Cherish: Unappreciated
“Southern R&B For Everyone” An Album Review by Nfared
Snap music is one of those things; it encourages feelings of strong affection
or feelings of strong distaste. Apparently most people are for the former, as it
has become a solid movement in music over the past few years. Riding on the
success of this movement, girl group Cherish is dropping their debut album,
“Unappreciated”. There hit first single “Do It Do It” is snap music shaking
hands with R&B. The girls are probably thankful for snap music as it has helped
them develop a name for themselves, but make no mistake though; the talent of
this group goes far beyond the phenomena of “Leaning with it and rocking with
it”.

The album’s second single, “Unappreciated”, shows that the group can do the
club songs as well as ballads. The chorus is potent, particularly when the
harmony kicks in on, “You don’t do the things you used to do/you don’t even say
I love you too…” The dichotomy is clear and cleverly expressed in the second
verse with, “What am I to do when my heart says leave/but my feet won’t move?”
An even more bothersome situation is presented with “Stop Callin Me”.
Frustration never sounded so beautiful with the harmonious line in the chorus,
“You be callin three and four times in a row/if you can’t reach me on my cell
you call my home/how many times to I have to let you know/to stop callin me.”
The bait and switch technique appears on “Ooh”. A date out turns into a date in
with a wallet left at home that has to be retrieved. It’s almost easy to
mentally picture the video for this ballad as the song progresses like a story,
from the “look at the watch”, to the “damn I left my wallet
at the house…” to the “lit candles”. The writing is flows invitingly throughout
the song. The eclectic bedroom track, “Show and Tell” is sensual and solid as
the girls urge, “So baby are you down/for a little show and tell?/Want you to
show me that you want it like you fresh outta jail…” Perhaps an anthem, “Fool
For You” is a “last straw” song. The vocal arrangements are a hit again as the
song starts with, “No more of these words/baby I’m sorry won’t you just come
back to me baby/I can’t deal with your lies/I didn’t cheat baby she just kissed
me.” The production brings the track full circle with a poignant piano
throughout. Cherish is nobody’s fool.

Needle Meter With all of the crunk and leaning coming out of the south as of
late, R&B artist have been taking something of a backseat. Enter Cherish. This
group brings a level of talent that can be appreciated on several levels. They
don’t overdo it, their album sounds like a group effort with plenty of harmony
and more than one person singing lead (hopefully DC3 is taking notes for their
sure to come reunion), and the songs keep interest lyrically. From all angles,
Cherish is a testament to true girl groups, and with this album, they have set a
high bar for those to come.
