AS I BEGIN... - RIGHT ANGLE COLUMN
by Jason Ewert
As I began preparing for this column, one question continually rose
before me: Why am I doing this? Man must have a reason for his
actions, and if he is going to undertake a weekly column he'd better
have a good reason for imposing himself on those who take time to
read and contemplate what he has to say.
All of a Christian's actions must follow Christ's Great Commission in
Matthew 28:18-20: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have
commanded you..." The first part of this commission is often quoted
as a rallying call to convince young people to dedicate their lives
to converting the heathen. While it is my prayer that God would use
my words to enlighten those walking in darkness, this is not my
primary aim. Rather, I wish to follow out the oft-neglected second
half of Christ's command, and help others discover the application of
God's Word to their lives.
J. Gresham Machen once said, "Christianity must pervade not merely
all nations, but also human thought." What Machen understood is that
converting people is only part of the step towards reformation and
revival. Unless Christians are taught how God's Word applies to all
of their lives, they cannot have any lasting influence on their
culture or on their fellow human beings. A man may have a God-given
talent for singing; however, unless he is properly trained in music,
it is unlikely that he will be able to bless others with his singing.
In the same way, we as Christians need to be trained how to think,
and it is my ambition to aid others in their training.
I make no claims to wisdom, and I am certainly susceptible to great
foolishness because of my youth. Yet, God has given me a gift of
writing, and I believe that it is best used in telling others what
God has been teaching me. That said, it is not my wish to write
theological discourses. Rather, my aim is to use real-life examples
to demonstrate what God has been teaching me. Whether I am using
ancient rulers, classic books, recent albums, or personal
illustrations to make my point, the point is to communicate my point
clearly and, at the same time, provide entertaining writing. Though I
cannot promise to succeed in this aspiration, these are my
intentions. If you notice anything that ought to be corrected in my
writing (content, style, etc.), please feel free to let me know:
constructive criticism is always helpful and greatly appreciated.
Finally, allow me to explain the name Right Angle. Suggested by
fellow writer Josh Shepherd, Right Angle expresses my desire to be
perfectly in line with Scripture. A right angle, as you know, is an
angle which is made by one line intersecting another perpendicularly.
In the same way, it is my prayer that my beliefs would be straight
from God's Word. As a fallen creature, I know that it is impossible
for me to be perfectly straight, but this is my aim, and may God show
me where I have grown crooked branches and help me repair the damage
done by these perversions. May He use my words to glorify Him and
encourage others.
Omnia Gloria Deo.
