Subject: [clapton] Chris Layton inducts Billy Cox into Musician's Hall of Fame

Greetings Everyone,
Longtime readers of this group might remember that in 1986 I introduced Jimi
Hendrix' bass player Billy Cox to Stevie Ray, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon who
had a memorable jam at Nashville's
Opry House on a couple of Hendrix tunes ( Billy played Tommys bass, the same
bass that Jimi had played in a jam with Johnny Winter). It was only fitting that
Chris came into town on Monday October 12th to help induct Billy into the
Musician's Hall of Fame in ceremonies at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. After
introducing Billy to the audience Chris joined Billy and guitarist Kenny Olsen
on a runthrough
of Voodoo Child ( Slight Return). Billy then accepted his award from Chris and
made a short but heartfelt thank you speech. To see the video
of Billy's speech and Chris giving him the award go to my website and
click on "Billy Cox" and scroll down.

To see the photos from the show in 1986 with Stevie just click on
"RocknRoll Heroes" and then the "Stevie Ray Vaughan" link.
ENJOY!
David

Hi all,
I'm a guitar player from Birmingham UK who has just released my second
instrumental guitar solo album - Green Room. I have many musical
influences - one of them being Eric Clapton. My album features 9 tracks
of varied instrumentals played on both electric and acoustic guitars. My
music has so far appealed to a wide range of audience, young and old -
each track drawing on a different vibe using elements of rock, blues and
classical influences. You can listen to samples and purchase the album
here <http://www.phillewisguitar.com/GreenRoom.htm> for just £7.99
(Inc. postage)
I hope you enjoy

Greetings All,
Bassist Billy Cox, the only surviving member of Jimi Hendrix' bands will be
inducted into the Musician's Hall of Fame in the 3rd annual ceremonies October
12 at Nashville's Symphony Center. He will perform a medley of Hendrix tunes
with Chicago guitarist, Stan Skibby. Other inductees performing will be Toto,
(King of the Surf Guitar) Dick Dale, a posthumous tribute to Chet Atkins played
by Steve Wariner and Charlie Daniels.
Among the presenters will be Rascal Flatts, Beach Boy Al Jardine, and Lenny
Kravitz. These ceremonies the past 3 years have proven to be the musical events
of the year. Brief film and photo tributes are screened
before each artist accepts his award and then performs with the stellar
musicians who gather for the event. You can get details at the Hall of
Fame's website at http://www.musicianshalloffame.com/

I recently visited Billy at his Nashville home. He is looking forward to the
induction ceremony and took time to show me his pride and joy,
a new 3 wheeled Harley Davidson motorcycle. You can see a couple of photos I
took of Billy and the bike at my website. Click on the
"Billy Cox" tab then scroll to the "Billy Cox photos" tab and scroll down.
In the first shot I am giving him a copy of the 9-3-70 Copenhagen CD.

ENJOY!

I have two extra tickets for Clapton/Winwood for June 26th at the Glendale
Arena. The couple I bought them for cannot go.

They are Section 121 (lower level, mid way) Row L, seats 11,12, and I am asking
face value for them. Please contact me if you or anyone who hasn't seen these
two legends perform, or just want to see them again.

Cannot wait to see this show, should hear some things we haven't heard in a long
time.

I've ever thought the most heartfelt album EC has done is "From The Cradle" as
he'd been really looking forward to this project for many years. I'd start with
"Someday After A While" cuz it's really got the Blues.

I assume that it has to be a clapton song.

I have 2 in mind "Motherless Child" (not children),,, the accustic song he
opened the Nothing but the Blues Tour with. Or "Tell the Truth", but the single
version that I only have on the double LP The History of Eric Clapton... that
I'm not sure ever made it to a CD version. The single version is different than
the other 2 recorded versions of Tell THe Truth, and it has almost no singing
and is peformed at a lighting fast pace. To me this would be an ideal song to
jump start the program.

Greetings All,
It was with great sadness that I woke up this morning to the
newspaper story that singer/singwriter/music legend Delaney Bramlett
died Saturday morning from complications of gallbladder surgery. He
was 69.
The list of music luminaries that he worked played and recorded with
is long. He wrote "Let It Rain" for Eric Clapton and produced Eric's
first solo album in 1970. He taught George Harrison how to play
slide guitar (he told me that himself) and even took George on tour
with the Delaney & Bonnie and Friends group for which George thanked
him by giving him the one of a kind Fender Telecaster that George is
seen playing in the rooftop concert at the end of the "Let It Be"
movie.
I met Delaney in 2002 in Nashville when he came to town to sing
backup (along with ex-wife Bonnie) at daughter Bekka's CD release
party at a small club in Nashville.(the first time the two had
performed together in 25 years).
I went down that afternoon hoping to catch them rehearsing and
entered a propped open side door and there he was.I introduced
myself and gave him a couple of photos from the day Jimi Hendrix sat
in with Delaney's band 1969 at a gig in Los Angeles. Delaney was
visibly moved. He held the color photo to his chest and said, "This
is just a joy." He thanked me and he and Bonnie signed my copies and
I gave them both copies. He even gave me his email address and phone
number (how cool is THAT?) and we talked a couple of times on the
phone. He sent me a copy of his unreleased new CD (he had no record
deal at the time) and I hooked him up with the people at XM Satellite
Radio and they interviewed himon the air and put his new music into
rotation on the Blues and Classic Rock channels.
He talked of coming back to Nashville to visit and coming by my home
to teach my son (a young musician) the rudiments of slide guitar).
To see the photos he and Bonnie signed for me go to my website and
click on the "Autographs" link and scroll down. There is also the
link to his website in the links section.

Today In Blues - Dec 17

On this 17th day of December in 1939 New Orleans Blues pianist James
Booker was born The Crescent City.
Booker was a flamboyant and eccentric pianist with an amazing left
hand technique that influenced many other New Orleans pianists.
     ------------ --------- ----

Influential Blues harmonica player Paul Butterfield was born in
Chicago on this day in 1942.
Butterfield was a trained classical flautist when he took up guitar
and began listening to Blues. He met guitarist Elvin Bishop and they
began playing parties as an acoustic duo and hanging out at the Black
Blues clubs on the South Side of Chicago, where they were befriended
by the likes of Muddy Waters , Howlin Wolf, Junior Wells, Little
Walter and Otis Rush. Bishop says "Butter" learned to play harp in 6
months , "a natural genius". They recruited bassist Jerome Arnold and
drummer Sam Lay from Howlin` Wolf`s band and formed The Paul

On this 14th day of December in 1899 harmonica player Deford Bailey
     was born in Bellwood, TN.
Bailey was the first (and only, until Charlie Pride many years
later) Black member of The Grand Ol` Opry. Bailey`s early recordings
were the first decent recordings of harmonica and were a huge
influence on many young Southern boys to play the harmonica,
leading to a host of Blues harmonica players emerging in the late 20s
and early 30s. Bailey appeared on 49 of the first 52 shows on The
Grand Ol` Opry, and his "Train Sound" was featured in the shows
introduction. Baily was finally enshrined in The Country Music Hall
of Fame in 2005 after years of being snubbed, despite his
     contributions.
     ------------ --------- -----

Motown vocalist Ronnie McNair was born today in 1949 in Camden, AL.
     ------------ --------- -----

Lester Melrose, producer and owner of Bluebird Records, was born on
this day in 1891 in Olney, IL.
Melrose gave rise to modern Chicago Blues in the 30s. His Bluebird
label, formed to supply juke boxes in Black clubs throughout the
country recorded nearly all of the best Chicago Blues artists, as
well as artists from St. Louis ad the South in the pre war era. John
Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, one of the most popular Blues artists of
that era, along with Big Bill Broonzy, Tampa Red, Henry Townsend,
Walter Davis, Big Joe Williams, Jazz Gillum, and many more were in
Bluebird`s stable. After the war, it seemed Melrose couldn`t catch on
to the electric rumblings coming from Chicago clubs, and he lost his
grip on Chicago blues, overpowered by The Chess brothers. He faded
from the business by the early 50s.
     ------------ --------- -

Jazz pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. was born in Whiteville, TN on this
     day in 1931.
Newborn was known as a Be-Bop stylist but began his career in R&B
and played with BB King in the early 50s.

Jimmy Williams, guitarist for The Bluzblasters, was born today in 1962
     in South Carolina.

Jazz and Blues alto saxaphonist Leo Wright was born on this day in
     1933 in Wichata, KS.
Wright played with Jimmy Witherspoon, Jimmie Smith, Kenny Burrell
     and Dizzy Gilespie, among others.

Gospel Vocalist Josephine Birdsong died on this day in 1981 in L.A. CA
     at age 59.
     ------------ --------- ----

New Orleans vocalist Curley Moore, who sang with Jump Blues pianist
Huey Smith, died on this day in 1985 in New Orleans at age 51.
     ------------ --------- ------

Blues, R&B and Jazz vocalist Dinah Washington (Ruth Jones) died on
this day in 1963 in Detroit at age 39.
Washington was one of the most versatile and gifted vocalists in
American popular music history. She started out playing piano and
directing her church choir, but didn`t believe in mixing the secular
with the spiritual, and unfortunately never recorded in the Gospel
genre. She covered a lot of other ground, however. She began her
secular career with Lionell Hampton from 1943 to `46, and dominated
the R&B charts in the 40s and 50s. She crossed over easily from Jazz
to Blues to Pop, and was an incalculable influence on most female R&B
singers that followed her. Virtually all her recordings are in print
on CD, including a massive reissue series of her Mercury and Emarcy
     recordings.

Saxaphonist, keyboardist, songwriter and producer Booker T Jones of
Booker T and The MGs was born today in 1944 in Memphis, TN.
Jones was one of the creators of The "Memphis Sound" and is featured
on countless Soul and Blues hits from Stax Records, including Sam and
Dave`s "Soul Man", "Hold on, I`m Comin", and hits by Otis Redding,
Wilson Pickett, Rufus and Carla Thomas, and Albert King, among
others. He co-wrote the Blues classic "Born Under a Bad Sign". His

     this day in 1961.
     ------------ --------- -------

Blues vocalist, drummer and harmonica player Big Mama Thornton was
born on this day in 1926 in Montgomery, AL.
Thornton is best known for being the originater of the Elvis
hit "Hound Dog" and her song "Ball and Chain" whose overwrought but
well intentioned cover by Janis Joplin helped Thornton`s career
     immensely in the 60s.
Thornton was an accomplished harp player, almost unheard of for a
female in those days. She was a tough cookie who dressed like a man
and took no gruff from anyone. Years of drug abuse took its toll, and
her once ample frame dwindled to downright scrawny in her later years.
She was found dead in a low-rent rooming house in L.A. in 1984.

Recordings" on MCA, and The Complete Vanguard Years" on Vanguard.

     this day in 1957.
     ------------ --------- ------

Chicago Guitarist Andrew Brown died on this day in 1985 in Harvey, IL
     at age 48.
Brown moved from Mississippi to Chicago in 1946 at age nine and was
tutored on guitar by Earl Hooker. By the early 50s he was playing
professionally. He was woefully underecorded, releasing a few
singles in the sixties, until Alligator released 3 of his songs on
its` anthology series "Living Chicago Blues" in 1980. Dick Shurman
produced 1982`s Handy Award winning album "Big Brown`s Chicago Blues"
on Black Magic records, and "On The Case" for Double Trouble in 1985.
Brown was already suffering from lung cancer by then, and he died
     shortly after its release.

Soul, R&B and Gospel guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and producer Sam
Cooke died on this day in Los Angeles, CA in 1964 at age 33.

Derek Trucks Band: New CD "Already Free" Due 13 January
News entry published on 28 November 2008 / Last modified on 29
November 2008

The Derek Trucks Band highly anticipated sixth studio album, "Already
Free", hits store shelves on 13 January.

Self-produced by Trucks in his home studio in Florida, it represents
the band's natural evolution as they move forward integrating
influences that span a variety of musical genres. Known for their
blues roots, the group takes this album well beyond blues to
incorporate the largers sounds of rock and soul.

Trucks said that, "this album was completely organic. We had no
expectations. We just came down and started writing. Then one thing
led to the next. I had all this time off so I just started calling up
friends. And once the process started rolling and once we realized
that we were onto something, we were writing tunes and all the sounds
we were getting were amazing and it was starting to feel great. It
felt like something was happening and we wanted to keep throwing
musicians on the fire."

The band consists of Derek Turcks on guitar, Todd Smallie on bass,
percussionist Count M'Buto, Yonrico Scott on drums, Kofi Burbridge on
keyboards and vocalist Mike Mattison. The band was joined by pals like
Doyle Bramhall II, Oteil Burbridge and Trucks' wife, Susan Tedeschi in
the studio. Bramhall takes over vocal duties on two songs, "Maybe This
Time" and "Our Love."

The first single from the album - a cover of "Down In The Flood" from
Bob Dylan and The Band's "The Basement Tapes" was released 4 November.
It has almost more relevance now post-Hurricane Katrina than when it
was written in 1967. "I think it really turned out to be one of the
most powerful tracks on the record. I think lyrically it's pretty
timely. Crash on the levee, down in the flood, are so significant
post-Katrina. There are some good metaphors, as there are in most
Dylan tunes," says Trucks.

"Already Free" reflects all of Trucks' many influences and
experiences, and highlights the quintessential Derek Trucks Band sound
of mixing soulful vocals and expert guitar playing on what is poised
to be the band's definitive album.

available. Start with "Hoodoo Man Blues" on Delmark, which is
a "desert island" CD to most Blues fans. Also check out "Blues Hits
Big Town", also on Delmark, and "Come On In This House" on Telarc.
Fans of Junior Wells will love "1957-1966" on Paula. Wells also had a
long partnership with guitarist Buddy Guy, and has many CDs available
with Guy.

Today In Blues - Dec 8

     © 2004 L.W. "Junior" Jackson

On this 8th day of December in 1947 Southern Rock vocalist and
keyboard player Gregg Allman was born in Nashville, TN.
     ------------ --------- -----

Blues saxaphonist Johnny Board was born on this day in 1919 in
     Chicago.
Johnny played with Lionel Hampton, Wes Montgomery, Fontella Bass,
Bobby "Blue" Bland, BB King, Johnny Ace, Teresa Brewer, Gatemouth
Brown, and Floyd Dixon, among many others.
     ------------ --------- -------

Blues and Boogie Woogie pianist and vocalist Cleo Brown was born on
this day in 1903 in Meridian, MS.
Known as a "Female Fats Waller", Cleo was a popular Blues
entertainer during the 30s and 40s. She got religion and
faded from the Blues scene, but re-emerged in the 80s.
     ------------ --------- ----

Piedmont Blues guitarist and pianist Henry "Rufe" Johnson was born on
this day in 1908 in Union, SC.
There is only one CD of Rufe in print, "The Union County Flash" on
     Trix Records.
     ------------ --------- -------

Rock singer Jim Morrison of The Doors was born on this day in 1943 in
     Melbourne, FL.
     ------------ --------- ---------

The great Hammond B-3 organ player Jimmy Smith was born on this day in
     1925 in Norristown, PA.
     ------------ --------- ---------

West Coast Blues guitarist Hollywood Fats (Michael Mann) died on this
day in 1986 in L.A. CA at age 32.
Hollywood Fats died before he was recognized for his undeniable
talent. Larry Taylor, with forty years experience as a top Blues
bassist and member of "The Hollywood Fats Band", calls Fats 'The
Greatest Blues guitarist". The only CD The Hollywood Fats Band has
out is on Black Top. There is a release of studio sessions, but Fats
can be heard on The James Harmon Band`s "Extra Napkins" and Mo'
Napkins" and on William Clarke`s "Hittin` Heavy", "Blues From LA"
and "Tip Of The Top". Hollywood Fats is also on Rod
     Piazza`s "Harpburn" and "Vintage Live:1975".
     ------------ --------- --

Chicago Blues harmonica legend Big Walter "Shakey" Horton died on this
day in 1981 in Chicago at age 63.
Arguably one of the best of the post-war Chicago harp players,
Shakey`s shy demeanor and unwillingness to be a bandleader caused him
to gain less recognition than his peers such as Little Walter and
Sonny Boy 2. Horton has recorded with some of the greats of Chicago
Blues, including Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Rush, Johnny Shines,
Tampa Red, and many others. His work on Jimmy Rogers` "Walkin` By
Myself" is considered by many to be the quintessential Chicago Blues
harp song. Willie Dixon called Horton "the best Blues harmonica
player I ever heard". If you don`t own any Big Walter, start
with "Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell" on Alligator, and "Fine
Cuts" on Blind Pig. If you are a Big Walter fan looking for more,
try "Memphis Recordings:1951" on Kent Records, or "Johnny Shines With
     Big Walter Horton" on Testament.
     ------------ --------- -------

New Orleans Jazz and pre-war Chicago Blues pianist Richard M. Jones
died on this day in 1945 in Chicago at age 53.
Jones was the composer of the Blues classic "Trouble In Mind". He
had an interesting career, beginning with a Jazz background in New
Orleans, and ending in Chicago with the Delta-gone-urban Blues sound
of 30s and 40s Chicago. His complete recorded works are available on
2 CDs ""1923-1927" and "1927-1944" on the Classics label.
     ------------ --------- --------

Jump Blues pianist and vocalist Julia Lee died on this day in 1958 in
Kansas City, MO at age 56.
Lee was a mainstay on the K.C Blues scene during the 40s and 50s.
She recorded frequently for Columbia from 1944-1950. Fans of Jump
Blues should check out "Julia Lee and Her Boyfriends" on JSP,
or "Kansas City Star" on Bear Family Records.
     ------------ --------- --------

Guitarist and songwriter John Lennon died on this day in 1980 in NYC,
     NY at age 40.
     ------------ --------- -------

Blues drummer Willie "Rough-Dried" Williams died on this day in 1988
     at age 66.
     ------------ --------- ------
