hendrix Experience in the Summer of 1969 Jimi flew Billy Cox
to New York for some studio jams and recording work on new material.
Billy told me a few years ago about a photographer that was present
in the studio and at (was has become known as) Shokan House as well as
well as a few concert dates. His name was Willis Hogan. Billy
suggested I look him up and I did with the help of a good friend who
lived near him in New York. The result was some rare in studio images
that document the first time Jimi and Billy got together in the studio
post Nashville when they were both struggling musicians just out of
the army. Willis Hogan is now deceased so these photos are a tribute
to him as well as Jimi and Billy. Go to my site and click on
"In The Studio" and enjoy http://www.jimihendrixonline.com

Greetings Everyone,
It is a little off topic but I thought this might be of interest.
Yesterday afternoon Nashville hosted it's 5th annual Walk of Fame
Inductions, this year inducting Trace Adkins, Randy Travis, Elvis,
and Little Richard among others. I attended the event and approached
one of several very large security guys surrounding Little Richard
and showed him a photo from my collection of Little Richard and Jimi
Hendrix circa 1965 and asked if I could present it to him. Long
story short, he took me round to see Richard after the event and he
was very gracious in accepting the photo and kindly signed my copy
writing,
        To David,
         God Cares,
       Little Richard

He then said "God bless you young man" and was on his way.
You can see the photo he signed on my website by going to
http://www.jimihendrixonline.com and going to the "autographs"
link and scrolling down.
                                                     David

     Today in Blues 11/6

On this 6th day of November in 1949 acoustic Blues gutarist and
songwriter Rory Block was born in NYC, NY. Block is one of America`s
top acoustic Blueswomen and a fine guitarist, slide guitarist and
     gifted songwriter.
As a young teen, she befriended guitarist Stephan Grossman and the
two would often travel to The Bronx and visit Reverand Gary Davis.
At 15, she left home in true `60s style and traveled to Mississippi,
where she learned Delta Blues at the feet of Skip James and
Mississippi John Hurt, her biggest influence. She settled in
Berkeley and honed her guitar skills and released "I`m In Love" in
     1975.
She became a road warrior, often playing 250 dates a year. She
gained national recognition in 1992 when she won a NAIRD award, (and
again in `94 and `97). She won the first of 3 WC Handy Awards in
1996 for Best Traditional Album for "When A Woman Gets The Blues".
She has about 15 CDs out on the Rounder label.
Check out "Best Blues and Originals" or "Gone Woman Blues" and
you`ll be back for more. In 2003 she released the critically
acclaimed "Last Far Deal" on Telarc records. Also on Telarc "From the
Dust(2/22/2005) .Later recordings include "Rory Block in
Concert"(1/1/ 2004), The Lady and Mr. Johnson on Rykodisc (8/15/2006)
and I'm in Love(Bonus Track) on Airmail (4/30/2007).
     ------------ -------

Blues guitarist Boston Blackie (Bennie Joe Houston) was born on this
day in 1943 in Panola, AL.
     ------------ --------

Chicago slide guitarist Joe Carter was born on this day in 1927 in
Midland, GA. Carter is one of the truly great unsung heroes of the
     1950`s Chicago Club scene.
A disciple of Elmore James and Muddy Waters (Waters lent Carter the
money to buy his first electric guitar), Joe formed his first band
with guitarist Smokey Smothers and harp player Lester Davenport, and
the band was a mainstay on the Chicago club scene, but unfortunately
     never recorded.
Carter was suspicious of Record companies and felt he could make
more money on his own in the clubs. This was a true shame.
Carter re-emerged in the 70s and finaly recorded his lone album on
The Barrelhouse label called "Mean and Evil Blues".
This excellent album is available on CD.
Carter was forced to retire in the early 80s due to throat cancer.
     ------------ ---------

Acoustic Country guitarist and songwriter extrodinaire Guy Clark was
born on this day in 1941 in Monshans, TX.
Clark plays in a Blues and Bluegrass influenced acoustic country
style and is considered by his peers to be one of Country music`s
     premier songwriters.
Check out "Old #1" or "Cold Dog Soup" on Sugar Hill Records, "Boats
To Build" on Electra, "Craftsman" on Philo, or "Essential" on RCA.

John Morello, drummer for Garry and The Moodswingers, was born on
this day in 1966 in Chicago.
     ------------ --------- ------

Guitarist Doug Sahm was born on this day in 1941 in San Antonio, TX.
You can`t put a label on Doug Sahm. He was a knowledgable music
historian and a veteran performer comfortable playing Blues, R&B,
Rock, Country, Western Swing, Tex-Mex and Cajun music.
Sahm began his recording career in the 50s, but scored a national
hit when his band, The Sir Douglas Quintet released "Mendocino".
Among Sahm`s most essential Blues albums are "Hell of a Spell" on
Takoma and the Grammy nominated "The Last Real Texas Blues Band" on
     Antone`s Records.
Sahm died of heart failure while on the road in 1999.

FRESH CROP OF CONTENDERS FOR 2009 MAPLE BLUES AWARD NOMINATIONS
- JEFF HEALEY BLUES BAND LEADS THE WAY

TORONTO - TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28TH, 2008 - Blues fans will be thrilled
with the
many new faces filling the ballot for this year's Twelfth Annual Maple
Blues
Awards, Canada's national award program that promotes and recognizes
outstanding achievement in blues music. Nominees from Atlantic Canada
to BC
have been announced for 2009 and voting begins online at www.mapleblues.ca
from November 1st, 2008 at 1:00 am (NFLD) until 11:59 pm (PT) December
6th, 2008. The Gala Awards Ceremony will take place in Toronto at 8:30
pm on Monday, January 19th, 2009.

Although there is a strong showing from all across this blues land of
ours,
of the sixteen Maple Blues Awards categories, the late guitarist
extraordinaire Jeff Healey and his blues band lead the nominations with a
total of seven - including Entertainer, Electric Artist, Guitarist and
Recording of the Year (for his posthumous album Mess of Blues). Healey's
seasoned accompanists Al Webster, Dave Murphy and Alec Fraser are each
nominated in their respective instrumental categories.

Barrelhouse blues pianist Julian Fauth and veteran act Downchild are
next in
line, earning four nominations apiece. Fauth's honours include one in the
recording category for his current album, Ramblin' Son, while Downchild's
include two in instrumental categories for Michael Fonfara and Pat Carey.
Following closely with three nominations each are Maritimer and
"funkabilly-blues-soulman" Garret Mason, Toronto's powerhouse blues
vocalists Treasa Levasseur and Paul Reddick and Western axeman Amos
Garrett
(including his horn player Dave Babcock).

Fresh new faces not seen on the ballot last year are predominant in the
instrumental categories: Seventeen of the 30 nominees are new, including
JW-Jones and Curley Bridges. Not to mention New Artist of the Year
contenders Daddy Long Legs, Keith Hallett, Marshall Lawrence, Monkey Junk
and Sojourners. Multiple Drummer of the Year recipient, Maureen Brown, is
also back in the race.

Returning this year are Atlantic blues faves Thom Swift, who garnered two
nods, Tom Easley (Hot Toddy) and Geoff Arsenault (Morgan Davis/Thom
Swift).
Montreal is well represented, with recognitions going to Ray Bonneville
(with two nods), Guy Belanger, Stephen Barry, Bob Walsh and Michael Jerome
Browne, all with one each and last year's Maple Blues host Dawn Tyler
Watson, with two. Ontario raises up past Maple Blues winners Jack de
Keyzer,
Shakura S'Aida, Suzie Vinnick, Carlos Del Junco and Chris Whiteley, among
others. The West has an increased presence this year, with distinctions
going to Big Dave McLean - who has been making a big impact on the music
scene of late - receiving two noms, as well as Amos Garrett, Dave Babcock,
Harry Manx, bassist Keith Picot and drummer Chris Nordquist of The
Twisters.

Of special note is the 2009 BLUES BOOSTER OF THE YEAR AWARD (selected
by the
Toronto Blues Society Board of Directors) which will go to the
affectionately known "Professor of Rock n' Roll" Rob Bowman for his
outstanding contributions to the Canadian Blues industry. Bowman is a
five-time Grammy Award nominee, and one-time winner (in 1996 for Best
Album
Notes for his 47,000-word monograph accompanying the 10-CD boxed set
of The
Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles, Vol. 3: 1972-1975, which he co-produced).
He also pioneered popular music studies at York University. He lectures,
publishes and broadcasts in many areas of music, from country, R & B,
blues
and gospel to reggae, rap and funk. He has written liner notes for
dozens of
recordings including many of those by blues artists such as Colin Linden,
and regularly authors, produces and advises on major documentary and CD
reissue projects for record companies in Europe and North America.

The funky academic and music spokesperson has many broadcast credits as
well, including a five-part radio series on the history of Canadian
popular
music and frequent guest spots on CBC Radio's Definitely Not the Opera.
Besides being a musician himself, Bowman has also authored a book called
Soulsville, U.S.A. - The Story of Stax Records (1997), about the legendary
Memphis-based record label. Upon hearing the news of his award, Bowman had
this to say, "For years I have admired the work done by those behind the
Maple Blues Awards in acknowledging the great blues music made by Canadian
musicians and I am extremely honoured to have been chosen to receive the
"Blues Booster of the Year Award."

All nominees are selected by a distinguished panel of blues experts from
across Canada, and winners are selected by the votes of Canadian blues
fans.
Voting begins online at www.mapleblues.ca from November 1st, 2008 at
1:00 am (NFLD) until 11:59 pm (PT) December 6th, 2008.

OK, Tom... have a sit and I'll try to make it as simple as possible.
Let's take the E tone as the basis for this.
The 1-5-7 progression, as you call it, comes from the position in the
frets of the guitar. This is 1 is E, 5 is A, and 7 is B... right?

The I-IV-V progression comes FROM THE SCALE, and the basis for all
the scales is the C tone
I   =C
II  =D
III =E
IV  =F
V   =G
VI  =A
VII =B
VIII=C (When you repeat it is the I of the higher or the octave of
the previous)
This is the natural scale as we know it. Well, its actual name is
DIATONIC SCALE.
But then, what happens with the flats and sharps?
They are "inserts" between the tones, or more appropriately called
INTERVALS.
I   =C
(C# / Db)
II  =D
(D# / Eb)
III =E
IV  =F
(F# / Gb)
V   =G
(G# / Ab)
VI  =A
(A# / Bb)
VII =B
VIII=C

That is why in C, the tones are I-C, IV-F and V-G
Now apply this to the other tones without forgetting the intervals,
and you will have the rest. EG in E

I   =E
(F)
II  =F# / Gb
(G)
III =G# / Ab
IV  =A
(A# / Bb)
V   =B
(C)
VI  =C# / Db
(D)
VII =D# / Eb
VIII=E

Hope you may use it...

the forties and was popular throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and,
later, Chicago. There is a fine CD of his work on Yazoo, "Jailhouse
Blues"
------------------------------------------------------------------

Modern Chicago Blues guitarist Billy Flynn was born on this day in
1956 in Green Bay, WI.
Flynn is an established Chicago Blues guitarist who first made his
mark with the Chicago based band Mississippi Heat. Flynn has 7 solo
CDs, mostly on the Easy Baby label, and has recorded and / or toured

-----------------------------------------------------------

Piedmont Blues guitarist Joshua "Peg-Leg" Howell died on this day in
1966 in Atlanta, GA.
Peg Leg was one of the earliest Piedmont Blues artists to record and
helped bridge the gap between Ragtime and the 12 bar fingerpicking
style of the Piedmont region.
Joshua got his nickname after being shot in the leg with a shotgun
by his brother-in-law during an argument, which unfortunately
resulted in amputation.
Peg Leg was a regular performer on Atlanta`s famed Decatur Street
and sold moonshine to supplement his income, an offense which landed
him a year in jail in 1925.
Upon his release Howell began recording for Columbia. His vast
repetoire led to many recordings, but Columbia pulled the plug in 1929
when the Depresson hit. Howell returned to playing Decatur St. and
eventually faded into obscurity.
He was re-discovered by the Testament label in 1963 and, at age 75,
Howell recorded his first new material in over 40 years.
Check out "Peg Leg Howell and Eddie", Volumes 1 and 2, on Document.
Peg Leg also recorded with Blind Willie McTell. His songs have
been covered by Blind Willie, Brownie McGhee, Koerner, Ray & Glover,
and Paul Rishell & Annie Raines.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

R&B and Blues vocalist and songwriter extrodinaire Percy Mayfield died
on this day in 1984 in L.A. CA at age 63.
Mayfield was a masterful vocalist and songwriter who rose to stardom
with a #1 hit, "Please Send Me Someone To Love" in 1950.
After being severely injured in a car crash in 1952, Mayfield relied
more on songwriting. He became Ray Charles' favorite songwriter and
penned many of Charles' best records, including "Hit The Road, Jack".
He continued recording for Specialty and Chess
Records in the 50s, and was signed to Charles' Tangerine label in the
60s.
Mayfield has several fine CDs in print, many on the Specialty label.
Highly recommended is "Poet Of The Blues" and "Memory Pain".

Piedmont Blues harmonica player Nat Riddles died on this day in
1991 in Richmond, VA at age 39.

On this first day of August in 1953 guitarist, vocalist and songwriter
Robert Cray was born in Columbus, GA.
Although panned by some as a yuppie Blues wanna-be, Cray definitely
has the talent and vision to help carry The Blues into the 21st
century. He is an immensely popular artist that carries The Blues to
a wider audience, and is in part responsible for the contemporary
Blues revival that has lasted more than a decade.
His 1986 release "Strong Pesuader" on Mercury remains my favorite,
but check out the earlier "Bad Influence" on Hightone, and "Showdown
(with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland) on Alligator.

Soul and Blues vocalist Dietra Farr was born on this day in 1957 in
Chicago. Dietra began her career in the clubs of Chicago and sang on
Dave Spector`s 1991 release "Bluebird Blues". Her career shifted into
higher gear when she joined the Chicago Blues band Mississippi Heat,
apearing on 2 CDs, "Learned The Hard Way" and "Thunder In My Heart".
Her debut solo CD is on JSP Records, "The Search Is Over".
     ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Guitarist Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead was born on this day in
     1942 in San Francisco, CA.
     ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

St. Louis Blues pianist Piano Slim was born today in 1928 in La
     Grange, TX.
Check out the highly rated "That`s Fat! His Best" on the
Collectables label, and "Sneaky People" on Swingmaster.
     ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

On this day in 1942, The American Federation of Musicians went on
     strike.
According to union president James C. Petrillo, phonograph
records were "a threat to members jobs." Musicians refused to perform
in recording sessions, but they were allowed to perform live. The ban
lasted for more than two years. It ended when the major labels agreed
to pay the union a royalty for all records released.
     ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

On this day in 1960, Aretha Franklin made her very first non-Gospel
recordings in New York City, including "Today I Sing the Blues."

On this 29th day of July in 1916 the influential jazz guitarist
Charlie Christian was born in Dallas, TX.
In his short life, Charlie Christian made as much of an impact on
music as any other guitarist. Although he was primarily known as a
swing-jazz guitarist, his influence went far beyond that genre. He
was among the first to utilize an electric guitar.
Charlie was a student of guitarist Eddie Durham, inventor of the
amplified guitar. Christian was also among the pioneers who first used
single-note leads in solos. (The un-amplified guitar was primarily
used as a rhythm instrument in band settings.) Christian was
influenced by Blues guitarists Lonnie Johnson and Scrapper Blackwell,
and in turn influenced many Blues guitarists, especially T-Bone
     Walker and BB King.
Christian was discovered by producer John Hammond, who
brought the young, innovative guitarist to Benny Goodman. He spent 3
years with Goodman, establishing himself as the premier swing
guitarist. Tragically, Christin contracted TB in 1941 and died in
1942 at age 25. His infuence lives on today. Guitar fans unfamiliar
with Christian`s work should check out "Solo Flight" on Vintage Jazz
or "The Immortal Charlie Christian" on Columbia / Legacy.
     ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Guitarist Mickey Bernard of The Ink Spots was born on this day in 1909
in Indianapolis, IN. The Ink Spots were a pioneering Black vocal group
that enjoyed tremedous success in the late 40s and early fifties, and
paved the way for the doo-wop explosion of the fifties.
     ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Cajun fiddler Canray Fontenot died on this day in 1995 in Welsh, LA at
     age 72.
Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records calls Fontenot "the last
of the great Cajun and Creole fiddlers". Known for his primitive
style, Fontenot liked to play onstage stomping his bare feet to keep
     the rhythm.
Many of his original songs have become Cajun standards. Fontenot
combined his musical career with sharecropping and working in a
hardware store, putting four of his six children through college and
     one daughter through law school.
Late in his career, Fontenot recorded with Beausoleil, the premier
keepers of the Cajun tradition, and with Michael Doucet, Beasoleil`s
     leader.
Check out "Louisiana Hot Sauce; Creole Style" on Arhoolie.

On this day in 1967, Pete Welding recorded a session with Honeyboy
Edwards in Chicago which didn't see release until 30 years later
     (1997) on Testament TCD 6002.

[Bluesville] Today In Blues - July 28 - Revised

As mentioned, what was originally posted as *Today In Blues - July 27*
is actually *Today In Blues - July 28* - so, let's get to it -
________________

Today In Blues - July 28

* Guitarist Mike Bloomfield was born in Chicago on this in 1943.

Michael got his first guitar for his 13th birthday. By the time he was
14 he was hanging out on Chicago`s Maxwell Street and in South Side
clubs, absorbing the Blues. He was soon sitting in with many of
Chicago`s finest Bluesmen. He formed a band with Charlie Musselwhite,
but their recordings for CBS were never released. He joined up with
The Paul Butterfield Band and the rest is history.

The Butterfield Band became the 1st integrated Chicago Blues band and
brought real Chicago Blues to a young white audience that had
previously been exposed to only British Blues. Their debut album was
the first Blues album to achieve sales of a million copies. Bloomfield
later played on Bob Dylan`s "Highway 61 Re-visited" and on the
landmark LP "Super Session" with Al Kooper. He then formed The
Electric Flag and established himself as the first white Blues guitar
super-star.

He dropped from the scene in the 70s, lending his talents to other
people`s projects, recording a few good Blues albums on small labels,
but remained out of the spotlight. Bloomfield was found dead of a drug
overdose in the backseat of his 1965 Chevy in 1981.

* Guitarist and folklorist Guy Carawan was born on this day in
1927 in L.A. CA

* North Mississippi Blues legend Junior Kimbrough was born on this
day.

Kimbrough was a regional sensation for many years before he was
discovered by Robert Pamer and featured in his documentary "Deep
Blues". This led to a record deal with Fat Possum Records and Junior
released a long overdue album in 1992 "All Night Long", which was
acclaimed in both Blues and mainstream publications.

He followed with '93`s "Sad days, Lonely Nights" and '97s "Most Things
Haven`t Worked Out". He died of a heart attack shortly after recording
"God Knows I Tried". Kimbrough was also owner of a popular juke joint,
where he and his friend RL Burnside often played.

Their music was a huge influence on Slide guitarist Luther Dickerson
of The North Mississippi All-Stars, and the All-Stars debut CD "Shake
Hands With Shorty" reflect that influence with songs written by Junior
and Burnside, as well as another Northern Mississippi slide great,
Mississippi Fred McDowell, peppered throughout the album.

* Guitarist and banjo player Ikey Robinson was born on this day in
1904 in Dublin, VA.

Robinson was primarily known as a banjo player, and was a well known
jazz and Blues musician. He recorded with Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence
Williams and Jabbo Smith, as well as fronting his own combos. Ikey was
're-discovered' in the seventies and re-united with Jabbo Smith. Check
out "Banjo Ikey Robinson" on RST Records.

* Modern slide guitarist Roy Rogers was born on this day in 1950
in Redding, CA.

Rogers is a North California-based guitarist who honed his chops in
the San Francisco Bay area. He formed The Delta Rhythm Kings in 1980.
In 1982 Rogers joined John Lee Hooker`s ´Coast To Coast Band" and he
remained with Hooker untill 1986 when he released "Chops not Chaps" on
Blind Pig Records. The album was successful and garnered a WC Handy
nomination.

Rogers has a number of CDs on Blind Pig and Point Blank and
occasionally teams up with harmonica player Norton Buffalo. Rogers
produced John Lee Hooker`s Grammy winning album "The Healer" in 1980
and also produced Hooker`s "Mr. Lucky", which also won a Grammy.

* Southern Soul and Blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Eddie
Hinton died on this day in 1995 in Birmingham, AL at age 51.

Eddie Hinton is one of the great unheralded Southern Soul and Blues
musicians. He was a member of the famous Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm
Section, which was, like Booker T and The MGs in the Stax studio in
Memphis, a hit factory for Atlantic Records. Hinton`s guitar can be
heard on hits by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Joe Tex, Solomon
Burke, Percy Sledge, the Staple Singers, The Dells, Johnnie Taylor,
Elvis Presley, Boz Scaggs, the Looking Glass and Otis Redding. Hinton
can also be heard on Duane Allman`s Anthology.

Hinton was a talented singer and songwriter as well as being a stellar
guitarist. He released a critically acclaimed album in 1978, "Very
Extremely Dangerous", on Capricorn, but the company went under shortly
after it`s release. In the '80s, a series of personal problems led to
hard times. Hinton was on the comeback trail and finally getting the
recognition he deserved when he died of a heart attack at age 51 in
1995. Check out "Very Blue Highway" on Bullseye Blues, "Very Extremely
Dangerous" and especially "Hard Luck Guy" on the revived Capricorn label.

* On this day in 1936, a 19-year-old Nat Cole recorded "Honey
Hush" with brother Eddie Cole's Solid Swingers for the Decca label. It
was his first recording.

* On this day in 1958, Billboard reported on a claim from the Esso
Research Center "...tuning in rock & roll music on a car radio can
cost a motorist money," because the rhythm can cause a driver to
unconsciously jiggle the gas pedal, thus wasting fuel.

Matched Number Eric Clapton 2008 Tour Poster Set Charity Auction!
Proceeds Benefit Crossroads Antigua
News entry published on 28 July 2008 / Last modified on 28 July 2008

A new EC Summer Tour / Hyde Park matched print auction is currently
underway on eBay. The auction ends 1 August at 09:34:54 PDT.

A unique opportunity currently exists for Eric Clapton fans, concert
poster collectors and rock memorabilia enthusiasts to own an
extraordinary item: a "matched number" set of limited edition art
prints that commemorate both Eric Clapton's Summer Tour and his 28
June concert in London's Hyde Park. One hundred percent of the
proceeds from the auction benefit Crossroads Antigua, an
international, non-profit facility for recovery from alcohol and drug
dependence founded by Eric Clapton.

In this special fundraising event, Eric Clapton Sales is currently
auctioning a set of "number matched" hand-pulled prints from the
"Summer Tour" and "Hyde Park" series by Firehouse Kustom Rockart. Only
a few matched sets exist and all will be auctioned by Eric Clapton
Sales on eBay to benefit Crossroads Antigua. Matched print numbers
enhance collectibility. The current matched set auction features print
number 30 / 1000 (Summer Tour) and print number 30 / 500 (Hyde Park
Concert). Bidding for the matched set ends on 1 August at 09:34:54 PDT.

These auctions will continue until all of the matched sets are gone.
These matched print sets will not be available elsewhere! (Unless, of
course, they become available at a later date on the secondary
collectible market).

Each print in each limited edition measures 20" x 20". These are not
mere concert posters, but works of art.

To commemorate the 2008 Eric Clapton Summer Tour, a limited edition
series of 1000 prints from Firehouse Kustom Rockart Company were
created. Firehouse Artists Chuck Sperry and Ron Donovan chose to use
Eric Clapton's most famous guitar, the Fender Stratocaster "Blackie"
as the predominant theme, with elements of his Gibson ES-335 to create
the dramatic image. The 1000 posters in the edition are hand-numbered
and signed by the artists.

To celebrate Eric Clapton's 28 June concert in London's Hyde Park,
Firehouse Kustom Rockart created an extra special companion print.
Limited to just 500 prints all made entirely by hand, its design
complements that of the Summer Tour Limited Edition Poster. The Hyde
Park Print shows a detail of Eric's cherry red Gibson ES-335, which he
purchased in 1964. The print design draws from the guitar's headstock
with the Hare Krishna stamp placed there by George Harrison. Design
elements inspired by Eric's "Blackie" are also included to complete
the theme. Each poster in this smaller series is also numbered and
signed by the artists, Chuck Sperry and Ron Donovan.

All limited edition prints from Firehouse Kustom Rockart are crafted
individually on rich papers using traditional hand printed silk screen
techniques. Sperry's and Donovan's work is easily recognizable by
their unique style of color theory, characterized by the use of
metallics over striking colors. The metallic inks and extraordinary
colour palette used by the artists is never done justice in photographs.

Previously, Firehouse Kustom Rockart has created several limited
edition prints for Eric Clapton:
- Madison Square Garden Concerts 2006
- 2007 Australia Tour
- 2007 U.S. Tour
- Second Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007
All of these editions have become highly sought after by fans of Eric
Clapton as well as poster collectors and rock memorabilia enthusiasts.

of work that is an eye-popping collection of the rock and roll posters
and ephemera. Their rock poster art can also be seen in a beautifully
illustrated 96 page book published by Last Gasp of San Francisco -

Guitarist Mike Bloomfield was born in Chicago on this in 1943. Michael
got his first guitar for his 13th birthday. By the time he was 14 he
was
hanging out on Chicago`s Maxwell Street and in South Side clubs,
absorbing the Blues. He was soon sitting in with many of Chicago`s
finest Bluesmen. He formed a band with Charlie Musselwhite, but their
recordings for CBS were never released.
He joined up with The Paul Butterfield Band and the
rest is history. The
Butterfield Band became the 1st integrated Chicago Blues band and
brought real Chicago Blues to a young white audience that had
previously
been exposed to only British Blues. Their debut album was the first
Blues album to achieve sales of a million copies. Bloomfield later
played on Bob Dylan`s "Highway 61 Re-visited" and on the landmark LP
"Super Session" with Al Kooper. He then formed The Electric Flag and
established himself as the first white Blues guitar super-star. He
dropped from the scene in the 70s, lending his talents to other
people`s
projects, recording a few good Blues albums on small labels, but
remained out of the spotlight. Bloomfield was found dead of a drug
overdose in the backseat of his 1965 Chevy in 1981.

Guitarist and folklorist Guy Carawan was born on this day in 1927 in

North Mississippi Blues legend Junior Kimbrough was born on this day
Kimbrough was a regional sensation for many years before he was

Blues".

a
long overdue album in 1992 "All Night Long", which was acclaimed in
both
Blues and mainstream publications. He followed with 93`s "Sad days,
Lonely Nights" and 97s "Most Things Haven`t Worked Out". He died of a
heart attack shortly after recording "God Knows I Tried". Kimbrough
was
also owner of a popular juke joint, where he and his friend RL
Burnside
often played. Their music was a huge influence on Slide guitarist
Luther
Dickerson of The North Mississippi All-Stars, and the All-Stars debut
CD
"Shake Hands With Shorty" reflect that influence with songs written by
Junior and Burnside, as well as another Northern Mississippi slide
great, Mississippi Fred McDowell, peppered throughout the album.
