Rihanna: A Girl Like Me The Second Time Around An Album Review by Nfared
With her first album, “Music From The Sun”, Rihanna proved that a pretty face
in music could actually have talent and substance. Though her first album was
not a breakthrough by any means, it did its job of setting her apart. Her
distinctive combination of island soul and R&B develops even further with her
second album, “A Girl Like Me”. Choosing not to deviate from her style she picks
up here where her first album left off.

Rock & Roll meets soul with the attractive “Kisses Don’t Lie”. The track is
forceful with strong drums and an intriguing guitar. Rihanna is just as adamant
with her singing, beginning, “Emotions come and go/who knows how the wind will
blow/there’s so little in this world to trust in.” She sings with the conviction
of someone far beyond her years in the telling chorus, “Cause when you kiss me/I
feel everything that I been missing/I try to slow down but my heart won’t
listen/and it’s tearing me all up inside…” She easily moves from grown up like
substance to the little girl within on the smooth “We Ride”. She documents
clearly the pain of discovering unfaithfulness in a relationship; “…I saw her
pictures and the letters she sent/you had me thinking you were out wit your
friends/I feel foolish…” She reminisces on better times at the beginning of the
second verse, “Visions in my mind/of the day that we met/you showed me things
that I’ll never forget”. Anyone at any age can be
hurt by love is the message as she says in the chorus, “I remember when you
used to say/when we ride we ride/it’s til the day that we die”. The inviting and
encouraging “Dem Haters” should find its way to radio even if it was not meant
to be a single. Rihanna speaks defiantly against those with bad intentions; “I’m
not concerned with people who prey/on the their wealth of their fellow man/cause
they only wanna know you and roll with you/only for things you have”. She is
instructional on the chorus, almost like a mother; “Keep dem haters out yo
circle/smiling in ya face but all they wanna do is bring you down…” Some grown
folks don’t even understand the importance of this message

Needle Meter Honestly, Rihanna is not an artist that will see record breaking
sales. This is probably because she is true to herself and her musical roots.
She bobs and weaves from lyrics that no one her age would seem to have gone
through, to songs that reveal her youthfulness. Her versatility gives her the
grounding she needs to be a good artist. The R&B market though has become so
cookie cutter that artist like Rihanna who truly have something to offer
sometimes get lost in the shuffle. Listening to her though, it’s obvious she
knows how to roll with the punches and keep it moving.
