Mix Tape: 50 cent 2050

Say what you will about 50 Cent, he obviously does not care. Riding off the
success of one of the hottest selling rap albums ever, Get Rich or Die Tryin, 50
cent is coming back at us with a sophomore effort, The Massacre. To preclude
this second studio album, he released a mix tape, 50 Cent 2050. 50’s style has
not changed. His lingo and subject matter are basically the same. This mix tape
though is somewhat attractive, due to the anticipation of his next project and
due to some excellent production. There is also the fact that 50 got his start
on mix tapes, a tactic that worked well for him. Though not really much of a mix
(the guest list is small and mostly includes other G-Unit members), you get a
good feel for the direction of his next album.

Already in rotation on your local radio station is “Candy Shop”, the opening
track for the mix tape. Production wise, this snake charmer sounding track is
very seductive. New G-Unit member Olivia appears on the chorus. While the track
is very alluring, listening to 50 flow to this track is well—boring. 50 is
monotone and unbelievable on this track. In fact, listening to the little that
Olivia does on the chorus, you wish SHE was the one doing on the versus and 50
was either just doing the chorus or not on the track at all. Also, lyrically, 50
has been much, much better. Perhaps he should stick to his usual material and
leave the sexual word play to his new female member.

In the tradition of “Many Men” from 50s first CD, “My Downfall” is a
track dedicated to those who just wish 50 would go away. Taken from the track
“My Downfall” originally performed by Biggie, 50 is slightly more
introspective as he reflects over being shot and letting people know that he is
aware others are “praying” for his downfall. 50 is definitely more
convincing on this track, at one point saying “The flow’s CPR/I bring Biggie
back to life”. Listening to this, you can tell his heart is in it, as he is
probably inspired to be flowing over a track that was once graced by Biggie. 50
is at his lyrical best on this track at the end as he aggressively states
“Pussy niggas shouldn’t talk/keep my name out yo mouth/summer jam
understand/I’m the man/when I leave the crowd leave/show closing/game
over/ride or get rolled over”. People will have their opinions about this
track, but it will definitely get attention, which is more than likely, the main
point.

“Take Ya Back” is probably the track where 50 shines lyrically. Take the
chorus: “Coming up I was confused my mama kissing a girl/confused in a curse
coming up in a cold world/daddy ain’t around probably out committing
felonies/my favorite rapper used to say check-check out the melody”. What is
problematic with this track though is the fact that aside from the chorus, there
is only one verse and in the end it is repetitive. While tracks on mix tapes are
relatively shorter than regular songs, this side of 50 is rare and should have
been extended into a full song. This track gives hope that perhaps 50 will put a
meaningful song together for his upcoming album.
Final Grade
50 cent is just one of those artist. Either you really like him or you really
don’t. If you have not been a fan in the past, this mix tape will do nothing
to excite you about purchasing The Massacre. Though this CD contains most of the
elements that make a mix tape what it is, there are some irritating factors
going here. There is the DJ screaming in the background on EVERY SONG (normal
for a mix tape, but very annoying and overbearing) and there is the sound of
gunshots and loading guns on every track and between almost every track.
Bothersome attributes aside though, the production saves this mix tape, giving
it a Final Grade of C+
