Nfared Reviews: Trey Songz
I Gotta Make It
It would be hard to imagine that Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle would appear
on just anyone’s album, particularly their first album. With this said, it
seems as if new R&B artist Trey Songz has a promising career ahead of him. Even
putting these amazing guest appearances to the side and letting the music speak
for itself, his first single, Gotta Make It is radio’s new best friend. Trey
seems to have an appreciation for music that is rare, particularly for a twenty
year old. Apparently for Trey, when it comes to musical inclination, age ain’t
nothing but a number.
When there are no words to describe it, just say “OOO”. The smooth, somewhat
old school mid tempo track captures several different feelings and puts them all
into one phrase. Though “OOO” is of course not technically a word, Trey
displays his creativity by putting this issue to the side to make a very
expressive song. The nostalgia created by the chorus adds a playful element to
the song as Trey croons, “Cause when it hit you like ooo/like you got your
first freak/back seat of the jeep on the late night creep/like ooo/first time in
the club when you getting some love/shawty backing it up like ooo…” Though
the subject matter here is not anything new, the construction of the lyrics make
the song memorable. Trey’s tenor is surprisingly rich and fluid here,
completing the track in a sense. More than just a title, “OOO” is a reminder
that sometimes, regular English does not do the trick.
While infidelity is not considered acceptable, something has to be said about
the person willing to give a warning. With “Cheat On You”, Trey does several
things. He makes his feelings and intentions audible in the honest chorus,
“Things you do/to make me wanna cheat on you/all I go through/make me wanna
cheat on you/when you act a fool/I just wanna cheat on you/and I know it ain’t
cool/but I’m gonna cheat on you”. Also, Trey says something not necessarily
heard. He says he is going to cheat, meaning in a sense, he does not necessarily
want out of the relationship, yet he is frustrated enough to take any means to
make it work. While throughout the song he does say, “…make me wanna leave
yo ass”, this does not necessitate that a total departure is what he wants,
thus use of the term cheat. Along with its truthfulness, this song encourages
thinking, which is sadly an activity the music industry seems to frown on.
Final Grade
Trey Songz has several factors working in his favor. Usher is going through
overexposure at the moment. Bobby Valentino’s singles seem to sound alike, too
much alike. Trey has a prime opportunity to make a name for himself and so far,
he is doing just that. His distinctive voice and like-it-or not honesty
(consider another song title, Just Wanna Cut), make him instantly noticeable.
Time for something new. Time for Trey Songz. Final Grade A+
